May is Allergy Awareness Month!

Dogs and Cats often experience allergies to pollen, grasses, dust, mold, or certain ingredients in foods just as humans do. Allergies in pets may present themselves as itchy and red skin and feet, recurring ear infections, or hair loss.

If you notice any of these symptoms in your pet, dont fret! We have tests we can do to determine the cause of your pets allergies, including a prescription diet trial, skin cytology, skin scrape, or a fungal culture.

With prescription medication and some changes in the environment, pets with allergies can live a long, happy, and healthy life.

Its Fun Fact Wednesday!

Did you know dog tail wags have multiple meanings? A vigorous tail wag to the right means happiness at seeing its owner, but slow wags of a tail held halfway down can mean fear or insecurity, or a tail held very high and wagged extremely fast can mean fear or aggression for some dogs.

Did you know that cats are lactose intolerant? While many people assume that cats love milk, the truth is that most cats are actually unable to digest lactose, which is the main sugar found in milk.

April is Prevent Lyme in Dogs Month.

Borreliosis (Lyme disease) is transmitted by the bite of infected deer ticks. April was chosen as dogs are at an increased risk in Spring and Summer.

The best way the prevent Lyme disease is keeping your dog on a vet prescribed flea/ tick prevention year round. Ticks do not die in winter and can become active when the weather is above 30 degrees. We recommend Nexgard, a beef flavored chew that is given once every 30 days.

Vaccinating against Lyme disease is recommended for pets that live in endemic areas or that travel to areas where Lyme disease is prevalent. This vaccine is initially given twice, at two to four-week intervals. Annual revaccination is necessary to maintain your dog’s immunity. The decision to vaccinate against Lyme disease can be based on your dog’s lifestyle and individual risk assessment.

For more infomation or to get your dog protected against lyme disease call us at (608) 242-2142 or email us at [email protected] today!

Its Fun Fact Wednesday!

Dogs can understand up to 250 words and gestures. The average dog is estimated to be as intelligent as a 2-year-old child.

Cats Only Meow For Humans. Cats meow to greet people, solicit attention, to ask for food, ask to be let in or out. It is a way of communicating with people. Interestingly cats do not meow to other cats or other animals, just at people.

It's Fun Fact Wednesday!

Cats have a whopping 32 muscles in each of their ears, allowing them to swivel their ears to hone in on the exact source of a noise. Cats can move both ears separately! Additionally, cats can rotate their ears to 180 degrees!

Dogs can hear nearly four times better than humans! Dogs also have much more sensitive hearing than humans, picking up ultra-quiet noises that their parents can’t hear.

Happy Valentines Day!

It's time to break out the flowers and candies and cozy up to those you love. Please remember to show some love to the furry ones in your life an keep them safe this holiday!

Keep all types of chocolate away from dogs. Chocolate is potentially life-threatening when ingested by pets.

Watch out for other candies too! Don’t let pets near treats sweetened with xylitol.

Keep harmful plants out of reach of your furry ones, plants like lillies, daffodils, and tulips are toxic to cats.

Keep a watchful eye on your glasses! Alcohol can be very harmful to our little ones, clean up any spilled wine and put your glasses out of reach.

Dont leave lit candles in room with your pet, an unattened flame can cause burns to your pets if they get to close!

With the fridged temperature, we here at Animart want to remind you all to keep your pets inside! Even breeds like Husky, Malamute, and Chow Chow's need heated, comfortable spaces in these temperatures.
