Duke got a face-lift! English Bulldogs (among other breeds) can have a condition called entropion which causes their eyelids to roll in and the eyelashes irritate the corners and cause ulcers. We can fix it surgically by removing some skin under their eyes to return them to normal alignment. Because they have longer soft palates and small airways, they generally enjoy breathing easily through a tube!

PSA! There is parking lot construction that will be affecting access to the clinic for the next month or so. The frontage road to the north is being replaced now and when that is done, they will be replacing the red area just to the south of the clinic.

Not every "chew toy" available on the shelves is appropriate for dogs! Our BIG no-nos are antlers, bones and hooves. This poor 2 year old corgie chewed so hard on a hoof that she fractured both of her upper 1st premolars and had painful, exposed roots. (These are some of the biggest and hardest teeth to remove!) A good rule of thumb is the chewie needs to be flexible and be able to indent with a fingernail.

Thoughts from my heart regarding free vaccine clinics:
We are starting to see more and more of these "free" vaccine clinics popping up around us. My concern is the lack of a physical exam and communication with the people bringing their pets to these events. Yes, vaccines are important, but they are not "one size fits all." Sometimes we need to booster vaccines that have never been given before. Sometimes pets have really bad reactions to a vaccine, including anaphylaxis which, if not caught and treated quickly, can lead to death. Puppies and kittens need a series of vaccines. What happens if you need a copy of the vaccines for boarding or grooming and can't find it?
More important than the vaccine itself is the physical exam. The information gained from an exam tells us WAY more about the overall health of your pet. It catches so many issues that, when caught early, can be treated or managed. It gives us the opportunity to talk about concerns with behavior, training, products, even internet searches! Developing a relationship and trust with one another makes us a great team taking care of these furry family members! Vaccines may be the reason for the visit, but it is everything else that happens during the exam and the conversations that provide the true value!

Did you know snakes could get mites? We find them by using a piece of clear tape and try to get the little "buggers" to stick to it. Treatment can be difficult and take a long time - using (of all things) a large animal dewormer!

Goodness! Dental are so rewarding! Did you know that bacteria will work its way under the gumline and destroy the bone holding in the teeth? Did you also know that old dogs that get bad (or infected) teeth removed are so much happier they wag more and act like puppies again? It is SOOOO worth it!

A week ago we saved some kittens from their scheduled abortion. They were term at the time of their mama's spay, so it was good practice working as a team to do a c-section. They are all doing great and will be very well socialized when it comes time to find them homes in 8 weeks or so!
