When people move out and leave their animals behind.
When people give up on their animals.
Guys, it is currently an epidemic. Especially with dogs. We have run out of room and are putting dogs in every room. Even the furnace room. Every single day, we are getting calls from people trying to rehome their dogs. It was a gift or an impulsive decision, or they're moving or they have children or their landlord says no, or they are allergic. Every day. Multiple calls.
A bigger shelter is not the answer.
A person who actually honors their commitment they made to an animal is the answer.
I know I'm preaching to the choir, but it's sobering to see that some shelters have to go back to euthanasia...killing away a problem they didn't create.
We are no kill and we will remain no kill, but that means if you come to us with a dog in your arms and start to say, "I need to rehome my dog because (insert reason)," we simply can't help you. We are full full FULL with dogs who come to us from abandonment, abuse, and neglect situations.
We made a commitment to those animals to find them a better life, and that's what we will do.
This is Hobbes, a very old and very sweet and very scared and trembling dog who was left behind by his owner. This is the sad and sobering reality we have to deal with every day. π
We, as human beings, MUST do better. π
