Our Story

“Creating Opportunities for Meaningful, Personal, Academic and Social Success”

The COMPASS program was founded by a shared dream between two leaders in our district: Christine Northrup and Marissa Hill. Their idea was to create a cohesive program between the life skills classrooms at each level and create a vertical alignment of skills across buildings. They pulled together all the life skills teachers & therapists in the district over 1 school year to brainstorm, collaborate, and create a curriculum guide (and are still working on it!) to answer the question: “What should COMPASS look like at each grade level?” “How can we utilize the Bulldog Buddy system more?” and “What skills do students need when they graduate from our program at age 22?” And with that, the COMPASS program was officially founded in May 2019, with a ceremony at the high school.

All COMPASS staff believe in the idea of preparing students for their BEST independent (as much as possible) life they can have! Each student’s life will look different with varying levels of support. This means that every student’s classes, programs, and IEP will look different to meet their individualized needs. Inclusion with general education peers, and with Bulldog Buddies (and Puppy Pals in grade 5), will always remain a priority!

Students in the COMPASS program will receive instruction beyond the core academic areas (reading/writing, math, science, etc). We believe in the 4 life skills domains: independent living/domestic skills, community skills, social/leisure skills, and vocational skills. We believe in inclusion, least restrictive environment, and giving students choices. We believe our community is the best classroom. We believe in creating a loving environment where students feel encouraged and safe, to let their skills thrive!
