It's National Hydration Day! Here is a reminder to make sure your pets are getting plenty of fresh, clean water every day! If your pup is panting when you walk, carrying a water bottle for them that dispenses water or a collapsible bowl is a must. May we suggest a f***y pack full of treats and water accessories to make traveling easier?
If your pup likes to roam the fenced in backyard or your cat enjoys a catio, make sure there is fresh water, in case they are having so much fun they are out there for a while!

It seems like a silly time of year to avoid getting your pet outside but rain, heat, and bugs are real reasons to decide to stay inside occasionally. Your pet may not understand the reason behind their boredom so turn to some tips from Fear Free Happy Homes to help bust up a bland day! https://www.fearfreehappyhomes.com/a-shelter-shares-enrichment-tips-for-pets-at-home/

It may seem early to worry about fireworks but since the 4th of July is a Thursday this year, we may be listening to a longer range of fireworks than other years. Now is the best time to request anxiety medication for your anxious pups. Our doctors want their patients to have the most Fear Free holiday, so consider what you will need on hand for a four-day weekend of noise, and message us today!

Happy Father's Day to all the dads out there! We hope someone shows you some appreciation today, even if it is just some furry cuddles or loving puppy dog stares!

It's time to do a preventative check! This year, because of how much rain we have been receiving, as well as our mild winter, we have record numbers of mosquitos and ticks. This is bad news for our pup companions. 12,220 dogs have tested positive for Lyme Disease this year in Wisconsin. Dane County alone has 769 positive cases from January to May according to the Companion Animal Parasite Council.
There are so many choices for preventatives. Oral medications and injections kill bugs when they bite and topicals and collars work to repel the bugs in the first place. Our team recommends using both when adventuring in high-risk areas such as hiking and camping in the North Woods!
As always, let us know if you need a suggestion or to purchase any preventatives for your pup or cat! We work with our vendors to offer rebates and discounts for most of our preventative products!

Where is Tinka this Wednesday? Just looking pretty as a picture at our front desk!
We love the beautiful blooms that Julie brought in to share with us!
When you see videos and photos of cats on epic adventures, do you wish your cat wanted to be an adventurer? Do you wish you could take them anywhere in a carrier without there being a game of hide and seek or chase?
We have a number of tips and tricks to help you make getting your cat out of the house easier! We may not be able to see them in a kayak on the Yahara but maybe just a smooth transition to the clinic could be in your future!
Send us an email or text and we will send over some of our best strategies! [email protected]

We are rolling into thunderstorm season and you are not alone if your dog gets scared during storms. Our team has a few suggestions for both stormy weather and fireworks to help you and your pet feel at ease.
1. Thunder shirts can help create a calming pressure much like a weighted blanket does for humans.
2. There are medications we can prescribe to help animals to feel calm in anxiety-inducing situations like during storms, car rides or their trip to the clinic. Message us if you would like to try medication to help ease some of your dog's stress.
3. Moving your dog to an interior room and playing music or a tv show that can drown out the sound of loud and abrupt noises.
4. Give your dog something to engage in to distract them. Now is a great time to get out a dog puzzle, play a "find it" game with them or work on some training games (inside of course.)
5. Time bathroom breaks so that you aren't going out during the thick of the storm. Luckily weather Aps are great for letting us know roughly when to expect bad weather and when the worst of the storm has passed.

It's Where's Tinka Wednesday!
We wanted to reassure you that your favorite clinic kitty is still hiding around the clinic. She doesn't always hide in cupboards, but when she does, she's blends in pretty well!

Next week Monday is Memorial Day! We would love to see you at the Monona Memorial Day Parade but the clinic will be closed.
Today is a great day to:
1. Check that your pet will have enough medication and food to get them through the holiday weekend or for your travels. Let us know your needs today, so we can fill a prescription or order something for you to arrive before Friday!
2. Make a pet plan! Will your pet be traveling with you? Are they boarding for the weekend? Will you be having a big gathering that pets might get overwhelmed at? No matter your plans, think about what you will need in order to make sure that you are ready!

Spring is in the air, the rabbits in our neighborhoods are quadrupling their population and it is officially puppy and kitten season.
Maybe your family is on the hunt for their next family member! Before you pick up the first kitten that waddles your way, we would absolutely encourage you to do a lot of research before bringing home a little furry friend. It is always hard to find reputable information so don't forget that your friendly neighborhood vet clinic is here to help. We have so many resources including training lists, positive ways to introduce new family members to your established group, food recommendations, the best leashes (retractable leashes are a recipe for disaster,) and so much more.

