A little blast and cast action today - more cast action than blast, but still a great day!

The fishing started this morning early and the girls had a lot of fun. I was kept busy taking fish off of hooks, rebaiting, and fixing lines, and passing snacks out to the kids - got to catch some fish too, ha!

The hunting was an impromptu call from while I was just finishing up hog chores - ran home and grabbed my vest, collars and young George. It was a nice day for a walk. No quail, but still good to get out and run dogs!

"She's kicking ass man! Nobody believes she's not a year old! I've been terrible about pictures and videos but we've been hunting a lot! After today she's had 62 birds shot over her. Should be more but it's my first season too haha her and I got asked to guide some veterans on a vet hunt that our pheasant club is putting on and the guy that runs the place still thinks I'm lying about how old she is haha he loves her and asked me for your info today cuz he likes her so much! I've had 3 different guys get your info from me after hunting with her this year!"

Solo hunt, one walk on our own land, the last day of the season: 3 roosters, pointed, shot, and retrieved. Well, the first one was repointed after it went down and I was able to grab it .. so I guess I retrieved one my self * wags tail.

The wife even convinced me to take Phil (the cocker) out today. Little bu**er sure likes it, 😂

My happinest hunting memory of 2024: My grandpa, "Pop," McCone was born in South Dakota. I watched an episode of featuring the city of Redfield - Pheasant Capital of the World ™️ and realized my grandfather's birthplace was only 8 miles away from there. It was the spark I needed to start digging - there is still land owned by cousins, and farmed by family. I just needed to look.

After 3 years of trying I was finally able to take a pheasant off of the McCone home farm. The family connection is restored and this bird is at the taxidermist, and the flight, shot, and retrieve are seared into my memory.

I am thankful to my dear friend that I met through the purchase of one of our pups, Redfield local, and one of the best dudes out there for taking us out to hunt when we visit. Man, you're one of the good ones. Thank you for falling into my life through our love of English Setters!

I also need to give a 'Thank You' to my good friend for holding off the trigger while I was hunting the family land in hopes of shooting one for myself. Selfless, encouraging, and supportive. He actually shot a McCone bird not 20 minutes later like it was not big deal, 😂

December unraveled drastically once I got home from this trip- loss of a sister, rollover accident, and drastically sick livestock. This memory is a bright spot.

2024 has been quite a year with many highs and a few lows. Losing my sister, Nancy, this holiday season was definitely the lowest, but showed us just how blessed we are with love and support from our family, friends, and community - it has been truly amazing.

Pro tip

Thank you, God for taking care of me. It's difficult to see you when we're not looking. I recognize this as your hand sending that young farmer to help us. My local buddy @mrweller78 took the dog trailer on his car trailer to the local welding shop. We packed everything into @wildfire_kennels suburban, 6 dogs and all our gear, and tore outta there. Dumped my dogs in my kennel, threw my crap out, and my wife and kids met me at the farm so we could all go see Nancy, who was 2 more hours away in Des Moines at Mercy One. The trailer is still in SD. We were able to get home. I was able to tell my sister goodbye. God works in mysterious ways.
