Daylight savings begins on Sunday and as much as we are all look forward to longer days and warmer weather, the loss of an hour can really throw everyone off...especially our routine-following pets. ⏰ Here are a couple ways you can help your pet adjust to the change.

📅Keep in mind your pets are creatures of habit and thrive on routine, they use daylight to tell them when it's time to eat, sleep, and wake up.

⏰If you have to make adjustments to your pet’s routine, do it gradually. Slowly shift their feeding and walking times each day.

💊Talk to your vet about when to administer your pet’s medications. Some medications, shifting administration an hour isn't a big deal, but for others you may need to adjust a bit slower.

🐶Consistency is key! Once the change happens, stick to the new routine as much as possible!

🌞 More daylight means more time for fun activities! Use this opportunity for some extra fun with your pet!

😃Be patient and stay positive! It can be difficult to adjust to any change in routine, even more so for pets.

❤Happy Update Alert!❤

We LOVE receiving updates on our patients and Maisie's made us extra happy! 🙂 At just 4-months-old this adorable girl developed a rapidly growing mass on her zygomatic arch (a part of the skull that protects the eye and provides structure to the face). Maisie was diagnosed with fibrosarcoma. After a CT scan showed there were no signs that the cancer had spread, Dr. Shiu with our oncology department, recommended immediate surgery with the intent to cure Maisie's cancer...and that's exactly what it did! 🎉

Maisie's family let us know that she is enjoying life to the absolute fullest...not even noticing her permanent wink. She plays and rough houses with her housemate, Matilda and doesn't ever miss an opportunity to play in the snow...never missing a beat. And that is EXACTLY what we like to hear!

Please help us in sending a BIG CONGRATULATIONS to Maisie and her family! 💕

After being treated for an ear infection a week prior, Linus became very ill, tilting his head, and unable to walk. His family immediately brought him into our emergency department.

A CT scan (or computed tomography scan) of his head showed a chronic middle ear infection that was in both ears and caused inflammation that progressed into the membranes around his brain (meningoencephalitis). Linus was transferred to our internal medicine team where they performed a procedure where his middle ears were flushed out under anesthesia. The team then immediately started him on an an extended course of antibiotics and anti-inflammatory drugs.

Linus improved immediately and was able to go home to his family the following day! 🎉 We were thrilled to hear from his family that he is feeling great and that superb cat balance is back to normal! Way to go, Linus! 💕

Our friends at Fetch Wisconsin Rescue rescued a mama and her puppies several weeks ago. Unfortunately, living the harsh life of a stray had caused the mom to not receive the proper nutrients to produce enough milk for her puppies. The puppies were malnourished and spent several days in the care of our emergency team receiving treatment and learning how to bottlefeed.

We recently received an update from Fetch showing how well the puppies continue to bottlefeed and letting us know that their weight continues to increase. 🎉 Way to go little ones! Cheers to a long, healthy, and happy life! ❤

Thank you, Fetch for all you do to help pets find their people and live wonderful lives full of love and happiness.

If you're looking to add a furry friend to your family, please visit: https://fetchwi.org. These little sweeties won't be available for adoption for a few more weeks, but you can keep an eye out for them, or see all of the other pets looking for their forever homes. 💕

Last week Barkley and his family celebrated him being in remission from lymphoma for 4 AMAZING YEARS!!!!! 🥳🥳🥳 We were honored and thrilled when they visited our oncology department and let us join in the celebration...and give some well deserved snuggles! 🎉

Barkley began chemotherapy treatment with our oncology department immediately after his lymphoma diagnosis in September of 2020. We are ecstatic to report that he has been in remission since completing treatment the following February! Barkley's mom, Dr. Mia Hospel, Founding Veterinarian of Passion for Paws Veterinary Clinic and Boarding/Daycare Facility let us know that Barkley is continuing to live life to the absolute fullest and is feeling great! 💕

Congratulations, Barkley! We are so incredibly happy for you and your family! And, thank you for letting us take part in celebrating this tremendous milestone. ❤

These two have a very special bond and that was never more apparent than when Cha Cha (the little 5lb hero) saved her brother, Billy's life just a few weeks ago.

