FEEDING DRY PET FOOD OR TREATS? WHY YOU SHOULD BE ADDING THIS VEGETABLE TO THEIR DOGā€™S DIET! šŸ„•šŸ¶

Pet food companies all around the globe are struggling to control mold levelsšŸ§« in dry and canned pet food, with dozens of lawsuits developing over pet deaths.

Pets that eat food containing unsafe levels of these molds are highly susceptible to aflatoxin poisoning. These fungal toxins not only can cause organ damage and immune problems, consumption of aflatoxins has been associated with increased risk of developing liver cancer!

One easy way to counteract the harmful effects of aflatoxins is to feed apiaceous vegetables such as carrots.šŸ„• Carrots contain polyacetylenes, an unusual class of compounds that play an important role in detoxifying several cancer-causing substances, specifically these AFLATOXINS.

Eliminating aflatoxins from your dogā€™s body can be really difficult but serving up carrots is a great way to enhance the metabolism of these toxic compounds!

šŸ’šŸ»ā€ā™‚ļøHOW TO FEED: Raw or cooked, carrots make great training treats or can be minced and added in with your dogā€™s food. Chop carrots into a bite-size pieces appropriate for your dogā€™s size. The green leaves of carrots can also be fed for an added boost of antioxidants and nutrients.

šŸ‘‰Looking for more DIY fresh food ideas to improve your dog's bowl or snacks?! In our book The Forever Dog we give you several lists of other great foods to feed for various reasons (anti-inflammatory, antioxidants, cognition and more) plus how much to feed to ensure you keep your pupā€™s nutrition in balance. www.foreverdog.com

SO JUST HOW LONG DO YOUR PETā€™S SHOTS LAST?

Definitely longer than a year!

According to the top pet immunologist (aka vaccine expert) in the world, Dr. Ronald Schultz, Ph.D. ā€“ ā€œ Annual revaccination provides no benefit and may increase the risk for adverse reactions.ā€

What the heck are adverse reactions (or side effects)?

Well according to the other rock star pet immunologist Dr. Jean Dodds:

ā€œSide effects from dog vaccinations can occur anywhere from instantly up to several weeks or months later. Vaccines can even cause susceptibility to chronic diseases that appear much later in a dogā€™s life (Dodd, 2001).

Severe and fatal adverse reactions include:

ā€¢Susceptibility to infections.

ā€¢Neurological disorders and encephalitis.

ā€¢Aberrant behavior, including unprovoked aggression.

ā€¢Vaccines are linked to seizures. Distemper, parvovirus, rabies and, presumably, other vaccines have been linked with poly neuropathy, a nerve disease that involves inflammation of several nerves. (Dodds,2001)ā€

SO HOW LONG EXACTLY DOES YOUR PETā€™S VACCINE LAST?

According to the recommendations of the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA), (basically the dudes who set the standards for the vets): ā€œAmong healthy dogs, all commercially available [core] vaccines are expected to induce a sustained protective immune response lasting at least 5 yr. thereafterā€

Hereā€™s the breakdown of the core vaccines from Dr. Ronald Schultz:

Minimum Duration of Immunity for Canine Vaccines:

Distemper- 7 years by challenge
Parvovirus ā€“ 7 years by challenge
Adenovirus ā€“ 7 years by challenge
Canine rabies ā€“ 3 years by challenge

The moral of the story here, if you have no idea when your pet is due or has been vaccinated, then just run a titer test and this will confirm if you are due, rather than over-vaccinate your poor pet, setting the stage for future problems!

Whatā€™s a titer test?

A titer test (pronounced tight-errr) is a laboratory or in-house veterinary test measuring the existence and level of antibodies (necessary to fight off disease) in your petā€™s blood. Basically, itā€™s a test that will tell you whether or not you actually need to vaccinate your pet.

Itā€™s also super useful when making a decision about vaccinating a pet with an unknown vaccination history, or for determining if pets have received immunity from vaccination.

Vaccinating your pet is super important so donā€™t lose the overall message here: VACCINATE, JUST DONā€™T OVER-VACCINATE!

According to Dr. Dodds:

ā€œVaccines have achieved many important benefits for companion animals, and has saved more animals' lives than any other medical advance.ā€

"Heads Up Pet Parents if You're Feeding Your Pets Store-bought Jerky Treats!!āš ļø

( )

A new veterinary study published in the journal of TierƤrztliche Praxis found that dogs are still developing a kidney disorder called Fanconi-like syndrome when fed pet jerky treats.

Fanconi is a disorder of kidney function that results in excess excretion of glucose, electrolytes and amino acids in urine. Signs of the illness included decreased appetite, lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea, polydipsia and polyuria.

This new study isn't actually new news to veterinarians, in 2007, veterinarians became aware of Fanconi-like signs in multiple other dog breeds without a recognized genetic predisposition, and alerted the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, prompting an investigation. The chief suspect then was found to be commercial jerky treats.

As of today, the FDA has received approximately 5,200 complaints of illnesses associated with consumption of chickenšŸ—, duckšŸ¦†, or sweet potatošŸ  jerky treats. The reports involve more than 6,200 dogs, 26 cats, three people, and include more than 1,140 canine deaths." - Rodney Habib

If you want to learn more about potentially dangerous pet treats, and/or ingredients you should look out for when purchasing pet food (as well as all the DIY real food snacks your dogs will love), our new book called The Forever Dog is packed with surprising new science that will help your dog live healthier, happier, and longer. ATTENTION Pet Parents!

A chemical used in Milk-Bones, Olā€™Roy, Kibblesā€™n Bits, Hillā€™s Pet Food and other pet foods should no longer be considered safe for consumption due to concerns about its ability to damage DNA according to a new animal-model study.

According to the Environmental Working Group: ā€œA scientific panel created by the European Food Safety Authority found that titanium dioxide ā€œcan no longer be considered as safe when used as a food additive.ā€ The panel, citing concerns about titanium dioxideā€™s genotoxicity, or its ability to damage DNA, based its conclusion on a review of hundreds of scientific studies. EWG called on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to quickly consider whether to ban titanium dioxide from use in food."

A chemical that may damage our pet's DNA should not be fed to pets.

Titanium dioxide is on The Forever Dogā€™s Dirty Dozen list of additives you need to avoid in your pet food. www.ForeverDog.com/about
