It’s that time of year again! Mice will be looking to set up their cozy homes for the winter. Here’s an interesting alternative to poison which is so terribly damaging to our wildlife. Those black bait boxes do not poison then contain the mice. The poisoned mice exit the box then will poison wildlife that preys on them. Please consider alternatives to second generation rodenticides.

REUNITED!!!! From the owner, Gabby was just found Someone picked her up on route 77 and started knocking on doors and found the woman who contacted me earlier who saw the post you made. Thank you !!!!! Just for a bit of back info earlier this morning a woman on Guilfordk Rd spotted Gabby in her yard and fed her a biscuit but then she ran. This same person quickly called the owner who was out searching for Gabby. The finder knocked on the door of the woman who fed Gabby the biscuit earlier!
Thank you to this wonderful community who worked together to reunite Gabby with her family. The family worked non stop to get their girl home. Thank you to CTDGRV Carol and the ACO’s in all the surrounding towns who shared the post and searched as well. Happy endings are the best!!!! Great reunion picture of Gabby and Yogi in comments

We've been getting a lot of calls lately about snapping turtles. Here's some helpful information from Connecticut Department of Energy & Environmental Protection (DEEP)

Just look at that shell! Talk about curb appeal! 🐢

The DEEP Wildlife Division is currently receiving many reports of nesting turtles from Connecticut residents. This is the time of year when female turtles travel to find the “perfect” spot to dig a nest and lay eggs.

Sometimes, the location of a nest may seem questionable, but you should not intervene with a turtle in the process of laying eggs. The best course of action is to let the turtle be.

Once the eggs are laid, the female turtle covers them up and leaves. In the case of this snapping turtle, the eggs will hatch in approximately 80 to 90 days. The young will dig themselves out of the nest and instinctively head toward water.

Female turtles must often navigate across roadways during the nesting season. Should you see a turtle crossing the road and decide to stop and help it, be sure to keep the turtle pointed in the direction it is going. Only stop and assist if it is safe to do so.

More information on the snapping turtle is at https://portal.ct.gov/deep/wildlife/fact-sheets/common-snapping-turtle

The hot weather is upon us! Please do your dog a favor and leave them in the comfort of their home when you are out and about. Parked cars become ovens. This happens quickly because they absorb heat from the roof, the hot pavement and the dashboard. Cracked open windows do very little if anything to cool a car. Friends please be on the lookout for distressed dogs and don’t hesitate to call the Police Department. Speak directly to a dispatcher please don’t just leave a message.

Fawn season is approaching! If you see a fawn bedded down please stay away and keep pets away from the area. Absolutely do not touch or allow children to approach for a photo opp. This is terrifying to a fawn and can bring on Capture Myopathy which can lead to death. Please contact Animal Control only if:
1. Fawn is on the edge of a road
2. Nonstop crying for hours
3. Lying on its side
4. Visibly injured/has little yellow rice type flecks

Don't be a fawnnapper! It's very common for moms to leave babies for the day while they forage. It's their hope that if they leave it near humans that it will help keep predators away. Doe will often hide fawns near your home or even right outside your home. This does not mean the baby is orphaned. Please contact a licensed Rehabilitator before moving a fawn. Unless they are crying, running around looking for the mom or showing signs of dehydration or hunger, they should be left alone.❤️
