𝔻𝕚𝕕 𝕪𝕠𝕦 𝕜𝕟𝕠𝕨? Sometimes adding an adult dog to your family is a better option than getting a puppy. Puppies are a LOT of work! Any dog is a huge responsibility, but puppies are a financial, physical, and emotional responsibility. You have the financial aspect: Buying the pup/Adoption fees, all the puppy vaccines and boosters, puppy food, crates, baby gates, toys, training, grooming/nail trimming (puppy nails grow SO fast!), age-appropriate spay/neuter, teething & destructive behaviors, plus puppies are prone to getting into stuff they shouldn’t, so having an emergency fee in case of incident is important! After the financial responsibility, you have to teach them everything - whether you hire a professional trainer or not. Crate training, potty training, basic obedience training, thresholds, leash walking, recall, socialization, etc - it’s all very time consuming and a lot of work! Sometimes puppies get bigger than anticipated (an issue if your living situation has weight restrictions), or their temperament or sociability changes when they hit maturity (AKA they are Dog Selective, Same-Sex Aggressive, or Dog Aggressive). A few of the perks of adding an adult dog are: since they’re fully grown, you don’t have to worry about they outgrowing the size restrictions, they are typically already spayed/neutered, up-to-date on yearly vaccines, solidified temperament and sociability, usually have some training, potty trained, not dealing with teething, and the list goes on and on. 𝔻𝕚𝕕 𝕪𝕠𝕦 𝕜𝕟𝕠𝕨? Sometimes reputable breeders have adult dogs that they held back for their programs that didn’t grow structurally or temperamentally to standard, or they have a breeding candidate that wont be used or won’t be used again, or a working/sport dog that washes out, and therefore get rehomed? Taking a dog to their absolute favorite place, a place that never had any rules or expectations, a place that has tons of fun and exciting distractions, and showing them that their training applies >everywhere< will really solidify their newly learned behaviors and their understanding of what is expected of them. For Mac, that favorite place is the beach - there’s water (a retriever’s dream come true), birds to chase, sometimes other dogs to play with, and lots of room to run around. But he needed to be able to recall, walk nicely in a heel, and just generally calm down a bit in order to safely enjoy it. 𝔻𝕖𝕔𝕖𝕞𝕓𝕖𝕣 𝟙: Met Finley’s owners alone in a Parking Lot. She was Barking, Growling, Hackles Raised, Lunging. Prominent Fear Aggression. 𝔻𝕖𝕔𝕖𝕞𝕓𝕖𝕣 𝟟: Finley was Fearful of her environment. We took her on lots of field trips for positive exposure and positive associations. Here she is interacting typically around the Fish Tank in Cabelas. 𝔻𝕖𝕔𝕖𝕞𝕓𝕖𝕣 𝟠: Finley walking in proximity to an unknown (to her) but neutral dog for the first time and learning auto-sits outside a shopping center. 𝔻𝕖𝕔𝕖𝕞𝕓𝕖𝕣 𝟛𝟙: We took Finley to a super busy place: Downtown Traverse City for the NYE Cherry Drop with hundreds of people and other dogs all around, here she is heeling directly next to another dog.
