MVS is now offering extracorporeal therapy, sometimes called "dialysis for pets". We currently are the only veterinary hospital in the state with this program and are proud to be bringing it to Madison.
While this can be life-saving for cats and dogs, we are also in desperate need to blood donors. Blood products are required in order to perform this therapy and we rely on our team's pets and pets in the community for this. There are some great perks to your pet being a blood donor, including free annual bloodwork as well as heartworm & flea and tick prevention.
You can learn more about your pet being a blood donor on our website here: https://www.mvsvets.com/our-services/blood-bank/

Alex is a 5yo Goldendoodle who came to our ER service 2 weeks ago after losing his ability to walk right after jumping off the deck. He was paralyzed in his left hindlimb but had some movement in his right. He was transferred to the Neurology team and an emergency MRI was performed promptly in the same afternoon. MRI found extensive changes within the spinal cord from T1-T8, most consistent with a condition called Fibrocartilagenous embolism (FCE). In the video, Dr. Lau is showing where this can be seen on the MRI scan of Alex’s back.
FCE is a stroke-type condition where a small piece of the cartilage from the intervertebral disc (IVD) blocks the blood supply to part of the spinal cord, which can result in rapid paralysis. Fortunately, it is not a painful condition and treatment is with physiotherapy and supportive nursing care. Prognosis is often favorable for dogs who can still move their legs or feel their toes, but also depends on the extent and severity of the injury.
As for Alex, we are very excited that he is back on his feet and started walking on his own just after 2 weeks! We expect Alex to show continuous improvement over the next few months - Go Alex! Photos of the sweet boy in the comments. ♥️🐾
