🌨️ IMPORTANT: Winter Storm Alert – Protect Your Pets! 🌨️

Hopkins County Humane Society wants to remind all pet owners of the EXTREME DANGERS posed by the impending winter storm, especially to those who have animals kept outside. The forecast calls for near zero degree temperatures, freezing rain, and heavy snow, all of which can be deadly for outdoor pets – particularly those left on chains.

🐾 Danger of Chained Pets in Freezing Weather:

When animals are left chained outside during such weather, they have NO way of seeking shelter or getting out of the elements. Chains can become entangled in snow or ice, preventing them from moving to a safe area. This can lead to severe frostbite, hypothermia, or worse. Please, bring your pets inside during these extreme conditions.

❄️ What You Can Do for Outside Animals:

Bring them inside: If possible, keep your pets inside, even if just for the storm's duration.

Provide insulated shelters: If your animals must stay outside, make sure they have a well-insulated, windproof shelter with plenty of straw (NOT blankets or towels, as they can freeze).

Check their water: Frozen water can lead to dehydration, so ensure your pet has access to fresh water regularly.

Protect paws: If you can't bring them in, consider booties to protect their paws from ice and salt.

🏠 Indoor Pet Owners – How to Help Your Furry Friends:

Check their paws: After coming in from outside, check your pet's paws for ice accumulation or salt. This can cause irritation or injury if left untreated.

Keep them warm: Make sure they have a warm, cozy place to curl up, away from drafts and cold areas.

Limit outdoor time: Short walks only, and always keep a close eye on your pet for signs of cold stress.

Let's work together to keep all our furry friends safe, warm, and comfortable through this storm. Remember, animals are dependent on us for their safety, and they rely on us to make the right choices to protect them.

If you see an animal in distress during this storm, please contact us immediately during normal business hours (270.821.8965) or Central Dispatch afterhours (270.821.1720). Together, we can make sure every animal makes it through this winter storm safely. 🐶🐱

🐾 Fostering Saves Lives! Meet Bowser!🐾

This handsome 53 lb. terrier mix came to the shelter as a stray at the end of December in rough shape—underweight and battling skin issues. But thanks to care and treatment, Bowser has gained healthy weight, and his coat looks much better!

At about 3 years old, Bowser has been doing well with our kennel techs and was slowly learning to walk on a leash. While we don’t know much about his past, we’re confident he’ll make a wonderful companion for the right family!

Since moving into a foster home, Bowser has truly blossomed! His foster shares:

"In the short time I’ve had Bowser, he’s starting to show his true colors—it just shows what a little extra love can do! He’s very well-mannered, loves to cuddle, and would make an amazing travel buddy. He even comes to work with me! Let’s find this sweet boy his forever home."

As you can see from his pictures, Bowser
rides well in the car, loves cuddles, and is getting along (with supervision) with the other pets in the home. He is also gentle with his foster’s daughter. Fostering allows us to see the incredible potential our shelter guests have!

Great news! Bowser's adoption fee has been fully covered! He will be fully vetted and neutered before heading to his forever home.

If you’d like to meet Bowser, call the shelter at 270-821-8965 to schedule a meet and greet. Let’s find this sweet boy the loving home he deserves!

🐾 February is Spay & Neuter Awareness Month! 🐾

Shelters everywhere—including ours—are busting at the seams with homeless pets. The only way to stop this cycle is through spaying and neutering.

Why Spay/Neuter?
✅ Prevents overpopulation – Reduces the number of unwanted litters.
✅ Improves health – Lowers the risk of certain cancers and infections.
✅ Reduces behavior issues – Lessens roaming, aggression, and marking.
✅ Saves lives– Fewer animals in shelters means more get a second chance.

Our shelter is at capacity and needs to find loving "fur"ever homes for our current guests. Be part of the solution! If you have a pet that needs to be spayed/neutered, reach out to local resources and clinics.

Adopt, Foster, Donate, or Spread the Word—every action makes a difference! 🐶🐱

🐾 Meet Mateo! 🐾

This handsome boy has been at the shelter since September due to neglect, but despite his rough past, Mateo has come out on the other side as a true champ! ❤️

Mateo is about 1 1/2 years old and weighs a solid 56 lbs. He is very active and incredibly loving—if you’re looking for a dog who will play fetch all day long, he’s your guy! With his mix of Cattle Dog, Blue Heeler, and Retriever, he has a high drive and will need plenty of exercise and mental stimulation.

🏡 Mateo would do best as the only dog in the home. He does well with children, but due to his high energy, older kids may be a better match. He also needs an active family willing to work with him on his leash manners—he’s a strong puller and may do better on a harness.

If you’re ready to give Mateo the forever home he deserves, please call the shelter at 270-821-8965 to schedule a meet-and-greet!

Please share far and wide to help Mateo find his perfect family!💙
