Training Tip time:
Good timing with markers and good communication with your dog are so important when they're learning. What's a marker? It's a sound or word that let's the dog know they got it right and they're getting a reward. "Yes" and a clicker are very common markers. "Good", "Good boy" or "good girl" are ways to communicate to your dog that they're on the right track. They're also used to let the dog know they got it right once food/toy rewards are phased out. Petting, praise, or a quick game are great ways to help let your dog know they did great. Your body language is also an important communication tool. They mostly communicate with body language so our body language really matters when we're teaching them. And most importantly, have fun training!

First ever UP Pet Festival! Don't miss out!

We are so excited about UPPetFestival being this weekend! Not only do we have a booth, but we will be putting on demos along with many of our staff and their dogs being apart of the meet the breed presentations, like Mr. Legs here for the Corgi meet!🐾

UP Pet Festival happening June 8th 10-6 and June 9th 10-4 in the Miracle of Life Building at the UP State Fairgrounds! Admission $5, 12yrs and younger are free! Pets welcome with up to date vaccinations and a signed waiver at the gate!

Training tip: No is not enough information. You need to teach your dog what to do instead. Like sitting instead of jumping or quiet instead of barking. Reward the right behaviors and they'll get repeated. 😊

So thankful for our 4 dogs and that they walk nicely. This guy just happens to be extra special for me. 😊Especially grateful for my husband, family and friends that have been helping and reaching out while I'm working through these back issues. All the thoughts and prayers are very much appreciated. Hoping to be able to offer behavior and training consulting this summer. I sure miss helping and seeing all the furry faces.

Daisy May is in need of a new home. She was born on September 21, 2023. She is up to date on vaccines and is microchipped. She attended one of our basic manners courses and did very well. She is very friendly with people and other dogs. She's a mini golden-doodle. Please private message me if you're interested and I will get you in touch with her owners. She's a very sweet girl in need of a loving home.

Thank you to everyone for the thoughts and prayers. After some testing, it was agreed that dog handling for training was no longer an option. Please know that I'm available to help with questions and give advice. Once there is some improvement, I'm hoping to offer behavior and training consulting through in-home sessions, phone/video sessions and sessions at select locations. Did you know that dogs respond to our body language much more than they respond to our voice? That doesn't mean they can't learn verbal cues, but it does mean it easier to teach them hand signals and use your body language to communicate with them. Most of their communication is through body language so it makes sense, doesn't it? Guiding with your hands can be very helpful for them. Give it a try!

Congratulations to this great group of graduates! Benelli, Leo, Missy, Winter and their owners did an incredible job graduating our basic manners class. They learned how to teach their pups sit, down, come, stay, leave it, place, polite greetings, leash manners and some fun tricks. A shout out to Drake and his owner that weren't able to finish the course. Congratulations to this wonderful group of pups and owners!

A FREE Shelter Event for Kids!
Kids will learn how to safely interact with dogs, prevent bites and what to do if a strange dog approaches them. They will have the opportunity to practice how to safely pet a real puppy. We will also cover how kids can protect themselves if the situation arises.

What: Bite Prevention and Dog Safety for Kids Class

When: March 16 at 2:00PM

Where: First Baptist Church in the Multi-purpose room

Registration required – space is limited. For kids ages 4 -12 yrs. Must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.

Now that she has an understanding of leave it, we "set up" the countertop and started teaching her not to counter surf. She's off to an incredible start! Good girl Shadow!

Leave it! An essential tool for every dog to learn. Shadow did a great job learning leave it!

Nice day for a walk with Shadow at the Thompson State Fish Hatchery. She did a wonderful job practicing heel while we visited. Good girl!

We also practiced leash manners with more choices (more leash). Same guidelines apply. You pul and we either communicate with guidance through the leash or we stop walking. Mason did an awesome job!

So nice to see Mishka after an unexpected surgery. She is all healed up and ready to go! She did a fantastic job during her "refresher" session. Good girl!

This is where I start with every dog. This simple focus game helps dogs learn some self control with food and that focusing on us with eye contact gets rewarded. Shadow did a fantastic job learning to back away from the food and make eye contact. Such a good girl!

I have studied dog behavior and dog training for over 8 years. I have worked with 8 different professional trainers learning valuable techniques. I also train the dogs at the Eva Burrell Animal Shelter to help them find their forever homes.
