Ticks are upon us! Here is an article to give a quick read that includes some helpful tips on keeping your pets protected against exposure.
If your critters are in need of flea and tick preventative, you can always stop by during our office hours or visit our online pharmacy on our clinic webpage to stock up for the summer. Your pet must be up to date on an annual exam to receive any prescription medication
***Please also note that medication is just a preventative measure against flea and tick protection. Here at TVC, we recommend all pets be on a type of flea and tick preventative as well as receive a yearly lyme disease vaccine to protect against potential tick-borne diseases.

Rachel Barnhizer from Thompson Vet Clinic stopped in to first grade today to teach us about flying squirrels! Rachel is nursing a baby flying squirrel back to health that was found and brought into the clinic a few weeks ago.

Also visiting us was her dog, Pebbles! The first graders were very intrigued asking about how they fly, why they are nocturnal and how old the baby squirrel is. Thanks Rachel for stopping by!

Please give a warm welcome to Dr. Wesley Cochran!

We are excited to announce Dr. Wesley Cochran as part of our team. Dr. Cochran will be helping out at our clinic from time to time as he spends time at his camp here in the Upper Peninsula.

Dr. Cochran retired from his practice in Florida, April 2021 but misses veterinary medicine. He was raised on a farm in Michigan where he enjoyed the outdoor life, with a special interest in fly fishing. He received his undergraduate degree in Biology from Central Michigan University. His compassion for animals led him to Michigan State University, where he graduated with high honors, receiving his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree in 1978. Since then, he has been compassionately caring for generations of pets while founding and selling 2 successful practices in Michigan and 1 in Florida.

FLEAS & TICKS ARE OUT!

IMPORTANT THINGS TO REMEMBER
• Only use species specific products (cat for cat / dog for dog) if you have questions regarding other species please contact your primary veterinarian prior to applying products.
• Be sure to apply the appropriate weight range medication. Applying too small of a dose will not protect your pet. Applying too large of a dose could lead to an overdose.
• Good deals are not always the best deals. Be aware of online stores, as not all products are created equal. There are many places that put “fake” products out there that look similar to the original but not 100% the same (animal is different, wording is different, back is in a different language, etc.). By using a product like this you could cause harm to your pet.
• We do not mind if you purchase products from other sites, just be sure you are using a reputable site, as the way a product is stored/shipped can cause the product to not work as well as it normally would.
• Ticks can be active even in the winter when the ground temperatures are above 45 degrees Fahrenheit.

Is your pet feeling itchy? Have you noticed them scratching more than usual? The warmer months of spring and summer are prime time for seasonal allergies for people AND pets. It’s common to see dogs scratching more than usual this time of year. While this is often attributed to an allergy, your veterinarian can determine the specific cause and recommend a treatment plan to help relieve your itchy pet.

THIS JUST IN: USDA Issues Permit for Santa’s Reindeer to Enter the U.S.
Published: Dec 21, 2023
image of Santa's sleigh flying over a city

(Washington, D.C., December 21, 2023) – The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) today issued a transit permit to Mr. S. Nicholas Claus of the North Pole, a distributor with Gifts and Good Cheer, Inc. The permit will allow reindeer to enter and exit the United States between the hours of 6 p.m. on Dec. 24, 2023, and 6 a.m. on Dec. 25, 2023, local time, through or over any U.S. border port.

"USDA is delighted to grant Mr. Claus and his reindeer a special permit to enter the United States, ensuring a seamless journey for the joy they bring each holiday season," said Jenny Lester Moffitt, Under Secretary for Marketing and Regulatory Programs. "We extend a warm welcome to Mr. Claus and recognize the vital role of U.S. milk and cookies in fueling his festive flight."

Veterinary officials ensured the reindeer met all entry requirements before issuing the permit. Dr. Rosemary Sifford, USDA’s Chief Veterinary Officer, stated: “At a recent inspection, the reindeer were found to be healthy and able to prance and paw with each hoof.”

It was noted on the health certificate that one reindeer, Rudolph, has a minor physical anomaly. However, APHIS indicated that Rudolph’s red nose, while bright, was normal for him and not a concern.

APHIS regulates the movement of cervids, including reindeer, to protect the health of America’s livestock population. The permitting process provides assurance that only healthy animals enter the United States.

USDA has confirmed that the reindeer will arrive pulling a wooden sleigh with jingling bells attached, filled with brightly wrapped gifts. Port personnel will clean and disinfect the runners and underside of the sleigh at the time of entry. They will also conduct a short visual inspection of the reindeer. Mr. Claus has been asked to disinfect his boots and thoroughly wash his hands. These measures are intended to prevent the entry of any livestock diseases the team may encounter during deliveries to farms and houses around the world prior to entering the United States.

Mr. Claus also provided an advance list of what port personnel should expect upon their arrival. This includes a variety of food items, all of which come from approved locations and none of which pose a threat to U.S. animal or plant health.

“It’s important that Gifts and Good Cheer, Inc. take all the right steps and precautions to protect against the potential introduction of pests and diseases,” explained Mr. Claus. “I appreciate USDA’s assistance every year as we gear up for our big night.”

Whether you celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah, Bodhi Day, Noche Buena, Winter Solstice, Kwanzaa, Diwali, or other holidays during this time of year, USDA wishes you a happy and healthy season full of time-honored traditions and celebrations.
