It’s National Dog Day! Show us your pups!

These are a couple of our older ladies in our pack. Mama Bea (~10 yrs, white pittie) and Flossy (~12 yrs, brown shih tzu) couldn’t be more different but somehow they found a way to be buddies, nonetheless. We can learn a lot from dogs.

We will be closed from August 15-18 so we can visit our friends at Community Animal Rescue & Adoption - CARA in Jackson MS and deliver all the wonderful donations we have received from you! In addition to what is in the photo, we have $325 cash in hand and over $150 raised on the fundraising link we shared.

We also received several items for three local dogs we help with. I know for sure their moms also appreciate you! We are so grateful for your support!

I can’t forget the kitty toys too! Those will be going to our friends locally at Cattyshack.

We will be posting some videos and photos of our visit to CARA so you can see some of the beautiful pups receiving these gifts.

Hello, friends!

You may or may not know that we got our start working with dogs through animal rescue and fostering back in 2014.

As you can imagine, over the last ten years we have met, worked with, lived with, and loved hundreds of dogs. When we left rescue last year, we stepped away from overseeing our own organization but our commitment to the dogs we met during that time is unwavering.

There are three special needs dogs we continue to help support through monthly donations and troubleshooting for their forever homes. Photos and Amazon wishlists of these dogs will be posted in the comments. If you would like to help with their needs, we and they would be so grateful.

Additionally, there is one rescue we had the privilege to work with who we try to help when we are able. Community Animal Rescue & Adoption - CARA is a group in Jackson MS who does things right. They work tirelessly with few resources for the animals in their community. Their director has become a good friend and mentor to us because of her dedication and compassion. We will be making a trip to CARA on August 15 and would love to shower them with enrichment goodies and necessities to lighten their load and support their efforts. We have created an Amazon wishlist for them (link in comments) or you can donate to them directly by clicking the donate button below. We highly encourage you to checkout their page for all the good work they do on a daily basis.

The dog in this photo, Sloan, lived at CARA from the time he was about a week old until he was over 10 years old when we pulled him into our rescue. He never knew he was homeless and never gave up hope because of the love he had there.

Thank you for reading to the end. We know it takes a village to keep dogs safe and in homes. Times are tough in the rescue world so every bit of help we can give helps ease the burden of those working so hard to save as many as they can.

We still have space for one family to stay with us over the upcoming holiday. Email us at [email protected] to snag the room for your pup.

Fireworks are scary for some dogs. We take extra precautions to ensure everyone is safely inside while the show is going on. We have sound machines to help drown out the noise and will be home to provide reassurance to extra anxious guests. We’re able to administer calming meds (provided by the owner) should that be needed as well. Our yard is double fenced and we closely supervise to help keep everyone safely confined should they need a quick potty break during the fireworks.

Do you currently or have you ever shared your life with a reactive dog? These stinkers push us to our very limits and too often break our hearts, but the experiences with them are priceless and teach us so much about ourselves and letting go.

Working with many reactive dogs over the last ten years has given us a wealth of knowledge and experience that we’re happy to share with you. We’re looking at starting a support group for humans who have been there or are in the thick of it now.

Let us know in the comments if this is something you would find helpful and days/times that work best. This group would be free of charge and for humans only.

Would anyone be interested in a six week group class that handles basic commands, troubleshooting tips, and enrichment ideas? Is there something else you would like a dog related class on? Let us know in the comments. We’re doing some brainstorming and would love your input!

Photo of our current board and train client Millie for attention. (By the way: This amazing pup is looking for a forever home once she finishes up her training with us. Contact Carmen Van Etten for more information on Millie.)

NOT EVERYTHING NEEDS TRAINING!

🦴 🍖 Did you know that sometimes things are simple.

DOG OWNER: "my dog growls when he has a bone and I try to take it from him."

ME: "Oh, does he growl with anything else?"

DOG OWNER: "Um no."

ME: "Then stop trying to take a bone from him."
———

❌ 👶🏼 Sometimes we have to live with what we got, and stop trying to find a solution to fit our narrative.

DOG OWNER: "my dog hates babies that crawl."

ME: "Do you have a baby or is she around babies a lot?"

DOG OWNER: "No, but my sister has a baby and they visit often."

ME: "I'd set the dog up for success and not have her out when your nieces is visiting."
———

🤯 Sometimes dog "training" isn't actually training. It's just logical, common sense.
Not everything needs to be trained. Sometimes it's just us learning to respect the dog and do what actually works instead of trying to make the dog conform to our standards of what a "good dog" should do or not do.

🧐 🤔 We often have these narratives about what our dog should do or not do or how it should feel or not feel. That's setting a lot of people and situations up for failure.

💖 Let's flip that. Learn to read body language. Learn to know when to get your dog to a safe place. Learn to set your dog up to succeed and not be set up to do something you don't like.

👉🏼 Not everything needs training, sometimes it just needs better understanding.

We are incredibly grateful to everyone who helped make our wild idea possible this year. Jason and I love every single pup we have the opportunity to meet and care for. Thank you for trusting us with your babies! We are looking forward to many more adventures with our regulars and making new friends in 2024.

Does your dog have anxiety when it comes to fireworks or thunderstorms? One of the benefits of staying with us is 24 hour care and supervision for your friend. One of our boarders, sweet Lilly, is not a big fan of thunderstorms. With all of the bad weather this week, she has been able to listen to soothing music and cuddle with us while she buries her head in the pillows. Let us know if we can help.

Sage and Skye enjoy their good girl affirmations during our drop-in visits. Do you tell yourself “You’re such a good girl!” We all deserve kindness!

With the hot temperatures, here are some doggy guidelines to keep your friend safe:

Have plenty of water
Provide shade
Limit outdoor exercise
Watch their paws- they can burn on concrete
Don’t leave dogs alone in a parked car

Sadie, one of our boarding clients, hired a concierge to offer our gourmet hose water at a moment’s notice.

Stay safe and let us know if you have any questions.

Emmy spent some time with us today to work on training and race Doc around our makeshift track. When you are a good girl, your mom brings treats for the trainers, too. We appreciate and love our clients so much!
