✨ Happy National Dog Date Night! ✨

Tonight is all about celebrating the special relationship you share with your four-legged bestie! Whether you’re braving the cold or staying cozy inside, here are some fun and winter-friendly ways to make your doggy date unforgettable:

🐾 Pup Cup Pit Stop – Swing by a local coffee shop that serves Pup Cups (whipped cream in a cup) and enjoy a warm drink while your pup indulges in a sweet treat.

🎶 Doggie Dance Party – Crank up your favorite tunes and have a dance-off with your pup! Move to the beat, add spins, twirls, and fun tricks—just enjoy the moment together. It’s a great way to burn energy, stay warm, and have a blast!

🐕 Sniffy Adventure Walk – If the weather’s nice, bundle up and take your dog on a scent-filled stroll through a park or trail. Let them lead the way and explore all the fresh winter scents!

🎬 Movie & Munchies Night – Pick a dog-themed movie, snuggle up, and share a special treat. Want to sneak in a little training? Reward your pup for staying quiet when dogs bark on screen!

🧠 Puzzle Playtime – Bring out the brain games! Use treat-dispensing toys or hide small bowls of their food around the house for a scavenger hunt. It’s a fun way to keep your dog entertained and engaged indoors.

🛍️ Shopping Spree – Take a trip to a pet store and let your pup pick out a new toy or treat. It’s their version of a shopping day out!

🍦 Frozen Fun – Feeling adventurous? Head to a dog-friendly spot for some pup-safe ice cream—because who says you can’t enjoy a cold treat in winter?

🍽️ Dinner Date – Find a dog-friendly patio with heaters and enjoy a meal together. Your pup will love being included in the experience!

Make It a Tradition! – If your dog lights up with joy tonight (and we know they will), why not make Doggie Date Night a weekly event? You can make Date Night any day you choose. Your pup will love the quality time spent together.

Mary’s life has always revolved around dogs—one, two… okay, sometimes many more! Whether training, competing, or just sharing her home with a pack of pups, she’s never been without one.

She’s got a dog-nerd résumé longer than a Great Dane’s tail, packed with credentials that sound like alphabet soup: CPDT-KSA, KPA CTP, CTDI, FFCP… and that’s just the beginning. Mary’s been training dogs longer than some of us have been alive, competing in conformation, obedience, and various dog sports, teaching classes, and even leading a 4-H dog program just for fun. She’s especially passionate about rehabilitating dogs with behavioral challenges and training service dogs to perform life-changing tasks.

If Mary’s career were a dog, it’d be high-drive, focused, fast, and always on point. She built a 30-year career in marketing, working for several large companies in Phoenix and Seattle, and launching one of the first virtual ad agencies—back when remote work was still a futuristic concept. But her true passion has always been dog training, and after moving back to her hometown, Manhattan, in 2010, she finally made that dream a reality. Now she wears all the hats—admin, teacher, marketing guru, boss, pooper scooper… but her favorite? Helping dogs and their people succeed.

And just in case you thought she had any self-restraint when it comes to dogs… five years ago, she took things to the next level by adopting a rare breed from Japan—a Hokkaido Ken. Was it a logical decision? Probably not. But logic went out the window the moment she saw her puppy climb out of an exercise pen at 12 weeks old. Challenge accepted! Since then, she has dragged a few other unsuspecting souls into the Hokka fan club. Now, she and her fellow Hokkaido Ken converts are smitten with these stubborn, brilliant, talkative, and utterly unique dogs. Unfortunately, the breed is at risk of disappearing within our lifetime—but if anyone is determined to keep their legacy alive, it’s Mary.

They’re not a dog for everyone—There’s probably a reason these little bear hunters are nearly extinct! But Mary finds them endlessly fascinating and loves chatting about them. If you’re curious, please ask! Her headstrong, clever, and endlessly opinionated Hokkaido Ken will be happy to chime in.

If you’ve ever emailed MuttSchool, called to schedule an appointment, or had a question about training, chances are Abby’s been the friendly force keeping everything running smoothly. As our Client Happiness Coordinator, she makes sure every client—both two- and four-legged—gets the attention they deserve!

