Very high energy field line Labrador learning how to walk nicely by my side. I'm not looking for a heel behavior, just a nice loose leash. He's learning that hanging out by my left side benefits him. Our equipment is the Sensible front-clip harness with a 15 ft long line. I like using a longer leash first starting out to prevent any pulling behavior and shorten the leash over time.

Please be cautious with sticks!
I know it sounds like weโre being a bit of a killjoy, but these are very common injuries. There are plenty of safe alternatives.

When used properly muzzles are fabulous tool for many dogs.
In my ideal world, every dog would be proactively trained to wear a basket muzzle, regardless of if they need to wear one during their lives or not.
What I don't like is when we abuse the safety that a muzzle provides.
A muzzle does not mean we can bring a fearful dog to the dog park to "socialize them" because now they can't bite the other dogs.
A muzzle does not mean we can push our dogs through a non-emergent medical procedure just to "get it done."
A muzzle does not mean we can let strangers approach and pet our dogs when they are not comfortable with these interactions.
A muzzle does not replace the need for a thoughtful training plan to address the emtional the reason behind why they're biting in the first place. Nor does it give us a green light to trample the dog's emotional well-being.
I fully encourage you to muzzle train your dog and utilize one should your dog be a bite risk.
Please don't neglect your management and training just because you've eliminated your dog's ability to bite.
Use a muzzle responsibly.

I donโt care if a dog does not want to say hi to strangers. I care if the dog can remain neutral and calm despite a trigger being present (me). A strong relationship with their handler is key. ๐

Our pets are susceptible to frostbite and hypothermia just like us. Some dog breeds are more tolerable of colder weather, but no pet should be left outside for long periods in below-freezing weather.
Keep them SAFE!

If youโre struggling โฆ
If I had to pick one thing I love most about Roo it would be her enthusiasm. She goes at most things in life with full 0-100 enthusiasm. Sheโs a move first, think later kind of girl.
It makes her so much fun to train, but itโs also the thing that can make her really difficult to train, because when thereโs emotions involved, her reactions can also go from 0-100 really quickly. Her amazing brain means she learns stuff FAST, but she learns the โbadโ stuff fast too.
Weโve had a lot of ups and downs on our journey so far. Thereโs been plenty of days where Iโve come home and cried after one of our sessions went t**s up. Itโs taken me a while to not be so embarrassed by this part of her. I mean, Iโm a dog trainer. Surely my dog is supposed to be โperfectly behavedโ?
Well, no sheโs not. She is a beautifully complex individual who has some big feelings about a lot of things and sheโs absolutely allowed to have them. Itโs just meant that iโve had to up skill pretty darn quickly to help Roo live in this world that she was not designed for.
A โwell trained dogโ, shouldnโt mean they never do anything โnaughtyโ. Most dog trainers have dogs with their share of issues, we maybe just donโt talk about it a lot (social media can be a pretty ruthless place). But I do wish weโd normalise โless than perfectโ dogs a little more so that you guys know youโre not alone.
Thereโs going to be some s**t days. Thereโs going to be some epic days.
If youโre going through a behaviour challenge or living with and loving a reactive dog, I want to say youโre doing great.
Donโt worry if you have days that go less than perfectly. Youโre doing your best and learning too. Progress is rarely linear and on those days youโre struggling, itโs important to look back at how far youโve come. Remind yourself of the wins and remember dog trainers have tough days too.
None of us are perfect and our dogs donโt have to be either. Keep going ๐พ๐

Sometimes we see people labelling their dogs as โjust stubbornโ or as โawkwardโ when the dogs seemingly ignore the humanโs cues. This is not fair and also inaccurate. Here we are going to look at reasons why a dog may not respond to a cue in the way their people want. They have not learned...

These are HUGE milestones for fear-aggressive dogs!
