Time for an update. I tried for some time to get 3 pairs of pigs to breed, but they never produced. I waited months, then would switch boars in case of an incompatibility issue. This went on for months. I faced the fact I may give up on cavies. Finally, my favorite boar, the TSW Mr. Bean, had to be put down due to a bladder stone. I realized my sows were aging out past the time of having a safe, first-time litter.
A few days later, I noticed Peggy Sue looked to be gaining weight; she had last been with Mr. Bean. She couldn't be pregnant -- he didn't feel well for quite a while, and she was nearing her 2nd birthday. I wondered if she had some other growth or problem that would require yet another trip to the vet.
The very next day when I went down to do my cavy chores, I was stunned to see Peggy in her cage with 3 babies, all apparently doing well! I called them the miracle litter, because their sire was passed, and their mother was a week or two short of her 2nd birthday!
After 6 days, we did lose the little TSW baby -- she just had failure to thrive. I tried supplementing her with puppy formula, but she just didn't make it. Her two sisters have done very well, though, and now at 4 months are nearly as big as their mother. Soon to be tagged, they will be Martina and Miranda.

About Us

We are a small caviary in Northern Illinois that raises American and Satin American cavies in the broken variety. We keep our numbers small because I only produce that which I need and can find a good home for; I come from a dog showing background, and responsible breeding/ownership is what I am all about. Please do your homework about these animals, their care, and make the commitment to their longevity before getting one or more. Make sure you can keep them safe from your other pets, and teach your children how to handle them safely. Animals are not toys; they are living, breathing creatures with feelings, emotions, and can feel pain. Please check out our website at http://www.willowcreekcavies.com . I try to keep that site updated as well with available animals, and also pages with information about care, food, and links to other sites about guinea pigs (cavies). If you have questions or wish to make an inquiry about a particular animal --- or wish to contact us for any reason, please email us at [email protected]

Regards,

Kathy
