Day 5 since Kardi’s injury and this is what we are looking like! Stitches had to be cut out today because we have such good tissue growth. Minor swelling left around the hock (mainly due to limited turnout & movement) but super happy with the progress 😊

Onto the fun part of the wound car management! Kardi’s daily program looks a little like this…

14 SMZ pills 2 x a day
Water therapy minimum 15 minutes
Flushing with saline
Scrubbing with a gauze pad (gently enough to not disturb the stitches but enough to make the tissue bleed) this to me really is key to keep the bad tissue at bay & the good tissue coming!
Cold laser minimum 15 minutes
Gauze with some local honey/sugar mixture & wrap with vet wrap just to keep the mixture covered and in place. I wrap her with standing wraps to help keep that lymphatic system working ! She is stalled over night but allowed to go in a small runout during the day right now.

My personal horse kardi was found Tuesday morning with good puncture on her right hock. Due to the location of the wound and the presentation of her lameness i felt it was best to get a set of X-rays to make sure the joint was not involved in the injury. Fortunately the joint is not involved and it is just a good puncture. We stitched a portion of the cut to help it close easier but also so it can still be flushed & allow drainage. Now the fun part begins !!
