Now that we are heading into the snowy weather, here are some signs and areas you can look for if your fur baby is too cold.

(For small dog owners: It’s a bit difficult to say if your small dog is just shaking since they’re tiny or if they’re actually cold. Areas you can check for both small and large breed dogs: nose, ears, feet and tail.)

If their nose is ice cube cold, get them wrapped up into something warm.
Frostbite can happen since they keep their nose wet all the time.

If their ears are too cold, it will be a leading cause of ear infections and possibly hearing loss if not treated.

If the weather is wet and cold then be mindful about their feet. Rubber booties will help their paw pads from sticking to any ice and help them from their feet going numb from the cold.

If their tail is very stiff, cold or dry, wrap up their body urgently with blankets to warm them up.

Here are some reminders now that the weather is bone chilly:
👟Shorter Walks-Keep the walks short, remember you have to walk back home. Be aware of where you and your pet are walking to prevent slipping on ice.
🫧Avoid Frequent Bathing-Use dog and cat safe foam shampoo or wipes. Having a wet coat will only keep them cold.
🦴Do Not Overfeed Them-Due to shorter walks, less play time outside and being bundled in the blankets, your pet will pack on the pounds from over feeding. Be mindful as to how much you are feeding your pet.
🐱Prepare Warm Environments-This is the time where your pet wants to spend more time indoors but in some cases where they’re not able to, you should have shelter from the cold and windy. With the temperature dropping at night, they should have a bed and/or blankets that insulates the cold floor. Too much time lying on the cold ground can cause joint pain leading to joint problems and illnesses.
🐶Do Not Trim Their Fur-Their fur is their coat and trimming their coats can causing their skin to be too dry, irritated and develop skin allergies. “It’s a bit drafty, no?”
🧥Wrap Them in Clothing-It’s pretty funny seeing a big dog wearing kid clothes😅 but if it keeps them warm in this weather, why not?? Make sure to layer up your fur babies if they’re going outside or simply just staying inside. Bonus: they become your personal heater!!
