Please note: Yes, the trees on the hospital property were cut down by PGE contractors.

Please also note: This is still private property. Please do not take the wood.

We will be watching the cameras for those that are taking things that do not belong to them. And yes, that includes you in the white RAV-4.

Thanks.

Hoping to find the owners for these two cuties - they were found by Powellton, are microchipped by the owner and phone number on file don't seem to match what we can find.

Again. A kitten dumped in a sealed box in front of the hospital again.

Please stop. That's 13 kittens and 1 mama that we've had to provide care for (which of course we will but that's not the point).

And whomever dumped this baby? We hope you enjoy the ringworm that this kitten is infested with.

Dr. Bremner and staff

05/13/2024

Well. The cat distribution system is at work. A beautiful mama and 6 gorgeous kittens left in a carrier outside the hospital - we found them this morning. We've been closed since Wednesday as Dr. Bremner, Rachel and Megan were at a continuing education event last week, so we hope they haven't been there very long.

We will make sure these kittens and mama get all the proper care they need and make sure they are adopted to good homes.

In the meantime, PLEASE don't dump kittens. Spay your female cats prior to 6 months of age, and keep them inside, especially if they aren't spayed. This is a completely preventable problem. We charge $220 for a cat spay. If you take a kitten into your household, make sure that you have the resources to take care of them.

We love the babies but we're not a rescue. We don't have charitable funds available to take care of them, so they will come out of all of our own pockets. We know that vet care can be a financial burden, but we can not keep the business going if we're providing free care. It's just not sustainable. So please - whether or not the person that's reading this is the one who dumped the mama and babies, please take care of your pets instead of dumping them and hoping for the best. This very well could've gone a very different way.

It is come to our attention that there may be some dangerous misinformation being spread, at least in one case, unfortunately by veterinary professionals, about Heartworm Disease.

Heartworm disease is a potentially life threatening parasitic infection that is transmitted by infected mosquitoes. The mosquito picks up a baby worm, known as microfilaria, by biting an infected dog. The microfilaria then after 10-14 days are infective, and when the mosquito then bites another dog or a cat, the microfilaria are deposited underneath the skin, and over a course of 5-7 months, the microfilaria go through a number of stages, eventually becoming adult worms of reproductive age. When these adult worms produce their own microfilaria, then the cycle continues.

The importance of year round heartworm prevention can not be understated. However, yearly, or in some cases twice yearly, heartworm testing is vitally important as well for several reasons.

One reason is that no medication is 100% effective. Think of it like birth control - it works really well almost all the time - but on rare occasion it doesn't. Another reason is that unfortunately compliance is also not always 100% - meaning that maybe you forgot to give your dog his or her heartworm pill this month, or gave it late, or your dog went outside immediately thereafter and threw the pill up. This give an opportunity for the microfilaria to "get through the cracks" in prevention. And yet another reason is that the heartworm prevention manufacturers guarantee their product - if you can show that you have been getting yearly heartworm tests for your dog, and that you have purchased an appropriate supply of a heartworm prevention from either your vet or an approved pharmacy, they will cover the costs of treatment. Treatment can be quite costly, plus the wear and tear of your dogs heart and lungs due to heartworm disease can be permanent.

We don't recommend yearly testing and prevention to make money - it would actually be much more profitable for us to treat a bunch of heartworm positive dogs. But we want to keep your pet healthy by PREVENTING heartworm disease, instead of TREATING heartworm disease.

Lastly, we don't make up these recommendations. These are the recommendations from the American Heartworm Society. They are the experts. We follow their recommendations. If your vet doesn't, I recommend asking why.

As many of you know, there is a new mobile vet on the Ridge. I have tried very hard to stay neutral on this topic as I believe very strongly that vet-bashing, especially by other vets, is deplorable.

However, when said mobile vet has the temerity to call and lecture me about one of MY patients that I rearranged my schedule to accommodate emergency surgery on, when she doesn’t have all the facts about the situation, I cannot let this stand.

So - I urge you - do your research. There are multiple complaints against this new mobile vet not only in California but in previous states she’s practiced in.

I care deeply about our community, my clients and their pets. That’s why I and my staff stayed here after the fire and during Covid while most of the other vets on the Ridge left. I don’t want any of you hurt or worse your pets hurt by someone who clearly feels they know better than me the needs of my patients.

Buyer beware.

See you all next year!

