Holiday Pet Safety Plan
Christmas & New Year’s Eve Fireworks
Fireworks, gunfire, loud music, and parties can be overwhelming and frightening for pets especially dogs. Planning ahead can prevent panic, escapes, and injuries.
🐾 BEFORE THE CELEBRATIONS
✔️ Update Identification
• Ensure microchip info is current
• Dogs without microchips should wear a collar with ID
• Add a temporary tag or tape with a phone number if needed
✔️ Check Home & Yard Security
• Inspect fencing, gates, doors, and latches
• Repair loose boards or gaps where a frightened dog could escape
✔️ Talk to Your Veterinarian
• Ask about anxiety medications, calming supplements, or pheromone products
• Do this in advance—don’t wait until the night of fireworks
✔️ Prepare a Safe Space
• Choose a quiet, interior room
• Add familiar bedding, toys, and treats
• Use white noise, TV, or music to mask loud sounds
🐕 DURING FIREWORKS & PARTIES
✔️ Keep Pets Indoors
• Even dogs who “never run” may bolt when scared
• Leash dogs for bathroom breaks
✔️ Limit Exposure
• Close windows and curtains
• Avoid taking dogs outside during fireworks
✔️ Stay Calm & Reassuring
• Speak softly and maintain normal routines
• Do not punish fearful behavior
✔️ Supervise Closely
• Watch for signs of panic: pacing, shaking, hiding, vocalizing
🚨 IF YOUR DOG ESCAPES
• Check nearby areas immediately
• Contact local shelters and animal control
• Post on neighborhood and lost-pet groups
• Microchips dramatically increase reunion chances
❤️ REMEMBER
The holidays are short—but fear can be intense. A little preparation can mean the difference between a joyful New Year and a lost or injured pet.
Celebrate safely. Keep pets protected.
