April is National Heartworm Awareness Month! To learn more about heartworm disease, please follow the link below to the American Heartworm Society’s website, which describes disease transmission, symptoms, health implications, and treatment. We offer a variety of oral, topical, and injectable heartworm preventatives to keep your pet protected. We recommend that prevention be given continuously year-round, as it only takes a single infected mosquito bite to give your pet this potentially fatal disease.
For dogs that are on prevention continuously year-round, annual heartworm testing is still necessary to ensure the absence of break-through cases. While prevention is highly effective - like most medications, there is not 100% guaranteed efficacy. If your dog has missed prevention at any point during the year, retesting will be warranted as well.
