One day your pet will be old....

REMEMBER THESE FOUR THINGS.....

1) Sometimes “old dogs” don’t move because they are in pain. Find an integrative medicine veterinary specialist to help him feel his best. Acupuncture and herbs are life changing for these old, arthritic pets.

2) Your old guy or gal will require more time to do everyday activities. Go slow and be patient. You are his whole world and he is trying.

3) Feed him a balanced, moist diet. Work with a Certified Veterinary Food Therapist to pick the best diet for him.

4) When you take him on the wagon walk... Put some leaves and sticks in his wagon. He still loves to smell new smells and enjoy the sunshine on his face💜.

Gertie the Fire Dog 🚒 is a senior shelter dog who was adopted by the Bush Fire Department District 9.

She was the LAST dog left at an adoption event💔. When they went to load her back on the transport truck, everyone saw that her heart broke. The most wonderful human at the adoption event named Anne Brewer happened to be married to fire chief😎. So now… Gertie is a fire dog🫶🏻.

At VetNaturally, we donate our services to help Gertie as a give back to the community🤗. She was here this week for her monthly spa day to support her arthritis, skin, and overall happiness. (She has an important job keeping the firefighters calm and happy, especially on the hard days).

When I reflect on 9/11, I remember all the heroes who came together to save Americans. Many of them were four- legged🐕. These dogs were relentless in their rescue effort. They had burned pads (even through the protective boots), their eyes were red from the smoke and they were physically and emotionally exhausted. But they didn’t stop because they knew the mission was serious. The vet teams would make them take breaks and many of the dogs became visibly depressed because bodies weren’t being found alive.

I am proud to have served in the military. I am honored to have served as an Army vet who cared for the four legged heroes.

The American flag 🇺🇸 flies on the breath of all those who have given their lives for our freedom. To me it’s the ultimate symbol of hope, bravery and freedom. I hope every one of you will stand when the national anthem is played💜

Do you actually understand why canine rehab is VITAL for your dog?

Here are a few reasons:

1) As dogs age, they will lose strength and muscle mass💪🏻. This affects their daily activities in your home like climbing stairs and jumping on the sofa.

2) When the back legs get weak, the front legs work harder…this causes pain in the front limbs. But dogs don’t stop moving from this pain… they just hurt💔. And typically the owner has no idea.

3) Dogs are divinely built to move with ease in their gate. Over time, they can develop pain coping strategies that demand they move incorrectly. Have you ever seen an old dog with a “sexy walk”? That’s a dog using his hip muscles to move his legs😱 ( because his leg muscles have weakened)

Y’all, I could go on and on. With one simple evaluation from a certified rehab veterinarian, we can evaluate your pet and make a plan for their proper long term movement.

There are dangers and risk with ANY surgery, but we purposely and proactively work to minimize that risk. At VetNaturally, we require pre-anesthetic bloodwork to ensure all of our patients’ organ systems are functioning properly before any procedure.

Our doctors have close to 50 years combined experience on the table. At VetNaturally, we are able to diagnose, treat and operate in our state of the art facility.

We also have an RVT (Registered Veterinary Technician) who leads the anesthesia monitoring team, taking minute by minute assessments and making adjustments quickly and as necessary.

Once the surgery is over, we sit beside and visually monitor the patient for the next few hours. We apply calming essential oils to help them wake smoothly and massage, warm towels and calming acupuncture to reassure them that everything is ok.

A Sweet Reunion! Gracie Belle was first a patient of Dr. Jeff’s in 2014 at the East Jefferson Parish Animal Shelter. When she arrived to the shelter, she was unable to walk with her back legs and was put on the euthanasia list 💔Dr. Jeff stepped in to try and give her a second chance. It was then when Dr. Jeff was first introduced to acupuncture by Dr. George. Together, with needles, a crew of volunteers and some rehabilitation, Gracie regained full mobility.

Gracie was adopted and has been living her best life with her new Dad, Jon for the last 10 years. Just this week, Dr Jeff and Gracie Belle were reunited for an appointment to discuss helping keep Gracie strong and healthy in her golden years of life with acupuncture, herbs and immune boosting supplements. 🌿💜

This is Hannah! She is in our Canine Rehab Program and comes weekly for underwater treadmill (UWTM), Class IV cold laser (pic #2) and acupuncture to keep her moving like a champ 🥇in her golden years!

We use the UWTM to help with flexion and extension of the joints, to improve strength in older pets and to help with proprioception (placing the feet correctly). Plus, since the weather is so warm, the water is a comfortable place to cool off, exercise and we turn on the jets at the end🤩… this helps dogs relax after the workout and increase circulation👏🏻

Y’all wanna see a cool bladder stone? These are the pictures veterinarians text each other😂🐾

Normally we can resolve bladder stones without surgery, but this case was a little advanced because the stone was HUGE. It belonged to the sweetest little dachshund patient. The integrative approach was two fold…

Modern medicine -
1)surgery to remove this bad boy from the bladder
2)cold laser to help tissues heal quickly
3)advanced monitoring equipment to see the patient’s vitals and keep him warm throughout the procedure

Combined with

Happy National dog day to you, Bubba.

You hump every person you meet, you steal my workout mat on the regular, you have never heard of personal space, you fuss if anyone is eating and not sharing🫣 but you don’t have a mean bone in your body. You are 💯 about giving love. You are perfect. I hope one day you can hop fast enough to get a good look at the deer in our backyard. Until then you can just stand at the fence and wonder if you really did see anything as they vaporize😂
