American Kennel Club
Canine Good Citizen Evaluation
At Loose Leash Canine, we strive to provide both the dog and owners the tools necessary to train and maintain well-mannered dogs through educated responsible handlers. In 1989 the American Kennel Club (AKC) developed the Canine Good Citizen program (CGC). This program was developed to not only strengthen the bond between the dog and owner but also create a standardized exam to evaluate the team in scenarios that challenge the dog’s confidence during common public distractions. These tests are evaluated by an AKC registered proctor and given a pass or fail score.
The CGC certification program consists of the following ten scenarios:
Accepting the approach of a friendly stranger.
Sitting politely while being pet by a stranger.
The overall healthy and clean appearance of the dog as well as the ability to welcome being groomed or a hands on evaluation.
Having the ability to walk on a loose leash.
Able to return to the owner when called.
Sit and down on cue as well as staying in place away from the owner at a distance of at least 20 feet.
Coming when called.
The ability to remain calm when approached by another leashed dog.
The ability to remain calm during the presence of a loud or sudden distraction.
Must remain calm during a supervised separation of the dog and owner.
Successful teams are given an AKC CGC passing ribbon and the option to be sent a frameable CGC completion certificate. The dog is also registered through the American Kennel Club as being a successful Canine Good Citizen. The CGC title is a prerequisite for dogs and handlers that want to pursue a future therapy dog title. The title of AKC CGC is proof of the commitment of training between dog and handler.
This year we had five teams participate in the CGC program. I am very proud to say that all five teams passed with flying colors. Congratulations to:
Aimee and Sadie
Jay and Sabi
Debbie and Rugar
Lisa and Kane (advanced CGC)
Jaimie and Boone
I would also like to congratulate Steve and Annie who tested and passed last year.
If you are interested in participating in the CGC program, please give us a call.
