We are a 501(c)3 all-breed companion animal rescue based out of Dane County, Wisconsin.

Animals do not reside at our office or clinic; they live in our volunteer foster homes. We offer full-service, no

n emergency veterinary care Monday-Friday. We provide spays, neuters, dental care, and other surgical services for cats and dogs. We also offer wellness health services (annual exams, vaccines, blood work, microchips, etc). Our clinic sees our Underdog animals, and is also open to the public. We offer lower-cost spay/neuter services to everyone, but help with other health services on a sliding scale basis. Email us at [email protected] to make an appointment for veterinary services.

At Underdog, we’re fortunate to be foster-based meaning we’re able to select the foster pets we take in and when. But the reality of rescue work right now is that there are far more animals in need than space and resources to care for them. 😞 Many of our shelter partners are receiving dozens of animals each week and sheltering far more pets than they have space for.

Each time an Underdog claims a foster pet that they think seems like a good fit for their home (it’s up to the fosters… pets are never “assigned”), a shelter worker somewhere breathes a sigh of relief or sheds a tear of joy. 🥹 That’s one unimaginable decision they won’t have to make and one kennel slot that will be open for another pet in need.

Saying “yes” to a foster pet changes multiple lives for the better… forever. 🥰

Each of the pets pictured here will be making the journey north and leaving a kennel space open behind them. If you’ve considered fostering before, now is the time! ⏰ Even if you can only cover a weekend here or there, having a team of temporary fosters can make the difference between getting kiddos out of the shelter and not.

For today’s we have a game. It's called "Where's Rosie"?! 🎉

Rosie was very shy her first few days and getting used her new digs, but after that she opened up. She LOVES to cuddle 🥰 and find small hidey holes around the apartment. Some of her favorite spots include under the bed, on the top shelf of the closet, and in the (dry!) bathtub! 🤣

Rosie also loves watching movies and cuddling with her adopter at night. That is… until it’s playtime! 🤦🏼‍♀️In typical cat fashion, Rosie loves to sleep all day and then play with her toys late at night. She also races the nighttime spirits by running back and forth behind the blinds. What an athlete! 🏃‍♀️

We’re so happy to see Rosie settling in and grateful to her adoption and foster for getting her out of the shelter and into another shot at life. 🐾❤️

Porter is ready to blossom and thrive this spring! 🌼

Check out Mr. Porter, a handsome darling at 9 years old. Finally getting the chance to experience the life that a dog should have from day 1! 🩷

You see, we think Porter was an outside dog and lived his early years on a hard concrete slab throughout all the months in the south. ☹ We don’t know what he all endured, but we did know that it ended once he was rescued as a stray and started his healing journey at Calhoun County Humane Society at one of our partner shelters in Alabama.

His handsome and inquisitive quickly warmed the hearts of several of our fosters and one finally said yes to welcome him with open arms to Underdog! Starting to finally learn the ropes of the inside dog life, Porter is taking it all in stride and slowly adjusting to a home with warmth, food, a cozy bed, and most important love.

At 9 years old Porter is now ready to find his FIRST forever. Let that sink in, his FIRST forever, at the age of 9 years. We know it’s out there and we can’t wait for the day for him to find a family of his own. A family that will understand that he spent 9 long years as an outside dog, and he is working hard on adjusting to the inside domestic life! 🏡

🌟We're thrilled to celebrate the increase in access to veterinary care across the state of Wisconsin thanks to our rockstar partner, Underdog Pet Rescue--and things are only getting better from here! 🌟

According to The Veterinary Care Accessibility Project, 47% of Wisconsin counties faced challenging access to veterinary care, contributing to a crisis of slow adoption rates and rising animal populations in shelters throughout the state. To address this, the ASPCA Northern Tier Shelter Initiative (NTSI) launched the Wisconsin Shelter Access to Spay/Neuter Project, connecting shelters and clinics to expand crucial services. Over the past 15 months, 18 unique agencies in the state have collaborated to increase spay/neuter services for shelter animals--with Underdog Pet Rescue being a key partner.

After receiving funding for a mobile spay/neuter unit, Underdog Pet Rescue began traveling four hours to Taylor County Humane Society to provide regular services. Thanks to this partnership and many others, their mobile unit completed 700+ spay/neuter surgeries, significantly improving spay/neuter access and helping animals get adopted more quickly through Taylor County Humane Society.

We are grateful to Underdog Pet Rescue for their dedication to this initiative and passion for helping shelter pets. We are looking forward to continuing our work with them, along with other organizations to continue changing more animal lives.

Today’s Fun Fact Friday is turning into Fun Cat Friday! It’s Respect your Cat Day!

