It’s time to bundle up, Texas!❄️☃️

MVS will be closed for all regular appointments on Thursday & Friday (1/9-1/10)…we will still be available for regular & emergency communication though!

For the safety of our doctors & technicians we are seeing emergency appointments on a case by case basis over the next few days. Please do still call us at “ext. 1” for emergencies!

As for our furry friends…they do pretty well in cold weather! But here are some things to keep in mind:
Dogs…
- Keep walks & potty breaks SHORT
- Use PET FRIENDLY salt only for de-icing
Cats…
- Keep indoor/outdoor cats INSIDE to the best of your ability
Horses…
- Allow 24/7 access to hay/forage
- Keep WATERPROOF blankets on
- Allow full access to shelter
- Regularly check & break frozen waters
- Monitor for shivering!
Goats…
- Allow full access to hay/forage
- Regularly check & break frozen waters
- Allow full access to shelter

Last week MVS tried their hand at our version of a “swine” tough mudder. Dr. T, MVS techs Jesse, Ki’era, Ally and The Homegrown School LLC ‘s very own, Hunter & AJ; all got down and dirty in the pig pen. A few days after some heavy Texas rain the team was facing some serious mud. In case you were wondering the term “slippery when wet” does in fact apply to pigs too. In true pig fashion Black Betty & Wilbur avoided containment at all costs. With the help of Hunter & AJ….our pig boards…and a little perseverance, we were able to get both pigs fully vaccinated!

On this giving Tuesday, MVS would like to share with you an incredible Non-Profit organization.

Austin Wildlife Rescue is dedicated to the rehabilitation and release of a wide range of orphaned, injured and sick animals. This year they have served over 9,600 animals…and counting! As I’m sure many of you know, MVS spends lots of time at the rehabilitation facility in Elgin assisting in fracture repairs, amputations, eye removals and so much more! We love being a part of those incredible life saving stories.

With thanksgiving right around the corner we want to remind you of the dangers that this holiday poses to our furry friends!

As Walter and Playdough are so kindly demonstrating…dogs (and sometimes cats) will eat EVERYTHING, even if it’s not edible. 🍫🦃🍎🥦

Here are a few things your dog CAN eat:
- Sweet Potatoes
- Apples
- Green Beans
- Dog Food;)

Here are a few things dogs CAN’T have:
- Chocolate
- COOKED meat bones (of any kind)
- Ham
- Alcoholic Beverages

💉 The literal “shot heard round the world”. It sounds like a horse received Flunixin or Banamine intramuscularly on an episode of last night? We would like to remind everyone that despite being labeled for intra-muscular use, horses should only ever receive this drug orally or intra-venously. Something that the folks at Yellowstone would need to be on the lookout for after this misplaced administration would be signs of gas and swelling under the neck or a painful injection site. Administering IM banamine to a horse can cause clostridial myositis and can lead to a serious infection that requires surgical and antibiotic intervention. Despite intervention, these infections can be fatal.

Our MVS team (including Walter and Playdoh) had the absolute best time at the Central Texas SPCA’s 22nd Annual Barktoberfest in Cedar Park this past weekend. 🐾🦴🐕‍🦺
We were able to meet some new furry friends and enjoy the beautiful weather while being part of a great cause…oh, & Playdoh spent the day trying out his costume options for Halloween. 🎃👻