But Abby doesn’t just work behind the scenes—she’s in the training ring, too! On weekday mornings, she’s up bright and early, welcoming DaySchool dogs and helping them settle in for a great day of learning and fun.

Abby recently completed the Dog Obedience Instructor course through Animal Behavior College, finishing her ABC externship under the mentorship of MuttSchool’s CPDT-certified trainers. She has been assisting with group classes on Sundays and has even taken the lead in teaching a few! Passionate about animal behavior, she’s eager to continue learning and growing in the field.

When she’s not training dogs or coordinating schedules, Abby is working toward therapy dog certification with her own Bernese Mountain Dog—a giant, lovable fluffball with a heart as big as his paws.

From training to client care, Abby does it all with enthusiasm and a smile. We’re lucky to have her on the team!

🥜🐾 It’s National Peanut Butter Day – Let’s Pawty! 🐾🥜

Get ready to celebrate one of our dogs’ favorite flavors – peanut butter! Not only is it delicious, but its uses are also a great way to keep your dog entertained. Here are some fun, dog-friendly ways to enjoy National Peanut Butter Day:

🍌 Peanut Butter Kong Meal Replacement – Stuff a Kong with your dog's kibble that has been soaked in water. Top it off with a couple banana slices and a smear of peanut butter. Freeze this for an extra challenge that will keep your pup busy (and happy!).

🍪 DIY Peanut Butter Treats – Bake some simple dog biscuits with ingredients like oats, peanut butter, and pumpkin. There are so many yummy recipes out there! Please post your favorites in the comments below!

🎨 Lick Art Fun – Spread peanut butter thinly on a baking sheet or a lick mat and let your pup go to town. It’s a fun activity to keep them engaged, and it makes for adorable photos.

🦴 Peanut Butter Pup-cicles – Mix peanut butter with plain yogurt, spoon it into an ice cube tray, and freeze for a tasty treat. Perfect for a special snack any time of year!

⚠️ Always use peanut butter that’s xylitol-free (xylitol is toxic to dogs). Look for natural or unsweetened varieties to keep things healthy and safe.

Let’s be honest – your dog’s excitement over peanut butter is reason enough to celebrate! How are you treating your pup this National Peanut Butter Day? Share your photos, recipes and ideas in the comments!

It's Dress Up Your Pet Day!

Dressing up your dog can be adorable and fun, but as dog trainers, we want to share some tips to ensure it’s a pawsitive experience for your pet. Here’s the lowdown on the whys and why-nots of dressing up your pet:

🐶 The Whys:
Enrichment Fun: Some pets enjoy the attention and novelty of wearing a costume, especially if it’s paired with treats and praise.

Seasonal Comfort: On chilly days, sweaters or jackets can help keep short-haired dogs or seniors cozy.

Photo Fun: Who doesn’t love a great photo-op with a stylish pup? Just make sure your pet is comfortable and relaxed.

Preparation for Medical Needs: If your dog ever needs to wear a recovery suit for surgery or a cover for hot spots, being used to wearing clothes can reduce stress during an already challenging time.

🙅‍♂️ The Why-Nots:
Stress Signals: If your pet shows signs of discomfort, like pawing at the outfit, freezing, or excessive panting, it’s time to ditch the duds.

Safety First: Avoid outfits with dangling parts or tight fits that could cause choking or restrict movement.

Respect Boundaries: Not every pet enjoys wearing clothes. If your dog seems unhappy, respect their feelings and find other ways to celebrate.

👗 Tips for a Happy Dress-Up Day:
Keep it Simple: Start with lightweight, easy-to-wear accessories like bandanas or festive collars.

Positive Associations: Introduce costumes gradually and pair them with treats to make it a fun experience.

Short and Sweet: Limit costume time to a few minutes, especially if your pet isn’t used to it.

Remember, the goal is to have fun with your pet, not at their expense. Some dogs love strutting their stuff in style, while others would rather celebrate in their birthday suit—and that’s perfectly okay!

We’d love to see your dressed-up pet pics in the comments below!

