Good morning, and we hope you had a wonderful Christmas! 🎄✨

As we head back into our regular routines, this is your friendly reminder that New Year’s Eve fireworks have already started popping up around town. Loud noises can be stressful for pets, so now is the time to prepare.

Please double-check doors, gates, and fences, make sure ID tags and microchip info are up to date, and if your pet needs anxiety medication or calming support, don’t wait until the last minute to reach out.

A little planning now can make a big difference in keeping your pets safe and comfortable as we ring in the New Year. 🐾✨

Is there anything more captivating than a dog's eyes? Did you know that some breeds are prone to having light eyes? Huskies, Alaskan Shepherds and Dalmatians often have a gene called the merle gene that can produce light blue, green or amber eyes. They can even have heterochromia which is two different colored eyes!

Thinking of getting a puppy for Christmas? 🎄🐶
Here are a few must-ask questions and things to consider before bringing home a new family member:

Before You Choose a Breeder:
• Research the breed’s health concerns & needs. Every breed has unique tendencies, medical risks, and care requirements — know these ahead of time.
• Ask about recommended health testing. Examples include hip and elbow certifications, cardiac testing, genetic panels, and OFA results.
• Verify the testing facility. Reputable breeders use certified veterinarians or recognized genetic labs.
• Ask to see where the puppies and parents are raised. Clean environment, socialization, and proper handling matter.
• Learn how often the mom is bred. Responsible breeders prioritize the mother’s health and recovery.
• Ask what care the puppies receive before going home. Vaccines, deworming, early socialization, vet checks, etc.
• Review health guarantees. Understand what’s covered and for how long.
• Ask about post-purchase requirements. Some breeders have spay/neuter contracts, return requirements, or breeding restrictions.

Red Flags 🚩
• They won’t let you see the mom, dad, or the facility.
• They want to meet in a parking lot to exchange the puppy.
• They discourage normal, vet-recommended vaccines or push misinformation.
• They cannot provide verifiable health testing or paperwork.
• Puppies seem overcrowded, unsocialized, or in poor conditions.

A Christmas puppy can be a wonderful gift, but choosing responsibly ensures a healthy, happy companion for years to come. ❤️🐾

We’re hoping for a Christmas miracle over here…

As you can see, this sweet boy has quite a large hole in his neck. He is a neighborhood stray living in an area where cats are often abandoned by their people. He is currently being cared for by a family that is unable to bring him inside due to severe allergy issues. We have cleaned the site and treated him with antibiotics, but he needs daily topical therapy to help the wound close.

Is anyone out there able to foster him to do his wound treatments? You would be provided with the necessary medications and we can send him with a bag of food to sweeten the deal. He is FIV positive, so it would be best to keep him separate from any other cats.

We know that this is a huge ask, but he’s such a charming little soul that we have to try.

Let’s Talk About the Fear Free Experience!

At Monroe Street Animal Hospital, your pet’s emotional well-being is just as important as their physical health. Both Dr. Paige and Dr. Alissa are trained in Fear Free techniques, and our entire team is committed to making every visit calm, comfortable, and positive.

We want pets to enjoy coming to see us, not approach the door with stress or worry. And if your pet has had a tough experience at a previous vet, don’t worry… we’re here to make things better.

What a Fear Free Visit Looks Like at Monroe Street:

⏰Time to settle in: We let your pet adjust to the room and explore before the exam begins.
🍪Treat-led trust building: Pets are welcome (and encouraged!) to enjoy treats throughout the visit to help create a positive association.
🤚Gentle handling: Lots of soft voices, slow movements, and your pet’s comfort always come first.
🤗Pets, snuggles & reassurance: We use affection and calm body language to build trust and reduce anxiety.
🐕Stress-reduction options: If your pet has had past fear or anxiety at the vet, we can prescribe safe, vet-approved calming medication before their appointment.
🐈Owner partnership: If your pet is nervous, call us before your appointment so we can personalize their visit and discuss helpful steps to make it easier.

Can you imagine telling your dog, “Let’s go to the vet!” and seeing her tail wag? Or pulling out your cat’s carrier and watching him come running? That’s what the Fear Free experience is all about.

Pet owners you don’t have to imagine it because the veterinary team at Monroe Street Animal Hospital is dedicated to reducing stress, fear, and anxiety at every step of your pet’s visit.

'Tis the season for allergies... for you and your pets. 🍂🐾

This time of year, environmental allergens like pollen, mold, and dust can trigger itchy, uncomfortable symptoms in our furry friends.

Here’s what to keep an eye on:
• Red, itchy, or smelly ears
• Excessive scratching or licking
• Dry, flaky, or irritated skin
• Hair loss or “hot spots”
• Frequent head shaking

If you notice any of these signs, your pet may be experiencing seasonal allergies, and early treatment can prevent bigger issues down the road.

Our team is here to help keep your pets comfortable all season long. Give us a call if you’re seeing symptoms or have questions about managing allergies at home.
