Spot the difference!

While these two cut greens look very similar and both are from the brassicacea family, they are a bit different in flavor from one another. These will both be highlighted at our farm stand on Monday and at market on Tuesday.

Great additions to your fall salads. Absolutely delicious with some roasted winter squash or sweet potatoes, roasted garbanzo beans and seeds. Of course you can throw them into your cold salads too and boost up your salad’s nutritional value!

Greens in the Ironman Kale Mix: Lacinato, Red Russian, and Curly Kale varieties

Greens in the Hotshot Mix: mizuna, mustard greens, tatsoi varieties

Tot Morning at the farm is coming up! Mark your calendars for Wednesday, November 6th & December 4th from 8-11am.

We have the mud kitchen open along with some nature books, magnet tiles, and usually a surprise activity. This is a parent/guardian led time to explore, play, and find community in the garden.

3rd Grade Champs! This crew from came to the farm and ripped out the very last of our tomato plants. They even went after the T-posts… like the champs they are!

Not only did these kiddos do some hard work at the farm, but they also continued working on how to work together as a team, how to persevere in doing a difficult task, how to respect boundaries (like pull out the tomato plants, but not the pepper plants, which are right next to the tomatoes), and how to communicate respectfully. All of this while being outside in nature, which is so good for us! And exploring and observing creatures (like spiders and ants) at the farm.

Okay, so what is Tot Morning? - It’s a time when the farm is open to families to bring their little to come and explore the farm… for FREE! We have a mud kitchen for kiddos to play in, and other activities for kiddos to do, if they so choose. Also, you are encouraged to walk your kiddos around the farm and explore what’s new and different from the previous months.

Homeschooling? - You are welcome to use this open farm time to come explore the farm with your homeschool kiddos too!

Please note that this is a time for parent/guardian to help their kiddos explore and they are responsible for their kiddo(s). 😊

Excited to see y’all on Wednesday!

Green Tomatoes & 1st Grade

First grade came to the farm today and did a wonderful job gleaning green tomatoes! First grade parents… have fun making fried green tomatoes this week! Goodlettsville Farmers Market customers… your green tomatoes tomorrow are courtesy of 1st grade! They did a wonderful job!!!

Okay, so you may ask, what was the learning experience?
1) we learned about seed germination and observed different stages of growth at the farm
2) we tasted arugula! And touched on plant classifications, like those stinky brassicas that smell like farts when cooked (or rotting)
3) we learned how to persevere through dealing with uncomfortable things, like touching dirty plants to harvest the green tomatoes. This may seem like an easy task, but sometimes those tactile experiences are difficult if we’re not exposed to them on a regular basis.
4) we learned about sharing, cooperation, and problem solving
5) we got our hands DIRTY! It was glorious!!!

This classroom (the garden) is an unorthodox classroom, but it was our original classroom. Our hands and bodies were made to work. Our hands are the perfect tool for the garden and can do sooooo much work that needs to be done in the garden. AND WE GET TO BE A PART OF THAT WORK!

2nd Grade Fun at the Farm

Loved having these curious and adventurous kiddos at the farm today. 🙌 They picked green beans like nobody’s business! We wandered around the farm too, observing what’s changed since their last visit. Man are they observant! They even braved the mean ants at the farm, which was quite the adventure. 🤣 Lots of bean snacks occurred while we marked around the farm, which goes to prove that kiddos will eat veggies, especially those they’re invested in, like these that they picked!

Sunflowers… these are the last plantings of our sunflowers for 2024. Can’t wait for the beauties to be ready for us to bring to market for y’all.

The type of sunflowers grown are seeds from and varieties are for their no pollen blooms, which make for an easier to maintain flower for your table.

Mud Fun. No direction. Completely student led… once out in the environment for creativity, getting dirty, and having some fun in nature. Getting exposure to strange textures (like dirt, mud, Woodchips, even weeds on your legs as you’re walking) is very important for kiddos as they age so they can do some@of the “dirty jobs” that are crucial to society (like farming 😉😊).

