Cumberland Falls Series Closure

We have officially closed the Cumberland Falls series and we want to express our sincere thanks for your participation in this journey with the beautiful daughter of Tapwrit.

We partnered with Starry Night Racing to acquire Cumberland Falls from the 2022 Fasig-Tipton Midlantic 2-year-old in training sale for a modest price of $65,000. Our bloodstock team thought she was beautifully balanced, which proved to be extremely beneficial as far as soundness went, allowing her to race 14 times in a 19-month time span under the MRH Stable. While she was a very consistent horse and did break her maiden at the special weight level, she seemed to fit best in the claiming class, which ultimately led to her being claimed.

We purchased Cumberland Falls as a value play, hoping she could secure a few wins, boost her residual value, and provide plenty of fun for her owners along the way. While her win percentage was modest and didn’t enhance her broodmare value, she consistently gave her best, offering plenty of excitement. With multiple valiant second-place finishes before changing hands, her last race was an exceptional effort. We deeply appreciate the experiences she brought to her owners and we wish her new owners well. As always we will continue to keep an eye on her and root for her throughout her career.

Incredible Breeze Report

Incredible continues to do well coming out of his race and he returned to the work tab this morning with a maintenance half-mile in :50.60 (13/27) at Horseshoe Indianapolis. One possible spot for his next race could be a one-mile MSW on the grass on Oct. 23.

Secret Crush Update

Secret Crush had his re-check and scan as planned this week, and he has been cleared to return to training. It’s important to note, however, that soft-tissue injuries like Secret Crush’s require a particularly measured and patient approach. The muscle fibers of the suspensory need to be strengthened before his workload can increase, so his timeline might look a bit different than it would for other types of injuries or just a standard return from a break.

The team at Silver Springs has had their best results with cases like Secret Crush when they jog the horse for approximately 60 days and then gallop them for another 60 days before doing any speed work. So, that will be the plan for Secret Crush. He’ll of course also get regular vet checks and re-scans to make sure everything is trending in the right direction.

We’ll continue to monitor his progress at Silver Springs and will pass along content and news as it comes.

Seize the Grey Update

Seize the Grey is back training at Churchill Downs and continues to thrive. Your Pennsylvania Derby winner was seen jogging early this morning (alongside his younger Lukas/MRH stablemate Caldera) and is scheduled to breeze at 5:30 a.m. tomorrow.

We also followed up with Parx regarding the payment of your share of the purse for the Pennsylvania Derby. They reported the lab results are run through HISA and The Pennsylvania Racing Commission and there is no consistent timeframe for their return. We will of course remain on the lookout for those funds and will report back once we receive them.

Here's the Kicker Update

Here’s the Kicker has resumed training off of her impressive 10 3/4-length win. There is a first-level allowance race going a mile on the dirt at Gulfstream Park on October 20th that we will be considering. She will likely have a work or two between now and then. It would be her first time stretching out, which as we've mentioned before is something trainer Saffie Joseph, Jr. is keen to try. We will keep you updated as to her progress in the coming weeks.

Secret Crush Update

Apologies for the delayed Secret Crush update--while we had originally expected Dr. Sutter to perform his re-check a couple of weeks ago, he conferred with the team at Silver Springs and they decided that he wait until this week, as that makes it a full five months of recovery time. We should hear more from Dr. Sutter later this week after he performs his examination and will pass along the news when we have it.

Madame Secretary Update
Madame Secretary was spotted galloping early this morning at Santa Anita Park. Your daughter of Constitution continues to train well and will likely return to the work tab in the next week or so.

Improbable Luck Breeze Report

Improbable Luck turned in a very speedy second breeze at Churchill Downs this morning, stopping the clock in a best-of-18 :34.4.

When we caught up with trainer D. Wayne Lukas yesterday, he did note that Improbable Luck was carrying a bit more weight than he would like him to at this stage, but sharp works like that will no doubt help melt the pounds away.

