Looking like the worst of the weather being behind us, at least for now. Heaters have been hard at work and our electric meter has too as we heated the cathouse, the back porch, and multiple outside shelters for our alley friends. Not looking forward to the electric bill of course. Last months was over 300 so I shudder to imagine the next one. If anyone would like to help financially or in supplies it would be greatly appreciated. We think keeping them warm and safe is worth whatever we have to do.

Hope everyone has been safe and warm in this crazy start of a new year.

It is with excitement that we announce Ginger is heading to her new furever home. Yet it with tears in my eye that I say goodbye to such a special girl. Ginger has been with us since she was a kitten in 2021. A beautiful smart girl who was affectionate from day 1. Included in pics is when she had to wear the cone after surgery as a kitten cause she was just too cute.
Have the best life ever Ginger!!

Today is the last day of 2024, its been a rough year for sure but we are so very thankful and humbled by the help we received, both from the great I AM, and the generosity of all the wonderful people who reached out to help. It has definitely been a humbling experience.

But we celebrate today the adoption of our precious Ames. Ames is a very special, highly intelligent, sweet girl who was rescued as a feral kitten. She will start her new life with her former roommate, previously adopted Parker. We wish her the absolute best life, and will eagerly await updates on how she adapts to her new life.

Here at A Place for Benny we have assembled a crew and surround ourselves with people who could not care more. We can't always help the way we want to for our resources are extremely limited, especially since my heart issues, but we always try to do what we can. Thankfully we have alot of wonderful support from a great community and we cannot be more thankful. If you would like to help below is our information, if all you can give is prayer, we gratefully accept that too. For there is absolute power in prayer.

Found this toy up on the shelf this morning, and Toby a few minutes later showed me it was his. I told them that tomorrow they would get to see what was in thier stockings!! Read the first chapter of Luke this morning to them, tomorrow morning we get to the birth of our Lord just on time for Christmas day.

Then got home and found these boxes on my front porch. I think they will have a good Christmas.

A year ago today I lay in a hospital bed at Nortons in Louisville with one of the doctors telling my wife I probably wouldn't make it out of the hospital. This story is long but here goes.

While working in 20 degree weather prying concrete posts out of the ground I promised my wife if it rained the next day I would go to ER and get checked out. For the previous year I spent in agony losing weight, struggling to catch my breath, and such little energy it was an absolute struggle just to get out of bed much less do the cat duties and work full time, ( there were times i swore I heard my former Marine trainers screaming "get up Smith!" and I would push on). Different Dr's had not figured out what was the issue. Well, it rained so off to the ER I went.
At the ER it was discovered that I had blood clots on both my lungs and they wanted to send me by ambulance to Louisville. At first I refused it, but they convinced me I had no real choice. Once in Louisville they ran test after test, and eventually sent me to Nortons heart center for they had found that my heart was only running at 13%. They figured out that I had at least one massive heart attack the previous year and I was deteriorating. Decisions on what to do fell to an entire team of specialists. This began the 2 week ordeal of hospital stay. It was decided that since my heart was not healthy enough for open heart that they would try a stint and see what that could do for me. They ended up putting in 3. During this time a few wonderful volunteers stepped in and ran the cathouse, taking a huge load off of my mind, the Madison-Jefferson County Humane Society and Lanthier Winery & Distillery came through with a huge load of supplies.
Fast forward to today, while yes I am still in heart failure and still will have to deal with severe leak in my mitral valve my refraction is now in the normal range. Which is absolutely miraculous. Over this last year we have seen miracle after miracle, as in we struggled at time to keep the cathouse afloat financially last year, but how we have made it work this year with such a loss of my ability to work like previously. The donations and help has not come from businesses and big groups, its come from the outpouring of caring and love from regular people, and quite a bit of Devine intervention. I am actually at a loss at how we have made it through and thrived. His grace is the only way this could have happened.
So my point is, thank you from the bottom of my busted up heart to first Christ our King, and to all out there who have stepped in and given of your time, your prayers, your wallet, and your support. We are ever so grateful and humbled by it all. For if you are not a believer, just ask me, for I have just scratched the surface here of all the miraculous things He has done for me personally and for A Place for Benny. I will be willing to sit and share .

As much as I despise photos of myself, my wife caught me napping on the couch with Bert and Pepper. I thought it was hilarious how Pepper was trying to emulate big brother Bert.
If I leave this world tomorrow this is what I want to be remembered for, not the military, not what I did for a living, but for having a blessed life surrounded by lots of love. A testimony of His grace. Through service of others, be it humans, the four legged, or the winged ones, ones life will be full of blessings.

who, what, and why...

taking care of, and rescuing abandoned or feral cats is an expensive venture, i created “a place for benny” to help with the cost of food, shelter, and vet care of the kitty’s in my care. for care i do, they are more than strays, more than “just cats”...each one is special, has something of value to offer, and they mean a hell of a lot to me. there must be a place for all the “benny’s” out there. this is just the start, will add more later once i figure out what i am doing. everything made will be made with care right here in madison indiana.

why name this a place for benny, and who is benny? benny is a feral cat born in the alley behind my house. i fed him and his siblings, built them shelters, and cared for them. i got benny and his sister joon fixed and thought i had found them a good home. sadly that was not the case. the people who took them were not truthful from the beginning and told me they had a barn, acreage, and would be a great place for them. after they left, maybe it was something said, maybe it was a gut feeling, but i felt something was wrong. over the next few weeks i asked for them back on numerous occasions and was told no and that the cats were fine, i offered cash and after i found out he was an avid hunter i offered a $700 rifle in trade, was still denied. desperate to quell the nagging feeling that something was wrong i contacted a friend who’s mother in law lived near the property where the cats were and i asked for permission to park there overnight while i did a midnight “raid” to get my cats back, while speaking to them they asked what my cats looked like. i showed them pictures and lo and behold there was joon, she had been living under my friends in laws porch for over 2 weeks. as i soon found out the people i gave them to, apparently did not live at the property (her parents place i guess) and the cats were released into a barn full of hunting dogs, so scared they took off. wouldve been ok if they told me, i would have come and got them. but they lied and kept telling me they were fine. so now, joon lives with me, has been through an ordeal but is a loving girl. i have been searching for benny now for a little over 3 months, have met some amazing people who have helped me look, allowed me to traipse through their property at all hours, and i will always be grateful for their kindness. there is and always will be a reward for his return and i will never give up on him, until i find him or find that he has a proper home. so i named this venture “a place for benny” in his honor, for there has to be a place for him.
