Hunter safety doesn't just apply to humans - we need to keep our working dogs safe too! Here are some tips to get the most out of your hunting season and avoid a trip to urgent care:
➡Use high visibility gear (blaze orange looks good on both you and your dog!)
➡Update their vaccines and use year-round flea and tick prevention (we highly recommend the Lyme vaccine)
➡Confirm their microchip is in place and working (ask your primary care vet to check if you're not sure)
➡Keep their collar on, and make sure it has your name and phone number
➡Have a first aid kit (ask your primary care vet for what to pack and how to use it)
➡Take breaks for water and snacks
➡Don't let them drink from lakes or ponds (they may have a deadly toxin called cyanobacteria)
➡Be aware of the temperature (they might overheat before you do)
➡Let them warm up and cool down, just like you would before and after heavy activity to avoid injury
➡Don't let them eat from carcasses and be aware of possible toxic plants and venomous/dangerous animals
➡Consider training to wear dog boots to protect their paws
➡Keep them leashed when possible, and make sure they have flawless recall even when distractions are present
➡Keep them crated while in the car (it's the safest place for them to be if there's an accident)