Everyone knows Kate. For 8 years, She’s been the glue, sparkle, and cheer that hold MuttSchool together.

She is behind so much of what makes MuttSchool amazing. From hosting epic doggy events complete with handmade paper mâché props (yes, she does have a glue gun and knows how to use it) to setting up an outdoor play yard the hottest weeks of summer so the pups could have water play days without becoming mud magnets. Yep. Kate does it all.

Her background as a kindergarten teacher shines through in everything she touches—organized chaos, endless creativity, and the patience of a saint. Don’t be surprised if you catch her singing children's songs to the dogs to help them relax; it’s just one of her many secret superpowers.

She keeps the facility running smoothly, tackling maintenance and inventory like a pro, all while teaching group classes where she lovingly refers to puppies as her Prozac.

Kate’s energy, humor, and unstoppable passion for dogs make her unforgettable. If you’ve laughed at an event, marveled at a prop, or watched happy dogs enjoying DaySchool at MuttSchool, you’ve seen Kate’s magic at work.

GraceAnn is our go-to expert for all things dog sports, and her passion for training shines both in the classroom and in competition rings. This year has been packed with impressive accomplishments for GraceAnn and her incredible canine team!

Since her early days training a dog in 4-H, Salene Carlson has been racking up Fetching Accomplishments. She now regularly competes in AKC conformation with both miniature and standard poodles, as well as in Rally Obedience and Fast CAT with her poodles and golden retriever. Salene joined the MuttSchool team over a year ago as a kennel tech. Her talent and passion for dogs quickly earned her a promotion to Day Trainer. Before stepping into her role on our team, Salene was a dedicated client, bringing her dogs to our group classes and even showcasing their skills as part of our demo team at various events!

Salene recently leveled up her skills in a big way. She finished the "Dog Obedience Instructor" course through Animal Behavior College, completing her ABC externship under the mentorship of MuttSchool's CPDT-certified trainers.

We couldn’t be prouder of Salene and all she’s achieved. Please give her a big congratulations next time you see her!

Word on the street (or rather, the snowy Skyway Drive) is that the snow is piled high—right up to the top of the concrete road dividers! ❄️ While it’s a winter wonderland out there, it’s simply not safe to drive on those roads yet.

That means we’re declaring another Snow Day for tomorrow, Monday, 1/6. Stay warm, stay safe, and enjoy the extra snuggle time with your pups! 🐾

Meanwhile, certain northern breed dogs are out there living their best lives—mine have turned the backyard into a snow cave village and are pretty happy about it. 🐕❄️

Keep your eyes on this page or our website at www.muttschool.dog for updates on when it’s safe to resume DaySchool, classes, and lessons.

📷 Pics encouraged! Share your pup's snow day adventures in the comments!

❄️The weather outside is frightful, so for everyone's safety, we're postponing Saturday and Sunday private lessons and group classes to next week. ❄️ Don't worry—you won't lose any credits, and we'll make sure you’re back on track as soon as the roads are safe! ❄️

Meanwhile, enjoy some winter fun like sledding, making snow angels, or cozying up indoors next to a warm fire with a bowl of snow ice cream. Check out our website at https://muttschool.dog for the ultimate dog snow ice cream recipe—because why should humans have all the frozen fun? 🐾🍦
Stay safe, and give your pup an extra snuggle this weekend! 🐾

Our Story

  • Training a new puppy can be frustrating. So can changing the behavior of dogs who’s challenging habits have been reinforced for a while. In our community, canines can come to MuttSchool. While they’re here, they’ll be in the care of CCPDT certified professionals with experience in positive reinforcement training, behavior modification, canine enrichment and fitness.

  • MuttSchool’s instructors teach you along with your dog. You and your dog will establish a system of lifelong communication by building behaviors and strengthening skills. We teach so that it’s a fun, positive experience for both of you. We are dedicated to provide you with the tools you need to have a confident, well-mannered and happy canine.

  • We offer group classes, private in-home lessons, behavior modification, day training (where you drop off your dog in the morning and pick them up before 6pm and we do the training for you) and board and train. The end result? Wagging tails and happy families all around.
