Just a little over half way through rifle season, but still lots of time left to bag that big buck...and don't forget the new holiday hunt from Dec 26-Jan 1st continues this year.

It has been a great year so far! Show us your trophies by posting your photos in the comments and don't forget Balmer's Taxidermy when you're ready to get that trophy mounted

Be sure to watch Fox-Fire Taxidermy's video on properly skinning a cape for mounting before heading out on that hunt.

Hope everyone had a successful morning! The afternoon looks great for enjoying the hunt. Be sure to remember Balmer’s Taxidermy when it comes time to memorialize that once in a lifetime trophy.

Remember, proper handling of the cape is key for a beautiful mount. Don’t wait to pick up the cape from the butcher with your meat and don’t let your trophy hang if you’re planning a mount. Get the cape to me as soon as possible for best results.

Congratulations to O.A.T. Staff member Nino Magro on this beautiful NY Buck! Good luck tomorrow to all the NY hunters on opening day of rifle season shoot straight!

Huge Congratulations to O.A.T. Pro Staff Nino Magro on putting down the biggest buck to ever come off the Magro Ranch!! This is what happens with years of managing a farm with the help of your neighbors!! If you let young bucks live you will shoot bigger deer and that's a FACT!! Talk to your neighbors and come to an agreement only shooting 8 or better so young bucks can reach full maturity. For the passed few years Nino has been very picky passing up many young deer and now he sits behind his PB a true 140' NY Ridge Runner and the biggest mountain buck to ever come off the Magro Ranch!! We Love the great outdoors and we are blessed to keep this tradition alive that our fathers have taught us!! Tomorrow Nino, Salvatore, Vinny Toti Stefano Pat Jimmy Ivan and Kaela head to the the same piece of woods our grandfathers hunted to feed their family's. We must keep our great hunting tradition alive. Make sure to bring someone hunting, make it fun for them and if it's there 1st buck if they get excited and want to shoot it thats what it's all about!! Good luck to all the NY hunters in the morning and God Bless!!

Good luck to all the NY bowhunters this weekend. Hope to see you soon with that once in a lifetime trophy! Don't trust your prize to anyone else. Balmer's is a full-time taxidermist and mounts close to 200 deer heads every year. Unlike many taxidermists who make you wait a year or more, Balmer's average turn-around time is only 4-6 months for fall whitetail.

NY bow season is less than a month away! Don’t forget to get out and scout.

Don't trust your trophy buck to just anyone. Balmer's Taxidermy mounts almost 200 deer every year and has over 35 years experience! Most mounts returned in 4-6 months. Take a look in our photo gallery for more award winning mounts.

Successful hunt? Congratulations! The next step is to properly skin and prepare your hide for mounting.

Deer hair begins to slip within hours of the kill, lowering the quality of the final mount. If you are having your deer professionally butchered, get it to your butcher right away and let them know you are having it mounted. They should return the head and cape to you within 24 hours (before the meat is finished) - please bring it up to me immediately.

I prefer fresh, unfrozen hides if you can get them to me right away and can keep them cool. If you must freeze it:
1.) You must remove all of the neck meat
2.) Cut off the back half of the hide, behind the rib cage
3.) Lay the head on the ground, spread out the remaining hide and roll up to the bottom of the head
4.) Place in freezer bag and freeze

Fix-Fire Taxidermy has a great video demonstrating how to skin a deep for a shoulder mount. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fgeagJoiF8g