Do you have any fun plans for the weekend that involve your pets?
Will any of these events involve exploring? Make sure you remember to bring along water and make sure your pet is on preventatives!
If you know you are heading to a tick-populated area, our team recommends both an oral monthly chew and a topical or collar that will repel bugs.
If you are heading out to a sunny location, make sure pets with a light or thin coat have sun protection because pets can get sunburn too!

Does your dog love people and behave well while walking? Do you like large crowds?

Today is National Animal Disaster Preparedness Day. We don't know about you but when something scary happens, we like to have a plan. One really amazing tool to check out is an App put together by the American Red Cross for Pet First Aid. It is an absolute must when the clinic is closed or you need to know something fast. Hi Social Media Friends!
I just wanted to say hello and introduce myself in case you ever wonder where most of this content comes from.
My name is Brenda and I am the manager at Four Lakes Veterinary Clinic. Today is my 5 year anniversary with this amazing team of humans and pets. I like to believe that fate guides us home if we let it and I absolutely feel blessed to spend my work days here.
Most of my time here is spent behind the scenes but occasionally you will catch sight of me cuddling a cute pet, running out food or medications, and answering the phones.
If you want to learn a little bit more about me, check out this link: https://fourlakesvet.com/brenda

If you own a pet, likely at some point your pet is going to get into something they shouldn't or be exposed to something that upsets their insides. Should that unfortunate event happen, you can be prepared by checking out Dr. Scarlett's most recent article in Madison Locally Sourced. It may not be the most glamorous read but it sure is informative! https://madisonlocallysourced.com/the-thing-pet-owners-dread-most-diarrhea/

It's Four Lakes Vet Clinic's birthday today!
Just a little post dental cuddle and grooming!

Sometimes when we have an extra moment or two we spend it on loving gestures like carrying patients around, grooming them, or just petting them and telling them what a good boy or girl they are!
Today Xiomara perched on the edge of our enclosure to give Riley some extra love while he is recovering from his dental procedure.

Today is AAHA Day!
You may have seen the AAHA logo somewhere in our building, either on our scrubs, exam rooms, or handouts. Animal care isn't regulated in the same way as care for humans. By holding ourselves to the standards set forth by The American Animal Hospital Association(AAHA,) we make sure we are providing care that is up to date, regulated, and sets us ahead of other professionals in our field.
Today is AAHA Day and we are so thankful that AAHA is part of who we are at Four Lakes Veterinary Clinic.

Four Lakes Veterinary Clinic opened on April 8, 2013, with the goal of being compassionate, professional and responsive (CPR). We started out working to be “fear-free” before that was even a buzz word in the veterinary community. By keeping our cat and dog patients separated, using calming pheromones in exam rooms, and providing lots of treats, we aimed to keep vet visits low-stress for patients and their owners. We are now a Gold-certified Cat Friendly Practice as well as being a Fear-Free Certified Practice.
We are proud to be part of the Monona and East Madison community. Many of our Lake Edge neighbors are within walking distance, so they can bring in their dogs for “happy visits” just to get treats and pets; thus we aren’t just the “people who poke.”
We sponsored the Monona Farmer’s market and local Little League. We have fundraisers throughout the year, raising money to support cancer research in dogs and people, WISCares (an outreach program through UW vet school that provides veterinary care for homeless people and their pets), local rescue groups, and Pets for Vets. Giving back is an important mission for us.
Four Lakes Vet is a full-service veterinary clinic for dogs and cats. Our wellness (annual) exams are thorough, checking all body systems. Vaccines are given based on the pet’s lifestyle and current research. We do not over-vaccinate, but want to make sure your pet is protected against the diseases to which they are most likely to be exposed. We have digital x-rays and take dental x-rays during all of our dental procedures. This allows us to see problems under the gums, which isn’t always evident on an oral exam. We have an in-house laboratory to help with diagnoses, if your pet is not feeling well. We are comfortable working with anxious dogs and cats and are happy to talk about training and medications that can make an anxious pet much happier with life.
We have cat condos for our boarding cats and also offer grooming for cats.
We are open Monday through Friday and the 1st and 3rd Saturday morning of each month (8:30 am - 12 pm). We are happy to answer any questions you might have in person, by phone (608-819-6750), or by email ([email protected]).
