For all the people who won’t support the McDonough County Animal Shelter because “it’s a kill shelter”…..This is for you!!!
Keep reading is you don’t believe it….
The definition of a no kill shelter is 90% of the animals in its care are placed. McDonough county meets that rate. Yes, some animals are rarely euthanized (36 last year, 10 this year) at the shelter— these are the dying and hopeless animals that any reasonable pet owner would bring to a vet for euthanasia. This happens at every shelter. And for the ones that say they euthanize zero, they are either selectively taking in only healthy animals, letting animals die on their own (which can be very inhumane in itself), or lying. (I have worked at shelters that do all of the above.)
Yes, years ago the shelter euthanized a lot. Times have changed, staff has changed. They have come a long way. So kudos to current staff… Zach, Anetta, and Tristan. Way to go!
(And because this is FB and people love to argue … please just scroll on. Don’t wreck their moment. Or, better yet, messenger me your phone number so we can call you next time there needs to be a euthanasia so you can see why it’s sometimes necessary for yourself.)
