A VERY IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM OUR MEDICAL DIRECTOR:

To Our Valued EBAH Clients,

I’m sure most of you have heard of the potential threat that avian flu is posing to our pets and people. We would like to provide an update on the situation and what new precautions that East Brook is taking in response. Avian flu is a serious disease that is spread mostly through wild migratory birds. It most commonly will infect our domestic poultry and is usually a fatal disease. The disease is found throughout North America, and there was recently a confirmed case in poultry in New London county.

Recently, it has been found to infect cats, one of which has been confirmed to have gotten it from eating a commercial raw diet. The disease is fatal in the large majority of cats that contract it. It has so far not been proven that infected cats can infect people or dogs, although people have contracted it from poultry. It can be spread through aerosolized particles in breath, or bodily secretions such as saliva, f***s, or urine.

We are going to be taking extra precautions when seeing sick cats to lessen the chance of exposure to people and other cats. If your cat is showing any upper respiratory signs (sounds congested, is sneezing, has nasal discharge, etc.) or neurologic signs (seems wobbly, uncoordinated, is circling, etc.) then please remain in your car when you arrive at the hospital and give us a call to let us know you are here. We will make sure to have a separate non-cat room to bring you into and will be wearing gloves and masks. Please also let us know if your cat eats a raw diet, has exposure to poultry, or hunts wild birds as these can increase your cat’s risk of contracting avian flu.

If you yourself are not feeling well, please stay home and reschedule your appointment.

As of now, the disease does not readily spread from poultry to cats or people, but it has occurred. The concern is that mutations can make this more and more likely and make this disease pose a more serious threat. If you would like to limit your cat’s risk of contracting avian flu, the best thing to do is to keep them inside where they cannot hunt, and they are not coming into contact with domestic poultry or their waste. It is also best to not feed a raw diet or unpasteurized/raw milk.

Thank you,
-Cara Spagnoletti, DVM

Keeping your pet active during the colder months can be tricky, but maintaining a healthy weight is crucial for their overall wellness.

For our dog patients, we recommend indoor tug-of-war, indoor fetch, and interactive toys.

For our cat patients, additional cardboard boxes never hurt – along with laser pointers, birdwatch stations, and interactive toys.

What are some indoor activities your pet loves to engage with? Share with us in the comments!
