Good news for Kimba 🙌❤️
The results of the biopsy on fragments from his swollen jaw taken during his dental extractions came back. The pathology report was long! They were thorough - stating that twelve additional levels of the tissue blocks are examined and his case was reviewed with additional pathologists during a case rounds meeting.
Their finding - Reactive proliferating bone with periosteal fibroplasia, mild periodontal stromal proliferation and gingival hyperplasia 🤓
and that’s not all - “The samples show areas of proliferative and remodeled alveolar bone
most suggestive for alveolar bone expansion. There are also areas of mild periodontal stromal proliferation with rests of odontogenic
epithelium that are concerning for a concurrent benign peripheral odontogenic fibroma. It's possible all the samples represent an
ossifying peripheral odontogenic fibroma, however, I favor a peripheral odontogenic fibroma with alveolar bone expansion.” I know….what??? 🤯
Yeah…lots of medical stuff thats hard to understand and has something to do with probable reabsorption of teeth…but here is the bottom line and what we were hoping to hear:
THERE IS NO DEFINITIVE EVIDENCE OF A MALIGNANT PROCESS in the sections examined 🫶🐾❤️🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌
It was very important to have this biopsy - 50% of cases of mandibular swelling in cats is actually malignant (usually squamous cell carcinoma), so we are thrilled that Kimba was part of the “other 50%”.
Kimba was pretty anemic so he is continuing on iron supplements and B12 injections and is doing really well. He LOVES cat tv, LOVES to eat, is spending half his time with AvaGrace to give her some boldness and encouragement, and the other half with Little Momma, Ace, Grayson, Little Bear and that whole crew. Little Bear seems especially smitten with his big buddy and follows him around everywhere 😁
We will do repeat bloodwork next month to make sure his RBC and platelets are coming back up. He has a scheduled vet visit for a further Solensia injection, B12 injection and checkup in July 🤞🙏
Bottom line…don’t overlook these precious gems…the senior kitties. Kimba is 14 years old (not an estimate - his birthday is 4/26/2011 from his records). He needed his bad teeth dealt with, some meds to ease his achy joints, a little vitamin support to get him healthy again and he is up and running 🏃 By the way, the picture of him laying in the window shows the amazing result of his Solensia shot for osteoarthritis (a treatment several of our seniors get each month) - that window is about 6 1/2 feet off the ground so he had to jump up the cat tree - not an easy task for an arthritic senior…but that injection did the trick!!❤️❤️
