Typically, puppies require about 6 to 10 hours of sleep daily. Every puppy is different, with some needing up to 20 hours a day to maintain their high levels of energy. However, by 16 weeks, most breeds will be able to sleep throughout the night. Daytime napping is perfectly healthy for your growing baby dog and is nothing to be concerned about. Sleep is essential for healthy development, and creating a schedule will help your pupper get the right balance of sleep and play time. New dog? šŸ¶ We can't wait to meet your furry family member! Schedule their visit today at (231) 723-8998.

Did you know that there are differences between left- and right-sided congestive heart failure? Clinical signs of congestive heart failure (CHF) vary significantly depending on which side your dog has it. There are many causes of CHF in dogs, but the most common are mitral valve insufficiency and dilated cardiomyopathy. If you are noticing your dog has difficulty breathing, has persistent coughing, or tires out very easily, these may be signs your dog could have a heart condition. It is best to give us a call as soon as you can so that we can properly examine your pup and get them back to feeling their best! Call us at (231) 723-8998.

We all want our homes to smell nice and clean; however, as pet owners, we have to be extra careful that whatever we are using isnā€™t harmful to our fur babies. Incense is dangerous to cats as their sense of smell is 14 times stronger than that of humans and the smell can be too intense for them to handle. It also produces smoke, which can be bad for their respiratory system and increase the risk of your cat developing asthma. Opt for cat-friendly methods of keeping your house smelling fresh and clean by dusting frequently, using baking soda to absorb odors, having fragrant plants such as rosemary or sage, or simmering a pot of water with cinnamon sticks, apples, or vanilla. Stay current with your cats' healthcare needs and schedule their appointment by calling (231) 723-8998.

If you recently added a female puppy to your family, it's important to understand their heat cycles. Proestrus is the start of the heat period where your dogā€™s body is preparing to mate and averages about nine days. The estrus phase is the mating phase and usually lasts around 9 days, but can be as short as 3 or as long as 21 days. The diestrus phase occurs directly after the ā€œin heatā€ stage and lasts for about 2 months. Anestrus is the uterine repair phase, in which no sexual or hormonal behavior is present, and can last for anywhere from 90 to 150 days before the next proestrus stage begins.

Research concludes that cats cannot have autism; however, there are many behavioral similarities between special-needs cats and humans with autism. Since autism is focused on human behavior, cats cannot be diagnosed, but they sometimes exhibit autism spectrum traits. Examples include becoming obsessed with hunting or chasing certain things, enjoying their alone time, being easily overstimulated, easily spooked by noises or bright lights, and even being overwhelmed by too much attention. If you notice any strange behavior in your kitty, bring them in for a check-up with us so that we can identify if there are any issues affecting your catā€™s behavior. Give us a call at (231) 723-8998 to schedule an appointment.

Great news for canine travelers coming home from Canada! The proposed complicated hoops proposed to get back into the USA set to begin August 1 have been reduced considerably! Follow the link below to see the requirements to return to the USA: the dog must be 6 months of age or older, have a universal microchip implanted and the owner must fill out a form (found in the link). Be sure to bring your dog's rabies certificate with you to get into Canada. Happy travels :)

In a change of course, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says for dogs that have only been in dog rabies-free or low-risk countries in the past six months before U.S. entry, the CDC Dog Import Form is the only form that is needed, starting August 1.
