I know many of you in rescue can relate. I’m not an emotional person — there’s usually no time for that, as I always say — but today I wanted to share my vulnerable side. We should all keep it real, because both people and animals need us.
Navigating the who, what, where, and when for dogs and families — and all the stories that come with them — can really take a toll sometimes.
I sent this text today:
Thank you — thank you for finding Gabby when she needed you most. Thank you for your honesty, which made me adore you even more. Thank you for being exactly what Bob and Dawn needed to know it was okay to let Gabby go.
I could go on and on, because I am just so forever grateful.
Here I am, taking in so many dogs whose owners have passed away or fallen very ill, and because of people like you, I’m reminded why I keep going. I honestly don’t cry much, but today has been emotional — from an 83-year-old and her daughter driving three hours to surrender her mom’s beloved dog after eight years together, because the mom is so ill… to getting this wonderful email from Bob just now.
It all just hit me — the love, the loss, and the kindness that keeps it all moving forward.
