🐾 Puppy Training Series: Introducing Your Puppy to New Textures! 🐾

One of the most exciting parts of raising a puppy is helping them explore the world around them—and that includes all the different surfaces and textures they’ll encounter! Proper exposure to various textures during their critical socialization period helps your puppy build confidence and reduces fear in new environments.

✨ Why It’s Important
Introducing puppies to new textures early helps prevent anxiety later when they encounter unfamiliar surfaces, like slippery floors, gravel, or carpet.

🦴 How to Get Started
1️⃣ Start Small: Introduce safe textures like carpet, hardwood, tile, grass, gravel, or sand in your home or yard.
2️⃣ Make It Positive: Encourage exploration by sprinkling treats or using their favorite toy to guide them onto new surfaces. Praise them when they step onto something unfamiliar!
3️⃣ Go Slow: Avoid overwhelming your puppy by introducing only one or two textures per session. Let them explore at their own pace.
4️⃣ Incorporate Movement: Practice walking on these surfaces and include stairs, ramps, or uneven terrain to build balance and coordination.
5️⃣ Keep It Fun: End each session on a positive note with a treat, belly rub, or playtime!

🐶 Pro Tip: Always stay patient and use fear-free principles. If your puppy hesitates, don’t force them—use encouragement and positive reinforcement instead.

Shannon began her journey with us as a talented technician and has grown into her role as Assistant Hospital Director, helping to keep everything running smooth as silk. Her attention to detail, unmatched nursing skills, and incredible leadership make her an indispensable part of our team.

💡 Fun Facts About Shannon:

• She’s left-handed… but the ONLY thing she does lefty is write! (We think she’s secretly a righty 😉).

❄️ Baby, It’s Cold Outside: Keep Your Pets Safe This Winter! 🐾

As the winter chill sets in, we’re bundling up—and our pets need a little extra care, too! Cold weather can be tough on our furry friends, and it’s important to protect them from the risks of frostbite, hypothermia, and other chilly dangers. Here’s how to keep your pets safe, warm, and happy this season:

Winter Warnings Every Pet Parent Should Know

🐾 Frostbite & Hypothermia: Pets can feel the cold just like we do! Shivering, lethargy, or pale ears, tails, and paws could mean they’re too cold. If it’s too cold for you, it’s likely too cold for them!

🐾 Paw Problems: Ice and salt can crack and irritate paw pads. Make post-walk paw checks part of your routine—wipe them down and apply pet-safe balm to keep them soft and protected.

🐾 Antifreeze Alert: Antifreeze smells sweet but is highly toxic to pets. Store it safely, clean spills quickly, and opt for pet-friendly alternatives when possible.

🐾 Outdoor Safety: Outdoor pets need insulated shelters, fresh (unfrozen) water, and dry bedding. Even better, bring them inside to snuggle up when it’s freezing!

🐾 Car Care for Cats: Outdoor cats love to nap on car engines for warmth. Give your car hood a good knock before starting to make sure everyone’s safe.

🐾 Winter Walks: Bundle up your short-haired dogs in sweaters or coats for walks, and keep outings short on frigid days.

Cozy Companions = Happy Pets

🔥 Set up a warm, draft-free spot indoors for your pet to relax in comfort.
💧 Don’t forget fresh water! Cold, dry air can dehydrate your furry family members.
🐶 Extra blankets? Yes, please! Your pets will thank you for the snuggle-friendly layers.

Winter may be chilly, but with a little extra care, your pets can enjoy the season as much as you do! Share your own winter pet tips or post a photo of your cozy fur baby in the comments below. We’d love to see how your pets are staying warm!

Stay safe, stay warm, and don’t hesitate to reach out if you need us. 🐕🐾

🏃‍♂️🐾 Keep Those Golden Years Active: Exercise for Senior Pets 🐾🏃‍♀️

Just like us, senior pets benefit greatly from regular exercise! Maintaining an active lifestyle helps keep their bodies strong, their minds sharp, and their spirits happy. Here’s why it’s so important:

✨ Promotes Joint Health – Gentle, consistent movement can help reduce stiffness and manage arthritis pain.
✨ Supports a Healthy Weight – Preventing extra pounds reduces strain on aging joints and vital organs.
✨ Boosts Mental Stimulation – Walks, playtime, and exploring new environments keep senior pets mentally engaged.
✨ Improves Mood – Exercise releases endorphins, leaving your pet happier and more relaxed.

