Good evening! We want to thank everyone who has participated in our raffle basket fundraiser for Clefton! Clefton is a very special kitten, whom we at MVS hold dear to our hearts. He was brought in for euthanasia after it was discovered that he had a congenital cleft palate (which is an opening in the roof of his mouth). One of our licensed technicians, who is avid in rescue, has taken on many severe medical cases over the years, giving animals like Clefton the intense care they need to get better and live a fulfilling life, and it just so happened for Clefton, that she was able and willing to take him on as her next complicated medical ‘project’. For the past 6 months, Clefton has been by her side (and ours!), as he is tube fed every 4 hours around the clock. In those past 6 months, many of our clients have had the pleasure of meeting Clefton, and would agree, he is absolutely worth fighting for! Cleft palates are rarely “fixed” in cats, due to their severity, and the intense care and attention required to keep them alive and well while they grow big enough for surgery. In the vast majority of cases (nearly all of them) euthanasia is elected for kittens born with this defect, as the odds of making it this far are slim, and if they do survive, the surgery comes with its own hurdles. That being said, due to the limited number of feline cleft repairs having been done, there aren’t very many surgeons who are experienced or comfortable with doing it. We were able to find a hospital on the west coast who has done this very surgery (and fairly recently) on a case eerily similar to Clefton’s, who has agreed to perform his cleft repair. Once the surgery is complete and he is fully recovered, Clefton should lead a normal life. While this is all exciting news, with everyone else counting down the days until his procedure, his foster mom, friends, and our staff have been working hard to raise funds to make sure he’s able to get this life saving surgery. They had almost raised enough money when he found himself very sick and in need of 24/7 hospitalization at a local ER, which drained nearly everything he had. Since that time, we have kicked things up a notch and created events, raffles, and worked even harder to spread the word, and once again, we are almost at our goal! Clefton and his foster mom leave this coming weekend to travel the 2,400 miles across the country, in this heroic group effort to give Clefton the future he deserves.

For the past few months, we have been rotating out baskets full of pet goodies and gift cards to help raise money to cover the cost of his surgery. If you haven’t gotten tickets yet, there is one more drawing to be held this coming Friday! Tickets are available at our front desk. If you can’t make it to our clinic, Clefton has a Venmo account available for digital purchase of tickets. All you have to do is let us know that you’ve sent money for the tickets, and we will fill them out for you, to be added to the drawing. đŸŽŸïž

In addition to Venmo, he also has a GoFundMe account, most of which was used to cover his ER bill (huge thank you to everyone who has donated to that!) Links to those accounts can be found in the comments below.

Some people have said it seems crazy to spend this much money on one kitten, but we want to remind everyone that when it comes to medicine, the only way we learn and grow is by ‘doing’. This surgery isn’t just for Clefton. It’s for every cleft palate animal born after him. It’s for the technicians and doctors who are now proficient in tube feeding. It’s for the education to many on how to manage esophageal tubes, not just for palate defects, but for broken jaws, neurologic deficits, and more. It’s for the refresher on dietary needs, from neonate, to kitten, to cat. It’s for hope, serving as a reminder that every animal deserves a chance, and comfort in knowing that there are people out there who are willing to give that to them.

We know Clefton’s team has gone above and beyond, both physically and emotionally, but none of that would have been possible without the army of people who have stepped up to help financially. It truly takes a village, and we want to thank everyone who has helped him along the way.

While we countdown the days until surgery, we also remember how many are behind us. Below are a *few* photos of Clefton’s journey thus far. His foster family has had a busy year, bringing him along for all of it, and leaving some seriously cute documentation of his vibrant life so far.

We’re in the home stretch now. You’ve got this, Clefton! đŸ’ȘđŸŒđŸ˜ș

Awesome news! Our clinic family has been blessed with a new veterinarian - Dr. Elizabeth Hall! This is her first week with us, but we can't wait for all of our clients to meet and get to know her. Please join us in giving her a warm welcome!

Dr. Hall is a native of Hanover, PA. She went to Delone Catholic High School and then to Franciscan University where she graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Biology and a Minor in Psychology. She completed her veterinary medicine studies in Tennessee at Lincoln Memorial University. Her favorite things in life are her Faith, her family, and of course animals. She also loves to write, sing, and play music on her guitar and flute and flip around on the trampoline, as she used to be an avid gymnast. She is married to her wonderful husband Seth and they have a 2 year-old daughter (Maggie) and a baby boy due in September. She also lives with her two dogs Millie and Boe (a calm Husky and a crazy Collie). Her special interests in veterinary medicine include behavior, internal medicine, and clinical pathology.

This Memorial Day – as we remember the brave men and women who died in service to our country – let us also remember the Military Working Dogs who gave their lives working tirelessly alongside our troops.

An estimated 4,000 canine service members were used during the Vietnam War to lead patrols in the jungle, and during the height of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, there were nearly 2,500 dogs on duty who saved countless lives by sniffing out explosive devices.

Military working dogs not only aid troops with their mission, but the dogs are family. Providing a refuge from the stress of war, the dogs look forward to games of fetch and help bring bit of normalcy to an otherwise abnormal existence for military members who find themselves far from home.

Thank you to the brave men, women, and animals who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. We salute all of you.

