SASHA Farm Animal Sanctuary

SASHA Farm Animal Sanctuary Message us on Facebook or email us at [email protected] Located in Manchester, Michigan, SASHA Farm is the Midwest's largest farm animal sanctuary.

At our shelter, not only do we provide food, water, shelter, and veterinary care, we also give the animal residents affection, social interaction with others of their own species, and a sense of security. The sanctuary currently shelters over 150 animals, each with their own story to tell. Some were dumped and discarded, some were left to die. They have come from unhappy circumstances, often mistreated or neglected, but now have a safe, permanent home at SASHA Farm.

Meet the Animals Monday: Lazarus the Brave 🤍

In 2021, Lazarus was just a number. Lonely, emaciated, and defeated, he stood in the corner of a sale barn waiting for his turn to be auctioned off to the highest bidder. As he slumped further into defeat, he became a joke among the audience, due to his pitiful and painful deteriorating condition.

However, fate had a different plan for Laz. Fortunately, two members of SASHA Farm happened to be visiting this particular sale barn for educational purposes. As they scanned the pen, they immediately noticed this lone sheep, sunken, with a red “X” on his back, and they quickly took action.

Lazarus made his first trip to SASHA Farm that afternoon to receive urgent medical care from our veterinarians and staff. Sadly, after an extensive checkup, he was given a 10% chance to live through the evening. However, Laz didn’t give up. He survived his first night and was promptly taken to MSU for substantial treatment.

After a couple weeks at MSU, receiving medical care and slowly recovering, he made his way back to SASHA. With the attentive care given by the animal care team, along with the immense amount of love and support from our SASHA community, he flourished. Laz finally became part of a herd, had endless amounts of hay, enjoyed zoomies around the yard, soaked up the sun in the pasture, and received so many smooches and boops.

We are happy to say that Lazarus, almost four years later, is still strong, healthy, safe, and an adored member of our animal family. He’s truly a survivor and is an ambassador for all animals and our mission.

We hope to see more animals given a second chance at life like Laz did. They all deserve better and we are the ones that can make a difference.

⭐️ SASHA Farm Legacy Fund ⭐️

The start of 2025 has been a challenge here at SASHA Farm. We write to you with heavy hearts that one of our beloved pigs, June Carter Cash, passed away peacefully in the arms of her caretakers this past Friday.

June's story: At just a few months old, June was rescued from an early death when she was awarded as a raffle prize at a local car show. The raffle winners, Chris and Jenny, couldn't believe their eyes when they were told they'd won a live pig ready for slaughter. This was a defining moment for Chris and Jenny. As they looked into the eyes of this adorable (and sassy!) little pig, they couldn't bring themselves to do it. So, they got online and started looking for rescues instead. And behold! SASHA Farm Animal Sanctuary was right there waiting for them. The little pig was later named June and she would spend the next 9 years living in peace and comfort with other pig friends and people who loved her. Chris and Jenny would continue to check up on her over the years.

Some rescues shy away from posting about animal losses, but the new SASHA leadership has a different perspective. We want to honor our friends as much in death as in life. That is why we have created the new ⭐️SASHA Farm Legacy Fund⭐️. This fund gives supporters, like you, an opportunity to donate in honor of animals like June. This donation also helps us rescue more animals in similar cases of need.

We also invite you to read a tribute to June that one of our animal care members, Brece, wrote. Thank you for your ongoing support!

"Holding you in our arms and showering you with love and gratitude in your final moments will forever be an honor, June. I hope you felt how much we adore you. You were such a sweetheart.

You showed the world your personality - that you were a girl named June. You lived at 17901 Mahrle Rd. Your best friend was Sugar. You loved belly rubs and would lay down for anyone. You ate watermelon in the summer and pumpkin in the fall. You wagged your tail when you were happy. You looked people in the eye. You smiled.

You were you, and I wish more people could experience someone like you so their heart could be touched as well. Maybe then they, too, could be moved to tears at the thought of someone like you losing their life in a slaughterhouse. You were so much more. May your soul be free now. 🌈🙏"

Please consider donating in June's honor.

Working in the “animal care world” is amazing. Those of us lucky enough have the privilege of caring for so many incredible souls. Our mission is to provide those animals in need with a chance to live happy lives. However, with that immense joy comes a lot of heartache when those lives end.

It is very important to be prepared for end-of-life expenses. Therefore, we’ve created the SASHA Farm Legacy Fund as a tribute to those who have passed. This ongoing campaign will honor those we cared for, contribute to our medical planning, and help prepare for future loses.

We invite you to visit our social media accounts tomorrow to see our tribute to June, our beloved big pig matriarch, who crossed over the rainbow bridge last Friday. Her story, along with the many we will be sharing with you, will show how much your contributions mean to us and our animal residents.

Please consider supporting our cause. As always, thank you for your support. 🌈 🌉