Good morning from the farm

Crops are growing. Crops are dying. There are successes and failures too. Pictured are our beans. Velour and maxibel. Also, the little seedlings in the foreground are pink beauty radishes. This is my third round of seeding radishes since the beginning of July. Now for those who may not know, radishes usually take about a month from seeding to harvest. If y’all haven’t noticed, I’ve had not a single bunch of radishes since the spring, ergo, failure. Not sure if it was because of my watering schedule or because of the excess in rain, but that first round of summer radishes tanked! So here’s praying this third round does better (it’d be nice if the second round does too 🤣😉).

Same way in life. There are success and failures. We learn and grow, whether we want to or not, through those end and flows of life. Buena suerte or your journey. I’ll keep y’all posted on the farm’s. 😉

Tot morning is coming up this Thursday morning! Beat the heat by coming earlier. As usual the mud kitchen will open and ready for some creative minds while parents build community. Parents are always welcome to walk their kiddos around the farm and explore the new things growing at the farm.

Looking forward to seeing y’all at the farm!

Bean Harvest in the “cool” (is it really cool when it’s already 80 out before 7:30in the morning?!) of the day. This heat is tough, not only on us humans who plant, tend, and harvest the food that comes to your market, but also on the plants. These beans are doing well as we’re trying to@keep@our crops well hydrated through this heatwave as well as they’re planted closely together, which creates a wonderful cover for the soil. This cover helps keep the moisture from the watering in the soil instead of evaporating. The “empty” beds you see in the foreground are bean beds that were just seeded yesterday. Drip tape helps with directly watering where the beans were seeded. We use the direct seeder with the bean plate and then lay the drip@tape where she seeded the beans, putting staples on the drip@tape line to secure it from wind moving it. Then we take Zipper from to cover the beans and drip tape together as the earthway seeder doesn’t cover the seeds well (and we don’t want those buggars to dry out while they’re trying to germinate and in this heat!). This also adds an extra layer of protection from the drip tape moving in any wind we may have.

Garlic & Onion Cleaning & Sorting

Still harvesting and curing. Trimming, cleaning, and sorting. Slowly but surely we move through this process during the warmer portions of our work time. This allows the students and volunteers to get out of the heat of the sun and take advantage of this blessing of a shaded space that was provided to the farm through your donations. Thank you.

Good morning from The Madison Farm!

Birds are singing, sun is shining with its summer strength. We hope you have a lovely Friday as you go forth into the weekend. Rest and enjoy the beauty that we live in as you explore Tennessee this weekend.

What you see growing in this picture from left to right:
-Jade (green) Beans
- Velour (purple) Beans
- Gourmet Lettuce Blend
- Pink Beauty Radishes
- Gourmet Lettuce Blend
- Astro Arugula
- Detroit Dark Red Beets

In order to keep a consistent flow of produce to our wonderful community, we do multiple plantings (or successions) of crops that we harvest for your tables. There are a few crops that we don’t grow as they are not conducive for summer production (I.e. turnips and kales)just like we don’t grow tomatoes and other warm loving crops during the winter. A normal dance and balance of growing within our seasons. Enjoy the bounty and flavors of this abundant season.

Morning weeding while it’s still cool out… student workers from are working hard this summer. Not only weeding, but planting, harvesting, processing (preparing harvested produce for market), and more at the farm. If you’re interested in helping support the work study program at the farm, please click on our link in the bio. This program helps the students not only build a resume and work experience (and frankly a life skill too), but also helps them pay their tuition and be an investor in their learning.

Rooted in God, Growing for Good

The Madison Farm is tucked away in Neelys Bend of Madison, just north of Nashville. The Madison Farm is a reboot of the original that was founded in 1904 on 440 acres that was Madison College, and is today Madison Academy.

Shannon and Jenni are the Farm Managers of The Madison Farm; in collaboration with two students, Kendra and Patrick, are spearheading this agriculture revolution for our schools and community.

The purpose of The Madison Farm is to revolutionize holistic learning and service through year-round biointensive farming. We plan to do this by empowering people to live a life of intention by integrating education with agriculture. It is our goal to develop practical skills in students, while enhancing the Madison area by providing opportunities for healthy-living education, community outreach, and sustainable initiatives. We are Rooted in God and Growing for Good.
