Comparative Genetics and Orthopaedic Laboratory at UW Veterinary Medicine

Comparative Genetics and Orthopaedic Laboratory at UW Veterinary Medicine We are a team of veterinarians and scientists working to advance the understanding of the genetics and progression of companion animal diseases.
(5)

We are always recruiting new participants for our studies. Inquiries please email [email protected] The work we do in the Comparative Genetics Laboratory leads to a better understanding of diseases that affect companion animals. We are currently working on advancing the understanding of canine cranial cruciate ligament rupture (also known as canine anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) rupture),

canine acquired laryngeal paralysis polyneuropathy (also known as laryngeal paralysis, LarPar, or GOLP), and equine degenerative suspensory ligament desmitis (DSLD). Understanding the genetics and progression of these diseases is a critical step toward the development of a genetic screening test and ultimately new drug treatments to help prevent or slow disease development. Many diseases in animals are very similar to human diseases. Canine ACL rupture is very similar to human ACL rupture; equine DSLD is similar to degenerative ligament diseases in people; and laryngeal paralysis is similar to Charcot Marie Tooth disease in humans. Understanding these diseases in animals will lead to a better understanding of disease in people, and can help develop treatments for both. DONATE

Calling all American Labrador owners!
Our genetic screening test for the risk of cruciate rupture is still available for Labrador Retrievers! We are actively recruiting for another round of screening, and are looking for interested clients!
If you have a purebred Labrador Retriever that you would like to submit, please fill out the google form linked here: https://forms.gle/mfxZKEyJFmk77C9q6
The cost is $250 per dog, which would only be billed to you upon receiving results.
Disclaimer: This test is predicting the risk of cruciate rupture in Labrador retrievers. The UW Comparative Genetics Laboratory is not responsible for any breeding decision made in light of results.

Calling all Peruvian owners!
Our genetic screening test for the risk of DSLD is still available for Peruvians! We are actively recruiting for another round of screening, and are looking for interested clients!
The genetic risk testing is ~90% accurate using current data. The genetic risk test can predict the phenotype of the Peruvian Horse as having the genetic risk of a DSLD case or phenotype-negative control.
If you have a Peruvian Paso that you would like to submit, please fill out the google form linked here: https://forms.gle/XPJEqCKvGpnVqwCs9
The cost is $350 per horse, which would only be billed to you upon receiving results.
Disclaimer: The turnaround time on the genetic screening test can be quite long, as we require 96 samples before we are able to genotype the horses because the testing format for the genetic markers consists of a 96 sample array. The more samples we have for testing, the faster the turnaround will be.

🐾 Happy National Black Cat Day! 🐾

Today we celebrate our sleek, mysterious, and absolutely adorable black cats! Did you know that black cats are often considered symbols of good luck and protection in many cultures? Let's break the myths and give these lovely felines the love and appreciation they deserve. If you have a black cat, share a picture and tell us what makes them special. 🖤🐱

While we don’t often get to meet many of our study participants in person, we do have the privilege of connecting with some very special dogs and their owners from across the country. Two of these dogs are Bowie and Davey, littermates who participated in our Ocular Melanosis Study.

Bowie was an AKC Champion, showing from California to Pennsylvania and various points in between. Born in Colorado, he began his show career in Texas. He loved the show ring, making his final appearance at 15 years old at the Cairn Terrier Club of America Roving National Specialty in 2023.

Davey was also a very special dog. He crossed the rainbow bridge in February, just after his 16th birthday. His last day was celebrated with his very own chocolate sundae and a cheeseburger. While his passing has left an enormous hole in his family's hearts, he will always be remembered as a very good boy with a ton of personality and love to give.

We would like to recognize both of these remarkable dogs for their contributions to our research. Though they have recently crossed the rainbow bridge, we are honored to be associated with their legacies, as their DNA will continue to help us investigate ocular melanosis.

We are still recruiting for this study on the genetic basis of ocular melanosis in Cairn Terriers. Our criteria include:
• Purebred Cairn Terriers of any age diagnosed with ocular melanosis
• Purebred Cairn Terriers aged 12 years or older with no diagnosis of ocular melanosis

If you or someone you know has a Cairn Terrier that fits the above criteria, we would love to work with you to enroll them in our study. We can recruit both local and non-local dogs at this time, so coming to UW-Madison is not necessary.

Please contact us by email at [email protected] if you are interested in participating. We are deeply grateful for your support.

To owners of senior dogs in the Madison Wisconsin area
We are currently reopening our body donation program to medium and large breed dogs who are nearing the end of their life journey. We are thus reaching out to: 1) owners whose dogs are either nearing this end point and 2) owners whose dogs are doing well but may potentially reach this point within the next year. Our goal is to provide information to individuals who feel this opportunity may be a good fit for them and their families. We respect that end-of-life decisions can be extremely hard and hope to provide a supportive and respectful option for owners of dogs who may qualify.
The study we are investigating is a late-onset peripheral neuropathy, commonly referred to as laryngeal paralysis or GOLPP. We are looking to collect tissue samples post-mortem from two sets of dogs: 1) Pure-bred Labrador retrievers over 8 years of age regardless of whether there is a diagnosis of laryngeal paralysis and 2) Aged medium to large breed dogs (purebred status is not necessary). To qualify, dogs cannot have a history of neurologic disease, chemotherapy, diabetes, long term use of steroids, or uncontrolled endocrine disease (e.g. Cushing or Addison’s disease). There are other potential exclusion criteria that will be assessed on an individual basis.
For participating in this study we will cover the costs of humane euthanasia and post mortem group cremation.
If you feel your dog may qualify and are interested in learning more, please e-mail us at: [email protected]

Did you know both human and canine athletes can face the risk of tearing their cruciate ligament? If you have a Labrador athlete or know someone who does, consider getting them tested for genetic risk of cruciate rupture. Email us at [email protected] for more information!

Let's cheer on our athletes, both two-legged and four-legged, to reach their goals this summer! 🏅