Tips for Senior Pet Exercise:
🐕 Dogs: Try short, frequent walks or low-impact play. Swimming is great for joint health!
🐈 Cats: Encourage movement with interactive toys, laser pointers, or vertical spaces for climbing.

Always tailor exercise to your pet’s specific needs and check with your veterinarian if you’re unsure how much activity is right for them.

🐾 What is Leptospirosis? Protect Your Pup! 🐾

Leptospirosis, or “Lepto,” is a serious bacterial infection that affects dogs—and it can spread to humans, too. Here’s what every dog owner needs to know about this disease and why vaccinating your puppy is so important:

✨ What is Lepto?
Leptospirosis is caused by bacteria found in contaminated water, soil, or even wildlife urine. It can lead to severe kidney or liver damage, and in some cases, it can be life-threatening.

✨ How Do Dogs Get It?
    •    Drinking from puddles, lakes, or streams.
    •    Contact with infected wildlife (like raccoons or rodents).
    •    Exposure to contaminated soil or water.

✨ Why Vaccinate Puppies?
    •    Protection: The Leptospirosis vaccine protects your puppy from multiple strains of the bacteria.
    •    Community Safety: Vaccinated dogs help reduce the spread of the disease to humans and other animals.
    •    Preventative Care: Lepto is preventable with vaccination—don’t let your puppy take the risk!

✨ Who’s at Risk?
All dogs are at risk, but it’s especially important for puppies and dogs that:
    •    Love exploring the outdoors.
    •    Live in areas with wildlife or standing water.
    •    Are social and frequently visit parks or doggy daycare.

Vaccinating your puppy against Lepto is a simple step to ensure their safety and health. 🐶💉

🐾 Let’s Talk About Feline Bartonella (aka Cat Scratch Disease) 🐾

Did you know your cat could carry a hidden bacterial infection called Bartonella? Often referred to as “Cat Scratch Disease,” this infection is more common than you might think, and it’s important for cat owners to be informed.

✨ What is Bartonella?
Bartonella is a bacteria that can infect cats and potentially be transmitted to humans through bites, scratches, or contact with infected fleas. Cats can carry this bacteria without showing symptoms, making regular check-ups essential.

✨ Signs in Cats
While many cats may appear healthy, some may show signs such as:
    •    Fever
    •    Lethargy
    •    Swollen lymph nodes
    •    Inflammatory conditions (like gingivitis or eye inflammation)

✨ How Do Cats Get It?
    •    Fleas: The most common way cats become infected.
    •    Ticks: These pests can also transmit Bartonella.
    •    Direct Transmission: Cats can pass the bacteria to each other through biting or scratching during play or fights.

✨ How to Test for Bartonella
Bartonella can be diagnosed with a simple blood test. If your cat is showing symptoms or has been exposed to fleas or ticks, talk to us about testing options.

✨ Prevention Tips
    •    Flea Control: Keep your cat on year-round flea prevention.
    •    Regular Vet Visits: Routine exams can help detect any potential issues early.
    •    Indoor Lifestyle: Keeping your cat indoors reduces exposure to fleas and ticks.

✨ Treatment
If your cat tests positive, treatment typically involves antibiotics prescribed by your veterinarian. It’s important to follow the full course of treatment to ensure the infection is resolved.

✨ Why It’s Important
Bartonella can be transmitted to humans, particularly through scratches or bites. Protect yourself and your family by ensuring your cat is healthy and free from fleas.

2️⃣ Use Positive Reinforcement: Reward calm behavior with treats, praise, or play. This creates a positive association with strangers.
3️⃣ Set the Scene: Introduce strangers in a calm, controlled environment to minimize stress.

We’re closed today and tomorrow, but rest assured we’re on standby for Santa’s reindeer.*

AHC has been certified an official “Santa’s E.L.V.E.S.” (Emergency Landing and Veterinary Expert System) location.

In the event that Santa’s reindeer team needs to make an unscheduled Christmas Eve stop for sled repairs, refueling, or veterinary care, staff at this clinic will be available to provide needed assistance and ensure a safe and on-time delivery of Santa’s cargo.

*have no fear: AHC is a distant backup for E.L.V.E.S., as Drs. Weissman, Kasparov, and Matthews are small animal vets.