Billy's family was fast asleep when in the middle of the night they were woken up when Cha Cha, who normally sleeps quietly through the entire night, came into their room and started continuously barking them. Thinking she must have to go outside they awoke to find that Billy had gotten into a backpack that had several bottles of medication in it, including ibuprofen which is toxic to dogs.

Billy had chomped on the plastic bottles and ingested an unknown amount of medications. His family immediately brought him into our emergency department and after spending several days with us receiving treatment, Billy was able to get back home to his loving family...and snuggled right in with his tiny, life-saving sister.

She might be small, but thankfully Cha Cha had a very big voice that night. Had she not alerted her family of what Billy had been up to, his family likely wouldn't have discovered it until they woke up the next morning, and the outcome could have been much different. So today we are not only giving Billy a huge CONGRATULATIONS on feeling better and being back home, but a HUGE CHEERS to Cha Cha who incredibly saved her brother's life! Well done, Cha Cha. 💕

Our very own Dr. Palmer was asked to visit Leopold Elementary to speak with second graders on what it's like being a veterinarian in the emergency department. The students learned all about what it's like to be a veterinarian, the pets that she treats, and how Dr. Palmer helps sick and injured pets feel better and get back to their loving families. They even got to see some X-rays with some of the students being able to determine which bones were broken.

Thank you, Dr. Palmer for helping these students learn more about veterinary medicine and how important it is in helping our pets live long, healthy, and happy lives! 💕

This is Lady. Lady decided it would be a good idea to eat a lot of dark chocolate. 🍫 Lady was very wrong. Thankfully, Lady's family discovered her snacking session shortly after and whisked her off to our emergency department. Our ER team jumped into action inducing vomiting and administering the treatment Lady needed. We are happy to report, Lady made a full recovery and is so glad to be back home with her loving family (just look at that smile 😁).

Although a tasty snack for humans, chocolate can be harmful and life-threatening to dogs due to two toxic components, caffeine and theobromine. Dark chocolate and baking chocolate are the most toxic types of chocolate for dogs, and even small amounts can be fatal. We are so thankful Lady's family was able to swiftly get her to us for immediate treatment so she can continue enjoying life to the fullest! 💕

Brrrr! 🥶 Today is a great day to stay warm and cozy inside! The temperature may have increased a bit today and tomorrow, but the bitterly cold weather is coming! 🥶 No matter the temperature, the colder months come with a number of potential dangers to your pet, including cold temperatures and chemical hazards. Just because your pet has a “fur coat” doesn't mean they’re prepared for all the weather Winter has to offer. Temperatures below freezing, along with wind chill can be dangerous and even deadly. Keep your pets safe this winter with these winter safety tips.

🧤Don’t leave pets in vehicles: Winter conditions can be just as dangerous and life-threatening as the summer heat.

🧣Bundle up...both yourself and your dog! A sweater, jacket, and booties may help your dog enjoy the cold weather more comfortably.

🥶Consider your pet's health when choosing outdoor activities: Cold weather may worsen medical conditions such as arthritis, and dogs with joint disease may be more prone to slipping and falling on ice and snow.

❄️Monitor the windchill: No matter the temperature outside, windchill combined with dampness, rain, sleet, and wet snow can be dangerous.

🌬Protect paws: Trim hair between toes to avoid formation of ice balls, and use pet-friendly balms to protect before they become cracked. Avoid salted sidewalks because it can cause irritation and potentially severe disease if licked.

🧤Avoid ice: Stay clear of frozen water not deemed safe by local authorities.

🧣Modify walks: If it's freezing outside, let your pet stretch their legs with brief, frequent walks rather than long walks.

🥶Prevent antifreeze poisoning: Just a small amount can cause permanent and fatal kidney damage, and with its sweet taste, many animals find it irresistible. Never drain antifreeze into the street, wipe up any spills, and store it in tightly closed containers out of reach of pets (and children).
