I know we're all excited for Independence Day and the long holiday weekend π, PLEASE remember to make preparations now to keep your pet safe π€! Check your fence, lock your gates, speak with your vet for anxiety meds if necessary. !!HAVE UPDATED TAGS WITH YOUR CONTACT INFO ON YOUR PETS!! This is the worst holiday for pets, as so many get spooked by fireworks and break right through windows and gates π. Below are some tips to help you through the holiday, and consider the thunder vest or a DIY alternative for added calming effects on your dog π₯°. Also, please be aware of the heightened number of spooked pets as you're traveling this weekend, and use caution. Always secure a lost pet if possible!
*Keep your dog inside: Fireworks can be frightening, and even dogs who are usually comfortable outside may try to escape.
*Minimize visual stimulation: Close blinds and curtains to reduce what your dog can see.
*Provide enrichment: Keep your dog's mind busy with toys and treats, like those in puzzle toys.
*Play calming sounds: Try white noise, calming music, or TV.
*Create a safe space: Provide a quiet place like a crate, den, or bedroom away from the noise. You can also leave your dog's crate door open so they can seek safety without panicking and injuring themselves.
*Practice desensitization: Before the holiday, try to help your dog get used to firework sounds.
*Consider medication: Your vet can help you determine if anti-anxiety medications or calming supplements might help.
*Don't leave your dog alone: Anxious dogs shouldn't be left alone, so you can make plans to stay with them or hire a pet sitter.