We know that there are a lot of concerns about the much publicized "new" respiratory disease of dogs. Please read this article for better information than you might find on the media.

For those of you not in the veterinary industry, this is National Veterinary Technician Week. We will be highlighting and celebrating a different team member each day this week.

To start, we'd like to recognize our RVT (registered veterinary technician), Rachel.

Rachel always strives to further her learning and knowledge in veterinary medicine to further help you and your pets.

Rachel started working for Magalia Pet Hospital in March 2016. Rachel attended Butte College and then continued on to a Veterinary Technician program with Yuba College and finally Penn Foster. Rachel became a Registered Veterinary Technician in 2023. She hopes to obtain a VTS and specialize in small animal dentistry. She was raised here on the Ridge and currently has a small farm of animals complete with dogs, cats, chickens and goats. She hopes one day to add a few donkeys and maybe even cows too. She loves the outdoors and spending time making memories with her husband and all their pets.

If there is anyone at Magalia Pet Hospital that you feel has gone out of their way to make you and your pet's lives better, please let them know. A kind word goes a long way.

Good morning Ridge!

We have staff today and are open for phone calls or appointments if you need care for your pets. Our parking lot is plowed but REALLY ICY so this afternoon may be better after the sun has a chance to thaw some of the ice.

We plan on being fully open and available for appointments tomorrow.

Dr. Bremner, Starr and Rachel

02/27/2023

Good afternoon!

As all of you on the ridge know, it’s been a snocopalypse. We tried to reach out to everyone that had appointments scheduled to let them know we would reschedule once things are a little more normalized.

We anticipate being closed tomorrow as well unless things clear up dramatically.

Please all be safe, stay dry and warm, and hopefully we’ll be back on Wednesday.

Dr. Bremner, Rachel and Starr

Well - we have good news and good news.

The first good news - our phones are actually working! So please feel free to call again on our main number - 877-1942 - but remember, if we don't pick it up or if it goes to voicemail, we're either busy with patients or with other clients. Please leave a message so we can call you back, instead of calling multiple times.

The second good news - we've decided that starting tomorrow, April 14th, to allow clients whose pets have appointments with Dr. Bremner into the building. Masks will be REQUIRED, so if you don't wish to wear a mask you're welcome to wait in your car. Only one person will be allowed in the building, so please don't bring the whole family. You will be required to sit on the bench in front of the exam room where your pet will be examined so you can speak with Dr. Bremner and observe the exam, but our exam rooms are not big enough to provide adequate social distancing. Technician appointments and medication refills will still be curbside only.

Thanks for understanding - our utmost concern is keeping our staff and clients healthy while still providing the best care we can for your pets.

We'll see you soon!

Dr. Bremner, Starr, Rachel and Erin

Good morning Magalia Pet Hospital family,

As some of you may have noticed our phones aren't working 😞☹️. We were able to receive a couple of phone calls yesterday but now nothing is working.

If you have urgent needs please email us at [email protected]. If you are picking up a medication that you have previously requested, please knock on our door and we can help you.

Please do not send any messages on FB messenger or reply to this post with comments as we will not be monitoring. Email instead to the email address above.

Thank you!

Dr. Bremner, Starr, Rachel and Erin

Dear Magalia Pet Hospital family,

Well it seems that our promised snow has arrived. We have elected to close today to keep everyone safe.

Those of you on the ridge - as you know - SNOW!!!!!

As it's continuing to come down, we've decided to close in the morning. We'll play if by ear in the afternoon, depending upon the amount of snow and how the roads are and if the wind has picked up more.

Please everyone be safe. If you had an appointment tomorrow, we apologize for the inconvenience and we'll contact you to reschedule.

Dear Magalia Pet Hospital family,

We have good news and bad news.

The good news is - we have new floors!

The bad news is - unfortunately the floors aren't quite ready for us to move stuff back in the hospital - especially heavy stuff. Therefore, we need to wait another night and start moving things in tomorrow.

Unfortunately that means we'll be busy moving stuff back in tomorrow and won't be open for business so we can be ready to jump back into it on Tuesday.

We also don't have access to our computer system until we can move it back in and won't be able to contact anyone to reschedule appointment and procedures until tomorrow morning. We'll make that our first priority!

We hope you enjoy your holiday if you have Martin Luther King, Jr. Day off.

We'll talk to you on Tuesday.
