🦠 Attention dog owners 🦠

We have recently been made aware of a canine infectious respiratory disease that has been circulating in the U.S. for a few months. We are not aware of any local cases, but wanted to share what information we have. For full details, please read the linked article.

This is very new information. We do not intend to cause panic, only to inform. Our current recommendation is to avoid unnecessary contact with other dogs (outside of your household) as much as possible until more information about this virus is available.

In summary, this does NOT appear to be a common canine respiratory virus. Despite testing, it has not yet been identified. This virus is causing mild to moderate cough lasting 6 - 8 weeks or chronic pneumonia. The worst outcomes have been rapid, acute pneumonia. This virus does NOT seem to be responding well (or at all) to antibiotic treatment. Dogs also are likely to be shedding the virus (contagious) prior to showing any symptoms/seeing a veterinarian.

The Oregon Department of Agriculture has received more than 200 case reports from veterinarians of a mysterious canine infectious respiratory disease since the middle of August.

HSLC's large dog kennels are full! Small kennels are full. We have dogs in overnight, police kennels. We are at maximum capacity. ‼️‼️‼️

We have had a vast amount of strays ... 6 in two days.... Dogs coming in from the dog warden...even with reclaims.... 🐾 😢😢😢. Returns too... So many surrenders waiting as well....🥺 We are trying to keep up.

We are in need of fosters and adopters to help us get dogs out and open up kennel space for other dogs in the community that are in need. We will continue to review applications but this takes time. ...Thank-you for your patience 🐾🐾

She is a young and spunky Shiba Inu. She was wearing a blue electric fence collar when she was found.