Authentic Spirit Update

As we mentioned when we initially sent Authentic Spirit to Machmer Hall, we were going to have a precautionary set of X-rays taken of his knees and ankles to make sure nothing needed to be taken care of while he was at the farm. Those were taken this week and there was one finding in his front left fetlock (ankle) of a P1 chip fragment. This chip is recommended to be surgically removed, which is a standard practice, and one of the most common surgeries for horses. Clinically, his ankle looks great and you would never know a chip was present, but this is why taking proactive X-rays is very important and useful. While at the moment it may seem like a disappointment, it does give us hope that there were multiple factors limiting his performance.

Your son of Authentic went in today for his chip removal with Dr. Rogerson. Dr. H**e (who took the initial set of X-rays) recommended a subsequent 90 days of time off, which lines up with our original thinking of starting him back up on January 1st, but we will wait for Dr. Rogerson’s post-op report to finalize the timeline.

Isle Blue Update

Isle Blue had follow-up X-rays taken as planned by Dr. Larry Bramlage to monitor her progress. She is not quite ready at this time to do anything further and as a result, will receive another month of turnout. Following another 30 days, we don’t expect there to be any additional delays and at that time she should be ready to begin jogging under tack.

Incredible Race Recap

Incredible showed significantly increased speed today, but ultimately faded to seventh.

He broke sharply, but a bit inward towards the open space to his inside (he had the rail draw due to a scratch of the #1). The grey doled out splits of :23.91 and :48.54 while seeming be traveling well within himself. Challenged midway on the turn for home, however, he couldn’t keep pace when they straightened and came up empty in the stretch.

It’s obviously still tough to fully judge Incredible’s two efforts—the first for the obvious reasons, and today due to the race coming off the grass and being contested over a track with some moisture in it. Jockey Erik Asmussen postulated that he may not have handled the surface.

If nothing else, we’d take it as a positive that Incredible showed so much more interest and speed early today.
We’ll see how he comes back—possibly give him a bit more time as he was wheeling back quick for this one—and go from there.

Madame Secretary Update

Madame Secretary has settled right in at Santa Anita since returning to the Mandella barn and is back in a gallop routine. Enjoy the video above of her on the training track this morning.

Here's the Kicker Cruises at GP

Congrats! Here’s the Kicker was the easiest of winners this afternoon at Gulfstream, earning her diploma by 10 3/4 lengths as the overwhelming favorite.

Your grey seemed to idle for a few strides coming out of the gate, but quickly moved up while three deep to lock on to the pacesetters in third. She always seemed to be going much better than her competition from there, and took over at the top of the lane before widening at will with good-looking strides.

Here’s the Kicker certainly looked on paper like she was sitting on a breakout win like that against this field, but it was exciting nonetheless to see her put it all together and pick up her diploma.

We should have plenty of fun with her going forward. We’ll let her bounce out of this one and discuss next targets with trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. in the coming weeks.

Seize the Grey Dominates PA Derby!

Congratulations! Seize the Grey showed what he’s made of this evening at Parx with a dominant performance in the $1-million G1 Pennsylvania Derby, triggering a $2-million kicker as part of his stud deal on top of everything else.

Your grey broke sharply, and was briefly challenged for the lead, but Jaime and Seize the Grey didn’t blink and managed to establish command down on the fence into the first turn. They posted a :23.89 opening quarter, and were able to slow it down nicely down the backside through a :49.25 half. Seize the Grey seemed to be inching clear of the competition entering the home bend, but the G1 Santa Anita Derby winner Stronghold was among those launching serious bids from the back of the pack.

Stronghold ranged up to challenge Seize the Grey at the top of the lane as favorite Dragoon Guard looked to sneak up the fence, but as soon as Seize the Grey saw Stronghold, he turned on the afterburners and kicked clear again with authority to open up several lengths.
This was obviously a pivotal race for Seize the Grey’s career, and he could not have answered the call any more emphatically. The G1 Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile is the next target we’ve had in mind for a while, and will likely remain the goal, but we’ll see how the c**t comes back and chat with Wayne in the coming days.
