Well Dodger is eating all his food each feeding today. This is great news as yesterday he was only eating part of each meal. He buries his nose in the bucket and comes up with a mouthful. Reminds me of children eating their first piece of birthday cake. Food all over his face.

I think getting out in the arena and seeing his friends over the fence has helped his mood. He is looking much happier. Having to keep him muzzled so he does not try to eat any leaves or other things in the arena.

Dodger was happy to see me this morning and get his two gallons of soaked feed. He is going to be on soupy feed for the next three weeks so he can heal. Mix and soak his feed every 2-3 hours as that is what he is able to eat at one time. Can’t let the guy get an empty stomach and he certainly has a big stomach!!! Still not drinking water but getting plenty in his food for now. Dodger seems to be keeping his weight up which has been a concern for me. He is wanting to get out of the barn for some fresh air. Will try turning him out in the big arena for some sunshine after his breakfast for a couple hours. I will post some pictures later this morning.

Dodger is home!!
Francisco made the 91/2 round trip to the clinic to bring him home on Wednesday. He arrived back at the barn around 5:30pm. The trip was rough on Dodger so contacted Dr Griffin and scheduled him to come out first thing Thursday morning. He had another choke and cleared it. Dodgers throat is still quite sore and we are working closely to get rid of the inflammation.

It is now Friday morning and went out to check on him at 6am. Good news he is frisky and hungry eating his soupy food. He is such a character trying to give him his meds. Sticks his nose in the air shakes his head and won’t open his mouth when giving him a dose of meds. 🤪 I swear he would stick his tongue out at me if he could when he sees me coming with his medicine.

Prayers for him to continue to heal!! Thank you everyone for you support positive thoughts and prayers.

Another Dodger update.
Dr. Seahorn called me this morning and said Dodger did good over the weekend and no choking. He is still on antibiotics for pneumonia but is healing nicely. Dr. Seahorn also said he really liked Dodger and that he is “quite the character”. We hope to bring him home Wednesday if the weather cooperates. Dodger will have a followup checkup 3-4 weeks to check his progress. 😍

UPDATE FOR DODGER!!
Thank you to everyone who has donated toward Dodgers emergency care. I am overwhelmed at the response and pleased we have raised enough to cover his anticipated expenses. I will post updates on his progress from the veterinarian as I get them and his recovery once he gets home.

We need help with expenses for an emergency hospitalization for Dodger! On January 4th, Dodger experienced an episode of severe choke and the veterinarian had to be called. He choked every day for the next four days requiring the vet to make multiple visits. On Monday, Jan. 8th it was recommended by our vet that he go to a Kentucky Equine Hospital for treatment. On Tuesday he was transported to their clinic located in Simpsonville, KY which is 4 ½ hours away. It took until Friday for them to clear his system enough to locate an ulcer in tis throat, which was causing the chokes. He aspirated during this time, which caused pneumonia. Dodger will remain at the equine hospital until Jan. 17th at which time we hope he can return home.

Dodger is very important to our programs here at Giant City Stables. Not only does he provide trail rides to our guests, he also works for Specialized Equine Services. Dodger is a star in our therapeutic riding program and also participates in the veterans equine therapy group. He is well loved by all of our staff, guests, children, and the veterans to whom he provides services. He is invaluable because of the unique bond and connection he forms with riders. He has become a trusted partner and companion to the riders in our programs. Dodger is patient and quiet but has a very playful demeanor.

We desperately need support for Dodger’s emergency care. Currently we have incurred $3,700 in cost for his care here and at the clinic/hospital. We anticipate that the total cost will be in excess of $4500 by the time we bring him home on the 17th. Please use the donate link below to help with his emergency care. Every little bit helps.
