Armadillidium pulchellum is a small isopod capping out at 5mm that is extrordinarily brightly colored, with vivid red stripes inbetween segments. Like many other isopods, it's native to the British Isles.

I'm beginning to get suspicious that an isopodologist lived there with the amount of species identified in that range.

If you have asthma or sensitive lungs, I do recommend wearing a mask or respirator to protect yourself, because the way isopods live will invariably encourage mold and fungal growth.

The male saw stag beetle has offered us never ending entertainment

While some small baby isopods will be lost, I find this a very efficient method to remove frass while at the same time preserving the majority of the population. Please remember to freeze removed frass or substrate to prevent introducing to the environment! You can also make further use of the waste as fertilizer for plants.

This species is likely Lithobius microps, commonly called Stone Centipede, and it seemed like a shame to kill them so I collected them and now we have weird tiny pet centipedes now I guess.

I love the red an yellow isopods. They really stand out and are so beautiful.

Now for the long months-long wait for the adult beetles to emerge!

I tried so many times to get the male to pinch me but he wouldn't commit. Gotta love a man who knows his limits

Stone centipedes are a native centipede in our area, and can be a death sentence to an isopod culture if established. Somehow, a clutch of eggs snuck into this tub and I am one of the few unfortunate people with bragging rights to breeding stone centipedes 😭 They are partially predatory, partially detrivorous, and I find they love rotten wood ecspecially. I found hundreds of baby stone centipedes in a relatively expensive isopod tub, but luckily at this size the only thing they are eating are springtails and could not habe begun affecting the isopod population yet.
