Lusco Farms Rescue

Lusco Farms Rescue Lusco Farms is a non-profit organization dedicated to rescuing donkeys, horses, and occasionally other animals in need of a new home.

Situated in Southwest Iowa, we've been fortunate to assist animals from various places in finding loving homes. Consider adoption before purchasing a donkey from a breeder. There are thousands of donkeys in the US that need loving homes.

Rescue operations entail matching animals with suitable owners, a consideration that far exceeds simple placement. While transporting Maddy the donkey from Cedar Rapids area we were discussing her ideal owner. Madison Doyle, our veterinary technician, had offered to provide foster care (knowing she would fall in love with anything she cared for) this morning she met Maddy and it was love at first sight. I am sure Maddy has found her forever home with Madison Doyle. Thank you Madi for all you do - you and Dr. Aimee are amazing ❤️.

Ok all. It has been a very long time since we have been able to do any updates. This was all do to us moving our location. We had a lot of work to do to get our pastures and facility ready for all our animals we have. We have finally completed our move and will be back to giving updates. We have a rescue planned for this weekend so stay tuned as we will be back! Thank you all for all the support you give these animals!

Did you know donkeys form incredibly strong bonds with each other? 🐴❤️ They’re herd animals, and their deep trust in each other is what helps them feel safe and happy. That’s why we always recommend adopting donkeys in pairs or getting a buddy for a single donkey! If you’re considering adoption or already have one special donkey, think about the joy and comfort a friend can bring them.

Have questions about introducing a new donkey to your family? Drop them here—we and our amazing community of followers and fellow donkey owners are happy to help!

Epona Horse Rescue recently reached out to us about taking in two donkeys they received, and we gladly agreed since we’ve collaborated with them before.

Given today’s heat, we decided not to stress the donkeys with a live stream, but we’ll share a video soon.

One of the donkeys, Jenny (who we’ve nicknamed CoCo, since we already have a Jenny), appears to be a Poitou donkey, a large breed from France known for its long hair. Her hooves are in terrible condition, and she’s not very well-trained, but she’s already started warming up to us, and we’ve been able to brush her a bit.

The other donkey, Penny, is either an American Mammoth or a Mammoth cross. She’s sweet, halter-broke, but also has significant hoof issues.

We’ll give them a day or two to settle in, and then we’ll share some videos with you all.

Charlie update.
Dr. Aimee was out this week to check progress. We have been able to get all the dead flesh off and the infection under control. We used 2 rounds of 10 day powder antibiotics, and we have done 1 of 2 shots of antibiotics (2nd shot will happen Sunday.

Our next step is to try and get new flesh to grow over the bone that is exposed - approximately 2 inches. We are using baby diapers, an Rx wound cream, and then we wrap the diapers with vet wrap and a small amount of tape. We left the wrap on for 3 days, then took it off, water bathed the leg for 20 min, and reapplied the dressing. We are also treating Chalie for heaves.

This is the sweetest boy ever. One of my favorite things to do each morning and evening is to love on him while he eats and gets his leg treated. Thanks to Dr. Aimee and her staff for always being there! Ady is the biggest help and does a lot of the work (while I give him love). Ady also listens to Dr. Aimee and learns as much as she can. We are also feeding Charlie some extra calories in his senior food to put more weight on him.
One of our dear friends and neighbors has helped, and Kaeleen has become the runner always running for supplies or fly spray.
If anyone would like to donate supplies, we need size 4 or 5 diapers, vet wrap, medical tape, treats, molasses
Or you can donate online.
Some pictures are graphic.