**SHARING**

A pet who needs a new home ---->

"This is Dewey, a standard Poodle. For the first five of his years of his life, he was a service dog for a disabled individual. When COVID hit, that individual could not take care of him, so he was rehomed. He has lived with his new family for almost 4 years now, but he had some aggression issues (bites) when he accidentally got off leash, and is now being forced to leave the condo where they must live. His owners are absolutely devastated, but need to find him a new home in the next 4 weeks. Per his owner, he is fixed and up to date on all shots. Contact Gilda @ 410-227-7875 if you have questions."

If you’ve been to Manchester Vet within the last few months, chances are you may have seen or met Clefton! Clefton was scheduled to be euthanized back in the end of November, after he was born with a cleft palate. Though the survival rate of cats with cleft palates is less than 1%, one of our RVTs offered to foster him, in hopes of giving him a chance. Much to our surprise, Clefton had a will to live, and is now 4 months old! He is strictly tube fed, meaning every bit of food and water he gets has to go directly into his stomach through a tube passed down his esophagus, 5 times a day. As you can imagine, his age makes that increasingly difficult, due to his growing size and incoming adult teeth. The only way for Clefton to continue thriving is through surgery to repair the cleft. Because cats rarely make it to adulthood with this defect, the repair has to be done by a very specific specialist, who is out of state. This procedure is a multi-step process, and comes with a significant price tag. One of the ways his team is raising the money for Clefton’s surgery is through fundraisers, one of which we are actively helping with. There will be several baskets in our waiting room from now until April 17th. You can buy tickets to be put in either the “dog” or “cat” drawings, to be entered to win a themed basket. Each basket comes with an assortment of animal themed items, as well as a gift card to a local business. In addition to these baskets, they have many others that will be raffled off through online fundraisers, or through other events to sponsor Clefton. If you’d like to get raffle tickets, or to leave a donation for Clefton’s surgery, there are collection bins at our front desk, and the link to his gofundme is posted in the comments.

Helping us meet his goal for surgery isn’t just helping Clefton, it’s also providing education on a rarely seen congenital defect, and paving the way for future animals.

Please help us, help Clefton đŸ˜ș

Less than 3 weeks until Easter! While Easter is a wonderful time of year, and our pets can get outside and enjoy the sun after a cold winter, our pet parents should remind themselves of the dangers that exist around this season. And don't forget, if your pet does get into something and you're not sure if it was a safe exposure or not, call our office or the ASPCA Pet Poison Control Center (available 24-7-365) at (888) 426-4435.

The number one goal of most cats is to never let their family know they are feeling sick. If any of your feline family members are due or overdue for their exams, give us a call and bring them in! We would be glad to check them out. We even have discounted survey bloodwork panels to help screen your kitties for hidden conditions that may be serious and affecting their health.

For those in our community who aren't already aware, Hailey is safe! She was found yesterday evening, a bit north of Mt. Ventus Road. We are so happy she is home with her family. We checked Hailey out at the clinic this morning, and she is doing well given her most recent adventure. We thank her Mom who made the actual final catch, Monty and his family who did an amazing job tracking Hailey, our technician Val who worked daily with both Hailey's Mom and Monty, the rest of our staff and clients for all of their support, and the members of our community were the eyes and ears for the search.

01/30/2024

We have had some promising news about recent new Hailey sightings this week!

We want to thank everyone for all of their continued vigilance, but also remind everyone that if you do have a sighting, please send that information immediately to to 240-529-8863.

Chasing after or calling out for Hailey, or making posts about sightings on social media have the potential to flood an area with people, obliterate trails, camouflage scents, and scare Hailey further away.

We all thank the public for working with us and Hailey's family to get her back as soon as possible.

The team of trappers and trackers are getting close. Again, please call any and all sightings to 240-529-8863, and thank you.

01/28/2024

Dr. Baker and Dr. Forshey (Hailey's owner) are working together, along with professional trackers, to help locate Hailey. With that being said, we know that a lot of people in the community want to help, and helping search is greatly appreciated when it comes to getting additional sightings. With loose dogs that are scared, though, it is a bit different than looking for a missing person. There are certain things that are helpful while looking, and others that are not. We strongly encourage everyone to keep their eyes open and watch for any possible sightings. But if you think you see Hailey, please note the address, area, and what Hailey was doing when you saw her. This will help everyone to better locate the area in which she is. Please do not get out of your vehicle, or try to call out to her. Please do not go looking through the woods or fields either, as this may make her more stressed, and even possibly cause her to leave the area she is in. Please see the attached images for more information about dealing with loose dogs in general.

Please contact the trackers below if you have any sightings of Hailey, since we have all engaged them to work towards mapping out where Hailey has been. Thanks again to everyone who has helped, and we encourage everyone to stay focused on Hailey, and only Hailey.

We are moving our updates to a new post here, since they had gotten buried in the original announcement about Hailey.

We have seen several heartfelt messages of support from the community over the last few days, and we truly appreciate them, but we urge everyone not to forget that the most important aspect of this situation is getting Hailey back with her family.

We have been out on the roads today nearest her most recent sighting, and we encourage everyone to keep up their efforts, keep their eyes out, and help in any way they can. We sincerely hope Hailey gets back to her family as soon as possible.