Here’s a few ways to show respect to the feline friends in your house!

🐱 Provide plenty of opportunities to express their normal feline instincts. Whether that be a cat condo, scratching post, or window seat!

🐱 Handle them gently! Older cats actually don’t tend to prefer to be scruffed! Gentle pets for our feline friends

🐱 Clean litter box = cat preference. Place this in a location where your cat can feel safe

🐱 Avoid sensory overload. Cats have amazing senses of hearing and smell. Attempt to get things at a minimum noise level if possible. Notice your cat running away after you spray a scent? Sensory scent overload for them

And many more!

Although Respect Your Cat Day comes once a year, it’s something to observe 24/7/365. Happy cat = happy home. 🏡

Stop in to bad dog frida this Saturday March 29 from 12-2pm to meet some adorable Underpups! Come say hi 👋 to Bonham and Page ❤️

Sweet baby Bonham is a 15 week old boy. He spends his days playing, napping and nomming on treats. Bonham is an adventurer with a puppy spirit. He seeks approval and loves to please and is very treat motivated. Bonham is great at leash walks, sits like a champ and is doing great with house-training. Bonham’s favorite things are couch snuggles, peanut butter kongs and wrestling with his canine siblings. 🐾

Page is a 15 week old beautiful boy with soulful eyes and a playful spirit. He has big brother energy and enjoys spending time with both human and furry companions. Page is a typical puppy who will flourish with patience, love and training. He is very food motivated and likes to steal treats from his younger brother. Hello, world! I'm Briar Rose🌹 and I'm here to bring a little sunshine into your life! 🌞 I might look like a puppy, but I’m actually about 2.5 years old and weigh only 24 lbs, which means I’m the perfect size for cuddles! 💕

Everyone who meets me says I’m super sweet and friendly. I love being petted, especially those gentle back and belly rubs – they make me melt! 😌 I’m also working on my house training! Sometimes I forget to ask, but I’m getting better! 😊

Even though I’m not a puppy, I’ve still got plenty of energy and love to play with squeaky toys. and I’m always ready for a fun game of chase with the resident pup 🐾 I’ve also met other dogs and I get along with them just fine. I’m learning how to share toys too, though tug-of-war is still a mystery to me! 😅

I love to sniff cats (curiosity, you know!) but if they bat at me or you tell me "no," I’ll leave them alone. I’m not too bothered by them after a while. 🐱

🌷 Kitten season is coming! 🐱

“Kitten Season” is time during which shelters get flooded with kittens born during the warmer months of the year. While it may sound like the most adorable time of year (and it is!), it can also be a hectic time in the rescue world. 🐾

To give you an idea, Underdog had 19 kitten adoptions in February 2024 and 61 in June‼️ We’re expecting this kind of jump again, so we want to be prepared of the influx of mamas and their tiny babes.

How can you help? Extra-special magical 💩 sand!

Babies tend to put things in their mouths, and baby cats are no different! 🤣 But when kittens eat clumping cat litter, it can get stuck in their little bellies leading to all sorts of problems. To mitigate the risk, many kitten fosters choose to use non-clumping cat litter. But since it’s less common, we don’t get as many donations of this extra-special magical 💩 sand.

If you’d like to help a foster prep for kitten season, consider sending a package of this non-clumping (but still magical) dust our way. Our wishlist is linked below, or you can drop donations at our clinic in Madison anytime!

Looking to add a constant companion and certified Silly Boy to your family? Say hello to Domino! 👋

Domino is about 2 years old, 50-ish lbs, and simply wants to be your best friend! 🤗 He loves to be near (or on!) his humans at all times, will happily play with toys and chews and then loaf around not he couch after. When Domino is not playing, he’s very calm and doesn’t bark. ❤️ He’s been learning the basics of doggie manners in his foster home, but Domino’s family should plan to continue his training. Learning to be the bestest boy would also be a great way to bond! 📝

Unfortunately Domino tested positive for heartworm disease when he arrived in Wisconsin. 😕 Heartworm is usually caused by a mosquito bite, is not contagious to other dogs or humans in the house, and is very treatable. Underdog vets have already started Domino on treatment and will provide the rest of his treatment at NO COST to adopters‼️ All the adopters will have to do is help Mr. Dom stay calm during the next few months until he completes treatment and is given the all clear! ❤️‍🩹

Don’t let his treatment dissuade you! Heartworm dogs are some of the best out there, and after treatment, Domino will go on to live a perfectly normal life. All he wants is to be near his people… could that be you?? https://new.shelterluv.com/embed/animal/UPRW-A-62459
