UPDATE: Zinc is outta here!!!! He has a home!!!!! (I miss him already!).

This is Zinc! Zinc was not doing well at the shelter. He was happy and playful and would eat but he just couldn’t gain weight. So we kitten-napped and brought him to the All Pets fat farm. Zinc is now gaining like a champion and might be a bit plump. He’s neutered, dewormed, vaccinated and needs a home. If you want to visit come by the clinic but he will need to be adopted through the shelter.

We have been seeing several cases of kennel cough/tracheobronchitis/CIRDC (canine infections respiratory disease complex). For the most part these terms all mean the same thing. There are a ton of organisms that can cause this complex but it is typically a combination of a bacteria (bordetella) and a virus. Signs are typically a dry, hacking, “choking on chicken bones” sounding cough. It is typically worse at night or with activity. Most dogs are minimally ill other than the annoying cough. Several we have seen have been at the dog park. Feel free to give us a call if you have questions!

Learn the signs of canine infectious respiratory disease complex (CIRDC), or “kennel cough,” and how to protect your pet from this highly contagious illness affecting the respiratory tract in dogs.

WHERE IS ROCKY????

The original alpha dog Rocky from Rocky On Parade Round 1 is a bit under the weather. He’s 11! Which is quite old for a bulldog (fiberglass or otherwise). So, Dr. Blakeley decided to take him to her personal vet clinic (I.e. home) for some TLC. He is getting a complete check up (sanding to remove the flaky clear coat, chipped paint, etc) and surgery (bondo to repair several cracks and holes). Once he is recovered from that he’s going to get dewormed (with primer), vaccinated (with a fresh coat of paint), and neutered (because pet overpopulation is a HUGE problem).

Then the fun happens… Dr. Blakeley’s ultimate plan if she can pull it off is to make the new Rocky “signable.” For a small donation you can (hopefully) sign the name of your favorite pet on Rocky. Every penny will be donated to the humane society for their new building campaign. And then we plan to donate the dog to live at the new shelter.

So that’s what’s up with Rocky!

This is the rabies virus… and McDonough county HAS a confirmed case in a bat. The bat was caught by a 16 year old indoor/outdoor pet cat and who then promptly presented the bat to her family and potentially exposed the children in the household. The children are now receiving post exposure vaccines. Because we don’t commonly see rabies some have have gotten complacent. Some are annoyed they have to buy a rabies tag every year.
Rabies is real. There is no treatment once signs develop. If you have questions about rabies let us know!
