UPDATE FOR NEW RESPIRATORY VIRUS
There was an update with experts the from across the country about this “new” virus. Essentially the update is despite all the new testing they have NOT found a new virus. All the data points to just localized shifts in the viruses that are already out there. One of the take aways for us in particular is that Missouri has not seen a large increase at this time. Everyone wants to know if it’s safe to go to the dog park/groomer etc. Based on the most recent data there is no more risk now than there was in the past. Anytime there are dogs congregating there is always risk of viruses spreading but making sure your vaccines are current can help protect your pets. Feel free to watch the video, they do a nice job of explaining how a lot of this works in a way that is accessible to anyone. If you have any questions don’t hesitate to give us a call.

Trupanion recently convened a panel of global veterinary authorities and thought leaders to discuss this timely topic.

There has been a recent online rumor that is circulating that Purina ProPlan is killing dogs. This rumor is false and the people that began the rumor have admitted they had no facts. However, their admission of lying has not gotten nearly as much attention as the original posting. Please take a look at this info from Purina. We continue to recommend the Purina ProPlan diets as a great quality diet as well as Hills Science Diet and Royal Canin foods. If you have any questions please feel free to reach out; we are always happy to dispel online rumors.

There was a panel of experts last night that talked about the new respiratory illness that is circulating around. It was mostly targeted towards veterinary professionals but they knew that pet owners were interested as well so they did a great job of taking some time to explain some things about respiratory disease in dogs in general and answer a lot of the questions that people had. Take a look if you want to hear the most up to date info available.

11/28/2023

There have been lots of media reports about a new respiratory virus circulating around the country.

Here is the short version:

At this time not much is known about the illness and so, unfortunately, recommendations are hard to make until we know more. If your pet is coughing please call us so we can evaluate the situation and determine if your pet should be seen. There have been no confirmed cases in Missouri at this time but there have been a few suspect cases.

Here is the long version:

We aren't even certain it is a virus but that seems most likely given the cases that have been seen so far. This illness seems to come in one of three forms: a rapid, often fatal, pneumonia (the least common form), chronic pneumonia that doesn't respond well to antibiotics but does eventually resolve, or just a severe cough that doesn't go away for several months. We are hopeful that the multiple laboratories working on this around the country will be able to identify this illness so we can then develop appropriate testing for it to help separate the dogs with common kennel cough from the ones with more severe infections. The media historically does a poor job of covering emerging veterinary diseases and tends to focus on the small number of pets that are dying in an effort to grab headlines. There has not been a massive number of dogs dying from this to date. As such we are not recommending avoiding kennels/daycares at this time but if an outbreak occurs in St. Louis that might change. We are always happy to help answer questions, please don't hesitate to reach out with questions and we will do our best to answer with the information we currently have available. We will do our best to keep you updated as more information becomes available.
