Cat Pawsitive Success!
What if shelter cats could master adorable tricks while building trust and confidence? That’s exactly what’s happening at DCHS with the Cat Pawsitive program!
Through positive reinforcement clicker training, our dedicated volunteers teach cats fun moves like “high five” and “spin.” But it’s about more than just tricks—it’s transforming lives. Cats like TJ, who overcame his anxiety to master “spin,” and Tigger, who turned his fear into confidence with a playful “high five,” are thriving and finding loving homes.
This program keeps cats mentally and physically active while helping them build social skills, shorten their stay, and prepare for adoption.

Silly Cheddar
This morning, Cheddar made her radio debut on 94.9 WOLX, and now she’s ready to meet her new family!
Cheddar is a 42-pound black pittie mix with a soulful and sweet personality. Her wrinkly, expressive face might make her look a little worried, but she’s actually a resilient pup who’s been through a lot and still looks on the sunny side of life.
Once she feels comfortable, Cheddar shines as the ultimate companion. She loves to cuddle, give hugs and kisses, and will stick by your side like a shadow. She’s treat-motivated, sits politely, and absolutely adores squeaky toys and balls.
Cheddar has also charmed the staff while spending time as an office dog. She can be trusted to nap or play with toys when left alone, and when she’s not lounging, she might take on the role of “supervisor” by perching on a chair to oversee your work!
She seems to be housetrained, silly, and is extra-flexible--her goofy poses will make you laugh. Cheddar does need a chicken-free diet to manage a skin condition, but she promises to reward her adopters with endless love and loyalty.
Stop by to meet Cheddar today! Our Adoption Center is open from 2 PM to 7 PM, but please note we’ll be closed Wednesday and Thursday. This sweet girl can’t wait to meet you! Please ask in the Adoption Center to meet her, as she's likely supervising our staff in an office.
Check out the video of Cheddar rolling around in the office—just one example of her silly personality!

2023 Bobcat Release - DCHS Wildlife Center
Have you ever wondered what goes in to deciding when and where to release a rehabilitated wildlife patient?
It's #WildlifeWednesday and we want to share all about it!
As licensed rehabilitators, Dane County Humane Society's Wildlife Center is entrusted with providing each animal its best chance of survival after treatment. There are many complex factors to consider when making these decisions but it helps to break it down into key criteria like timing, animal age, release site location, habitat requirements, local activities, and natural history.
While we consider all of these factors, one of the most important is evaluating whether or not an animal is ready to leave treatment. Are they healthy and fit enough to survive when we release them? Rehabilitators need to look to the future for each individual animal and consider their welfare after they’ve been left to fend for themselves.
Our goal is to reduce pain and suffering and offer best chances for survival.

These puppies are tiny but mighty. Wilder and Pike are joining us at Mounds Pet Food Warehouse at 2422 Montana Ave. in Sun Prairie, today (Nov. 1st) between 12:00 pm and 2:00 pm.
Wilder (pink stripe) and Pike (green stripe) are 2.5-month-old male terrier mixes who were recently transferred up from an overcrowded shelter in Oklahoma. Weighing in a a whopping 4-6 pounds, these puppies are looking for separate homes to grow up to be small and strong. Both puppies can be shy at first, but once they get to know you they have been described as energetic and friendly. Some positive reinforcement training will be helpful in helping these little puppies navigate a big world, so consider joining one of DCHS's dog training classes! Whether you are looking to adopt or could just use some puppy cuddles, be sure to join us at Mounds Pet Food Warehouse!

#Caturday Update
It’s a #Caturday update! Florence, fka Myla, came to DCHS at the end of June and was adopted a couple weeks later in July.
This 10-year-old kitty made herself at home pretty quickly, according to her family. They call her Floor for short because she seems to love rolling around on all the floors in the apartment.
Last week, 17 dogs, 54 cats and 2 critters were adopted into new homes. DCHS also reunited 8 lost dogs and 6 lost cats with their loving families.

Meet Sassy the Cat!
Happy #Caturday from Sassafras! This 4-year-old friendly cat enjoys chillaxing and receiving attention, especially chin scritches. She also likes when you talk to her and comes running out of her cozy nook when you call for her. Sassafras is looking for a quiet home with a family who will spoil her with pets while relaxing on the sofa. To learn more about Sassy, visit www.giveshelter.org/adopt or stop by when our Adoption Center is open from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm this weekend.
Help is on the way! As our van heads off to the airport, we’re excited to share that Dane County Humane Society is stepping up to support animals impacted by Hurricane Helene. Our team is opening our doors to 10 cats from a South Carolina shelter, making room for pets lost or displaced by the storm.
Through an incredible partnership with Lucky Dog Animal Rescue and Greater Good Charities, around 45 dogs and 25 cats are flying to safety in Wisconsin today, including the 10 felines we’re ready to welcome with open arms. This move is crucial—it frees up shelter space for those pets separated from their families and provides a second chance for pets in need.
Stay tuned as these cats settle in and prepare for their new homes. You’ll soon be able to meet them on our adoption page: giveshelter.org/adopt.
Together, we’re making a difference for pets in need.
