With a winter mix headed our way this Friday, it's crucial to ensure our furry friends are safe and comfortable during the extreme cold temperatures. 🐾🧣

Here are some tips to keep your pets cozy and healthy:
* Limit Outdoor Time: Keep outdoor activities short and sweet. Prolonged exposure to cold can be harmful to pets.
* Provide Warm Shelter: Ensure your pet has a warm and dry place to rest. If they stay outside, make sure they have insulated shelter from the wind and snow.
* Stay Hydrated: Cold weather can be dehydrating. Make sure your pet has access to fresh, unfrozen water at all times.

Today is all about ensuring our furry friends are safe and secure while traveling. Whether you're planning a road trip, a quick visit to the vet, or an adventurous getaway, here are some essential tips to keep your pets safe on the road:

🐾 Use a Pet Carrier or Harness: Always use a well-ventilated pet carrier or a harness that attaches to your car’s seatbelt. This prevents pets from roaming around the car and keeps them secure in case of sudden stops.

🐾 Never Leave Pets Alone in the Car: Even on mild days, temperatures inside a car can rise quickly, putting your pet at risk of heatstroke. Always bring your pet with you or ensure someone can stay with them.

🐾 Keep Heads and Paws Inside: While it might be tempting to let your pet stick their head out of the window, this can lead to injuries from debris or sudden stops. Keep windows closed or only slightly open for fresh air.

🐾 Frequent Breaks: Plan for regular stops to let your pet stretch, relieve themselves, and drink water. This keeps them comfortable and prevents restlessness.

I absolutely love schnauzers, all breeds...

GIANT congratulations to Monty for winning Best in Show win at the AKC National Championship! And while we are all so proud of Team Monty, we also recognize the impact that all this extra attention could have on our favorite breed. Fame is a double-edged sword as they say…

If you have fallen in love with Giants and are interested in the breed, here are just a few of the important things you need to know:

• They are not all “gentle giants”. They are large, working dogs and generally aren’t suited for first-time dog owners, living in apartments or living alone in the backyard, or working as service dogs.

• As puppies, they are very mouthy, have sharp little puppy teeth, and can be difficult to housebreak – all challenging for a new owner.

• They possess a challenging combination of stubbornness and cleverness. They can be taught to do almost anything, but they are not easily trained, especially by the novice owner.

• They are instinctively protective of whatever they perceive as theirs – people, home, vehicles, etc. This does not need to be taught or even encouraged. But instead, it needs to be managed through consistent training and appropriate socialization.

• They can be good with children, but they are large and can easily knock down toddlers. And their protective nature can become a liability when they decide to protect “their” child from the relative who visits infrequently or from the neighbor kids who are playing too rough.

• And they require frequent grooming. The Giant you see winning the dog show looks exquisite due to significant work, talent, and expertise.

• They require a lot of age-appropriate exercise but more importantly need mental stimulation and activities. Otherwise, they will find a way to entertain themselves that you won’t appreciate.

Please thoroughly research the breed and never buy one on impulse just because it’s available right away. Expect to wait months or more for the right dog. Spend time around a Giant before you get one, and don’t just admire them from afar. Ask other owners and breeders to meet their Giants and see how they really behave in their home environment. Understand the health issues that are prevalent in this breed. Know the commitment you will be making in both time and money before you get one. When you have questions, really listen to the recommendations and advice of responsible breeders and owners who have had Giants for decades – even if the answer isn’t what you hoped to hear.

A primary objective of the Giant Schnauzer Club of America is to preserve and protect the breed that we love so much. One way we do this is by providing accurate information. Please visit our website for more information including a list of over 50 breeders who are also GSCA members. Reach out to one in your area, and while they may not have a puppy available, they will be glad to teach you more about the breed. You will also find breed health information and a great set of questions to ask a breeder if you decide that a Giant is the right breed for you.
